A court in Indore today acquitted a man accused of killing a 30-year-old married in 2015, giving him the benefit of doubt. Special judge B K Dwivedi observed that there was no eyewitness and the entire case rested on circumstantial evidence. According to the police, Mahesh Bairagi, a boutique owner, murdered Kavita Raina by hitting her head with an iron pipe on August 24, 2015 after she rejected his advances. The prosecution had said that he cut the body into six pieces with a knife, stuffed the parts in polythene bags and threw them under the bridge near Teen Imli Crossing. The body was found two days later. In a 75-page order, the court said the prosecution failed to prove that Bairagi murdered Raina and subsequently eliminated evidence. The judge acquitted him giving the benefit of doubt.

A 22-year-old man who had escaped from police lock-up after his arrest for the murder of two persons in Uttar Pradesh has been rearrested in southwest Delhi, police said on Friday.
A 12-year-old girl was killed and her brother injured after a dumper hit them this morning while they were going to school in southeast Delhi's Jamia Nagar, the police said. Around 6:45 AM , a dumper bearing a Haryana registration number hit two school children,a girl and her 14-year-old brother. The girl was dragged for a few metres beneath the truck and was severely injured. The girl succumbed to her injuries and her body was kept at AIIMS for post-mortem. Her brother sustained leg injury and bruises on the forehead and is admitted to Apollo Hospital, the police said. The victims were students of Class 6 at a government school. The accused, Pushpender, 28, was arrested. He was carrying building material in the truck and was going towards Noida.
At least eight people were shot dead in Santa Fe High School in an early morning shootout in the southeastern Texas city of Santa Fe on Friday.Assistant principal Cris Richardson told CNN that the gunman has been arrested.A second person has been detained as well. A 60-year-old woman riding pillion on a motorcycle was killed after the two-wheeler was hit by a truck in southeast Delhi's Lajpat Nagar today morning, the police said. The deceased, Noor Jahan , was returning home after a check-up at Safdarjung Hospital when an Indian Oil truck, bearing a Delhi registration number, hit the Splendor motorcycle on the Ring Road around 9.50am, a police official said. She was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead. Her post-mortem examination was conducted at AIIMS. Her son, who was riding the motorcycle, escaped with minor injuries, the official said. The truck driver, Kamlesh, 40, was arrested, he added.
A civil construction contractor and a villager were killed in separate incidents by Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district, police said today. While the contractor, identified as Jaidev, was killed in Bhansi area, the 60-year-old villager, Linga Kunjum, was killed in Kuakonda police station area, Dantewada Additional Superintendent of Police Gorakhnath Baghel told PTI. "Contractor Jaidev was hacked to death today with sharp weapons after a group of Naxals stormed a site in Masapara in Bhansi where labourers were constructing a culvert. They also torched a tipper truck, a tractor and a concrete mixer," he said. Jaidev was a member of the local panchayat apart from being a construction contractor, he said. Kunjam, the official said, was killed at his home yesterday night in Phulpad village after Naxals accused him of being a police informer. Baghel informed that security forces were combing the area to track down the Naxals involved in these two incidents.

Senior lawyer and noted jurist Ram Jethmalani today told the Supreme Court that Karanataka governor's Vajubhai Vala decision to call BJP for formation of government was "shameful" and "gross abuse of the constitutional power". A minor girl, who had been struggling for her life for the past two weeks after a neighbour allegedly raped her and made an attempt to burn her alive, succumbed to injuries at Bokaro General Hospital early today, police said. The teenage girl, who lived with her maternal uncle here, was alone at home when her neighbour attacked her on May 4, a senior police officer said. "The girl's neighbour, a man in his early 20s, raped her, dragged her to the bathroom in the house, and set her on fire. She sustained 70 per cent burn injuries," Superintendent of Police Shailendra Prasad Burnwal said. The accused, who was arrested a day after the incident, was produced before court and remanded in judicial custody. "The evidences gathered in the case will be produced in the court to ensure stringent punishment for the accused," the officer said. A fresh plea was today moved in the Delhi High Court raising concerns about Aadhaar data security and privacy of individuals, in the wake of several reported leaks of personal information of people from the Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI) database. The matter, seeking directions to the Centre to either allow people to opt out of the system or deletion of the entire existing UIDAI data in view of the security breaches, came up before a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Chander Shekhar which declined to hear it now as the Supreme Court was dealing with the Aadhaar issue. The high court listed it for hearing in August. The petitioner, Kerala-based lawyer Shamnad Basheer, has alleged in his plea that there were several breaches of the Aadhaar system leading to leakage of personal information of individuals since January this year and contended that UIDAI and the Centre were liable to compensate people whose data was compromised. Police here today claimed to have seized a truckload of liquor, being brought from Haryana, and arrested six persons in this connection. According to Raman Kumar, the SHO of Sarai police station in Vaishali district, the truck laden with 425 cartons of Indian Made Foreign Liquor - worth about Rs 50 lakh - was seized during checking of vehicles in the area. The truck's driver Mujid Khan and helper Mohd Saleem, both from Haryana, were arrested along with two of their local associates Mukesh Kumar and Rajesh Kumar were also arrested, the SHO said. They revealed during investigation that the consignment had been brought from Gurugram and was meant for supply in the district's Mahua block, he added. Based on their tip-off, two more of their associates Manish Kumar and Vinay Kumar were also arrested, the SHO said adding that the liquor was kept hidden in an enclosure built inside the truck which was laden with glass items. A 25-year-old man was today arrested for trying to extort money from former Gujarat minister Jayanti Kavadia by posing as an associate of gangster Ravi Pujari, police said. Ashishkumar Sharma, who told police that he was an assistant director in the film industry, was arrested from Mumbai in a joint effort by the Morbi police, the Ahmedabad police's Crime Branch and Mumbai police's Anti-Extortion Cell, said a senior official. "On May 16, former minister Kavadia got a call from Sharma, who after identifying himself as gangster Ravi Pujari's henchman, demanded Rs 5 lakh from him," said Akshayraj Makwana, Superintendent of Police, Morbi. The Delhi High Court today dismissed the plea of Hyatt Regency Hotel's managing director and two others seeking quashing of summons issued to them by a trial court in a criminal negligence case in which a man had fallen from the sixth floor of the hotel and suffered serious injuries that had put him in a vegetative state. Justice Anu Malhotra dismissed the petitions of Hyatt Hotel's MD Shiv Kumar Jatia, its senior managers Aseem Kapoor and Karan Lal, who had claimed that there was no negligence in their part. Jatia, Kapoor and Lal had moved the high court in 2015 challenging the summoning order of the trial court on the grounds that there was no involvement and negligence on their part. They had claimed that they provided timely medical help to the injured and there was no delay on their part. The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the authorities to recover the compensation paid, if any, to a minor girl who didn't stand by her complaint of rape during the trial. The high court passed the order while granting bail to the accused, himself a minor. Though a minor, he is being tried as an adult person in view of the serious nature of the crime. The youth is in a jail since July last year. The trial court had rejected his bail plea twice. Justice S K Palo granted him bail last week. "If any compensation has been given to the prosecutrix (complainant) under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act by the state government, the same may be recovered from her," the high court said.
