Pak-Italian woman strangled to death, confirms autopsy report

A 26-year-old Pakistani-Italian woman was strangled to death and did not die of natural causes in Punjab province of Pakistan, the autopsy report has confirmed. Police claim to have arrested Sana Cheema's father, a brother and an uncle in the light of the autopsy report and charged them for her murder. The report issued by the Punjab Forensics and Science Laboratory reveals that Cheema's cervical bone was fractured on April 18. "Cheema's death was not accidental as she was strangled," the report says. The incident took place in Kunja, Gujrat, some 150-km from Lahore. The body of Cheema was exhumed on April 24 on the court's order as police suspected that she might have been killed in the name of "family honour". Police high-ups initiated the probe after reports published in Italian media that Cheema was killed by her family members over marriage issue. Woman says BJP MLA's son raped her; lawmaker dismisses charge

After a woman alleged rape by the son of a BJP MLA and demanded justice, the UP lawmaker today clarified that it was an "old matter" that was probed and found to be fake by the police even as he accused the opposition Samajwadi Party of playing politics to malign his image. "It's an attempt by the Samajwadi Party to malign my image. On November 23, 2016, the CB-CID had filed the final report in the matter and termed the matter as fake. The woman had herself given a statement before a magistrate that neither was she abducted nor was she raped and my son's name was included under pressure from SP leaders," BJP MLA Roshanlal Verma told reporters here. The woman had also given an affidavit to the police in the matter, disclosing names of the SP leaders who were behind the conspiracy, claimed Verma. SC asks ASI to improve upkeep of Taj

A displeased Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) up for not taking care of the Taj Mahal.In February and March this year, the apex court has also issued notices to the Uttar Pradesh government and the Centre to submit a draft vision document on how they wish to protect the Taj Mahal.The apex court was hearing a plea filed by environmentalist M.C.Mehta, seeking protection of the historical monument. The court has also ordered demolition of a multi-level car parking facility near the Taj.The court has already asked Taj Trapezium Zone (TTZ) authority to come up with a comprehensive action plan to protect the 17th century-built Mughal mausoleum.

2 minor girls gangraped for 2 months in Kolkata

Two minor girls were allegedly gangraped repeatedly for two months in Kolkata's Gobindapur area.The victims said that they had repeatedly been raped by a security guard and his friend.Both the accused have been arrested, and a case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.In the recent past, there has been a surge in sexual crimes against minors.In January, an eight-year-old girl, who belonged to a nomadic Muslim tribe in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua, was allegedly abducted, drugged, gang-raped, tortured and killed.In Indore, an infant below the age of one was allegedly raped and killed.Taking cognizance of such crimes, President Ram Nath Kovind, on April 22, promulgated the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018, for effective deterrence against the commission of rape.The ordinance seeks the death penalty for the rapists of girls below 12 years of age and stringent punishment for perpetrators of rape particularly of girls below 16 years, ..

Jharkhand: Eight road construction vehicles set ablaze

Eight vehicles engaged in road construction were set ablaze in Jharkhand's Giridih district's Chirki village on Wednesday.Security personnel had found out that the construction company never actually received a threat from Naxals."Right now, we are not sure if it is a Naxal attack. Naxals kill two suspected police informants in Chhattisgarh

On Tuesday two villagers inChhattisgarh's Rajnandgaon district were shot dead by Naxals on suspicion of them being police informants.The incident took place in Gandai town at around 7:30 p.m. last evening.The Naxalites also left a letter written in red ink claiming responsibility for the murders.Both men were in their late 30s.

Impediment in self defence in penal proceedings violation of human rights: CIC

The Central Information Commission has directed the Bureau of Immigration, an agency exempted from RTI Act disclosures, to give a person details of his travel as he needed it for defence in penal proceedings. The CIC underlined that any impediment in a person's self defence would be a breach of human rights. The case pertains to RTI applicant M Dinesh, who had sought information related to his arrival-departure details in his passport, through his application in 2016. Dinesh said he was falsely implicated by a person who alleged that he had threatened him. Dinesh claimed that he was in Dubai when the purported incident allegedly took place, but the police did not hear his plea and sent him to jail. He applied for details of his arrival and departure from Bureau of Immigration, a unit of the Intelligence Bureau, which is exempted from making any disclosures under the transparency law barring allegations pertaining to corruption and human rights violations. Bangladesh SC to pronounce its verdict on Zia's bail on May 15

Bangladesh's Supreme Court today set May 15 as the date to pronounce its verdict on a plea by the country's anti-graft body challenging the bail granted to former prime minister and opposition BNP chief Khaleda Zia, serving the five years jail term in a corruption case. After hearing the arguments of both sides for two consecutive days, the four-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, concluded the hearing and reserved its order. "The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court concluded the hearing and will pronounce its verdict on Tuesday (May 15)," a spokesman of the Attorney General's office said. UP: Minor Dalit girl set on fire after she refused to share her mobile number

Enraged over a girl's refusal to share her mobile despite his repeated requests, a man allegedly set his minor Dalit neighbour on fire at her house in Fariha village in Azamgarh district, police said today. The incident took place yesterday when Mohammad Shai, also resident of the same village, went to the victim's house and allegedly pressurised her to give her mobile number to him. According to the police, when the girl refused to disclose her number, Shai first allegedly thrashed her, and then sprinkled kerosene over her body to set her on fire. The neighbours, who gathered after hearing the girl's cry, extinguished the fire, and nabbed the accused while he was trying to flee from the spot, they said. Rushed to a nearby Sadar hospital, the girl, after getting preliminary treatment, was referred to a government hospital in Varanasi where her condition is stated to be critical, a police official said. Son of police inspector found dead in Aarey Colony

A 20-year-old son of a police officer was found dead in suburban Goregaon this morning, police said. The deceased, Atharva Shinde, was son of inspector Narendra Shinde of the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai police, an official said. The Shinde family resides in Thakur Complex in Kandivali, but Atharva's body was found lying in bushes near the film city in Aarey Colony area around 10.30 am, the official added. Some injury marks were found on his neck and eyes, he said. DCP (Zone XII), Vinay Kumar Rathod, said, "The body has been sent for post-mortem and the cause of the death will be known only after the autopsy report." Further investigation is on.

Rape victim attempts suicide after heated row with husband

A woman raped by former BSP MLA Purshottam Naresh Dwivedi in 2010 tried to commit suicide after having a heated debate with her husband, the police said today. A special CBI court had in 2015 sentenced Dwivedi to ten years imprisonment in the case. "The woman, who was raped by former BSP MLA Purshottam Naresh Dwivedi, consumed dye and tried to end her life in Nareni area here yesterday," Bharat Kumar Lal, Additional Superitendent of Police, said. She had married Rahul Nishad in January this year. She had some arguments with her husband over phone after which she tried to commit suicide, the officer said. The woman was rushed to a hospital where her condition was stated to be stable, the police said. The woman, a minor during the time of the incident, was working as the politician's domestic help. 6 held for beating up youth, posting video on social media

Six people were arrested for allegedly beating up a youth and posting a video of the incident on social media, police said today. Vimal, one of the accused, had some altercation with Ravi Gupta at a wedding function yesterday in Binawar area after which Vimal along with his accomplice beat up Ravi today, SSP Ashok Yadav said. The accused filmed it and posted on social media, Yadav said, adding the incident came to light when the video went viral. The police, however, did not confirm that the victim was forced to drink urine as he had alleged. Ravi alleged that he was abducted from Bhamora by Vimal and was taken to Binawar, where he was forced to touch the feet of people and was taken to a village panchyat, where he was forced to drink urine. Police nabs woman and her 3 friends for killing husband, chopping body into pieces

Four people, including a woman, were arrested by the Goa police for allegedly killing her husband and then disposing of the body in a forest area after cutting it into pieces, an official said today. The woman, identified as Kalpana Bassu (31), killed her husband Basauraj Bassu (38), a casual labourer, about a month back and then disposed of the body after cutting it into three pieces with the help of three of his friends, police inspector Ravindra Desai said. The incident came to light after the wife of one of the accused men (name not specified by the police) suspected something amiss in her husband's behaviour and informed the police about it. Based on suspicion, the police questioned the man who then spilled the beans about the crime. The Supreme Court today sought to know from the Himachal Pradesh government the names and designations of officials who were posted at Kasauli when the unauthorised constructions came up there. The apex court also asked the state to apprise it about the specific steps taken to ensure that no uauthorised construction was being carried out in the entire state and how it proposed to tackle the issue. A bench of Justices M B Lokur and Deepak Gupta also asked the state about the steps it proposes to take to remove the debris of unauthorised constructions which were demolished in several hotels at Kasauli. 18000 bottles of intoxicant seized in Jammu

A truck allegedly carrying intoxicant substances was seized today in the outskirts of Jammu district, police said. A special drive against drugs was launched by police where a Srinagar-bound truck was intercepted for police checking at the Manwal area of the city, a police official said. According to the official, on seeing the police the driver left the vehicle and fled away from the spot. During search of the vehicle, the police party recovered 18000 bottles of Maxsoft and Corex, which he was carrying without any permission, he said. Validity of parliamentary committee reports can't be challenged: SC

The Supreme Court today ruled that the validity of parliamentary committee reports cannot be challenged or questioned in courts. A five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also said that courts can refer to parliamentary reports for statutory interpretation in accordance with law. The bench, also comprising Justices A K Sikri, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan, said the court can take judicial notice of parliamentary committee reports but their validity cannot be challenged. The bench said the Constitution envisages separation of power among the three organs of democracy and the court has to "strike a balance between legislature and judiciary". Relying on parliamentary committee reports in judicial proceedings does not impinge on parliamentary privileges, the apex court said. The court was hearing two PILs filed by activist Kalpna Mehta and the Sama-Resource Group for Women and Health.
