Woman gang-raped and killed in tea garden in Assam

A 20-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped and killed in a tea garden, and four persons were arrested in this connection in Assam's Cachar district, police said today. The woman was missing since May 1 from Chappanhal Tea Estate in Udharbond town and her body was recovered by the police yesterday night, the police said. The woman's father had filed a missing diary with the police along with a complaint against four persons who were subsequently arrested. The body was sent for post-mortem examination, a police officer said.

Man held for ramming car into Minister's pilot vehicle

A 24-year old man was today taken into custody after the car he was driving hit the rear of a pilot vehicle of Union Minister Prakash Javadekar in Pathanamthitta district with BJP alleging it was a security lapse. The vehicle hit the pilot car of the minister, police said. A case was registered against the man for rash driving, police said, adding "he was in an inebriated condition." Meanwhile, a BJP press release here said the private vehicle hitthe pilot car after overtaking it. The party alleged that it was a security lapse and called for a probe into the incident. Javadekar was on his way to attend the NDA election convention held as part of the Chengannur Assembly by-poll when the incident occurred. Former BJP State President P S Sreedharan Pillai is the party candidate for the by-poll slated for May 28.

'Uzbek woman held with bullet round at IGI airport'

A 19-year-old Uzbek woman was apprehended at the Delhi airport today for allegedly carrying a live bullet round in her baggage, an official said. A CISF officer detected the bullet on the x-ray monitor when he was scanning the baggage of the woman at about 5 am at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), he said. A bullet of 7.65-mm calibre was recovered from the passenger who had a Uzbekistan passport and was travelling to Nagpur from here, he said. "The woman was not allowed to take the flight and was handed over to the police as she could not produce any documents for carrying the ammunition," the official said.

CM orders probe after Pak girl drawing her national flag features in Bihar notebooks

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered a probe after a picture of a Pakistani girl drawing her country's national flag was printed in school notebooks published by Jamui district administration. The District Water and Sanitation Committee (DWSC) had published 5,000 notebooks intended to promote 'Swachh Jamui, Swasthya Jamui' campaign in December last year, district administration sources said, adding they were printed by a Patna-based firm. Some notebooks were distributed among students of government schools but the undistributed copies were recalled after the matter came to light, the sources said. An official release said the chief minister ordered a probe into how the girl's picture was printed in the school notebooks. He yesterday directed Jamui District Magistrate Dharmendra Kumar to investigate the matter. NGT orders inspection of Sonipat mining sites, calls for strict action

Taking strong note of rampant illegal mining in Haryana's Sonipat district, the National Green Tribunal has directed authorities to inspect the sites, seize machines such as JCBs and take strict action against violators. A bench of Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore directed the district magistrate of Sonipat to personally look into the matter and inspect the mining sites on the Yamuna river bed. The green panel said it was "shocked" to see the state of affairs and the manner in which mines were being operated. "We direct the Collector, Sonipat, to personally look into the matter and visit the mining sites on the river bed so as to have first hand information and thereafter pass necessary instructions to the concerning officers, including those of the Mining Department and Police Department," the bench said. KVIC official files FIR against ex-MP

The Delhi Police has registered a case against a former Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament for filing "frivolous" complaints and RTI applications to allegedly "malign and harass" officials of Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). An FIR has been filed under relevant provisions for extortion, defamation at the Connaught Place police station by a KVIC official, police said. The complaint alleged that former MP Yashvir Singh has filed around 30 complaints with the Prime Minister's Office and 15 RTI applications against KVIC and its officials seeking "baseless" information like the cost of construction of Khadi Plazas at New Delhi and Mumbai. "The rampant complaints started giving mental trauma to the KVIC authorities, who are always overworked. Kathua case transfer to CBI: SC likely to decide tomorrow

The Supreme Court is likely to hear tomorrow the Kathua gangrape-and-murder case along with the petitions seeking shifting of the trial to Chandigarh and handing over the investigation to the CBI. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, which had stayed the trial in the case till tomorrow, would deal with the prayer of the victim's father for shifting the trial to Chandigarh and the plea of the accused seeking handing over the probe to CBI. The victim, an eight-year-old girl from a minority nomadic community, had disappeared from near her home in a village near Kathua in the Jammu region on January 10. Shami's wife visits his native village in UP

Indian cricketer Mohd Shami's wife Hasin Jahan today visited the pacer's native village in Uttar Pradesh's Amroha district, police said. Didauli police station Inspector Ram Singh Katheria said Jahan approached the police and asked for protection to visit Sahas village. She then visited the village where she demanded that lock of Shami's house be broken so that she can enter it. But the demand was turned down by police personnel, he said, adding, "We denied to break the lock as Shami's family members were not there." London police seek info after teen is shot dead on a street

British police are urgently seeking information about the shooting death of a teenage boy. Scotland Yard said today the homicide and major crime units are handling the case of a 17-year-old boy shot dead in south London yesterday. The shooting happened while it was still light outside. Police were called at 6:05 p.m. and found a gravely injured teenager lying on the street. He was pronounced dead on the scene after receiving first aid. London has experienced an increase in violent crime this year but it has mostly been knife crimes. Britain has strict gun laws and shooting deaths are not common.

Man shot dead in Ambala

A man was shot dead in Topkhana Bazaar in Ambala district of Haryana today, police said. The deceased was identified as Sandeep Goel. Gun shots were heard soon after Goel left his house in the morning, a relative of the deceased said in the police complaint. When the relative rushed out, he found Goel lying on the road in a pool of blood, the complaint said. It added that Goel had been receiving threats from a resident of his locality for the past few months. Goel was rushed to the local civil hospital where he was declared dead on arrival. Police is examining the footage of a CCTV camera which recorded the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Suresh Kaushik said. Police suspect an old rivalry to be the reason behind the murder and said the culprit would be nabbed soon.

Two BJP workers accused of rape in Sehore district, one held

Ashta police in Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh have registered a case of rape against two local BJP workers and arrested one of them. Raja Ram (35) was today arrested for allegedly raping a 28-year-old woman repeatedly for the last two years, Ashta Sub Divisional Officer of Police G P Agrawal said. Ram's friend Mukesh Thakur (32), also accused of raping the woman, was absconding, he said. Thakur is a local representative of BJP MP Manohar Untwal. Agrawal said that Ram, who a working committee member of the state BJP's Scheduled Caste Cell, ran a centre under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas (Skill Development) Yojana. He gave a job to the woman in April 2016. As per the woman's complaint, he 'raped' her many times by "cheating" and "offering allurements" to her. Revenue officer held for accepting bribe in Kota

A revenue officer has been arrested by Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials here for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 7,000 from a man for measuring his agricultural land, officials said. Anjali Sharma (38) was arrested from her residence in Borekheda area of the city and would be produced before an ACB court tomorrow, they said. On April 23, the complainant approached the ACB alleging that the revenue officer has demanded a bribe of Rs 10,000 for measuring his agriculture land in Deoli Machiya village, an ACB inspector said, adding the bribe amount was brought down to Rs 7,000 following negotiations. Sharma was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe, the officer said.

No precedent of govt returning collegium's recommendation: SC judge

The government's decision to send back the Supreme Court collegium's recommendation for elevation of Uttarakhand Chief Justice K M Joseph as a judge of the top court was unprecedented and needed more detailed discussions, Justice Kurian Joseph, a member of the collegium, said today. "Things that should not have happened had happened -- that is the general feeling," the apex court judge told reporters on the sidelines of a function here. He was replying to a question on the Centre returning the recommendation of the collegium and asking it to reconsider Justice K M Joseph's elevation to the apex court. "There is no precedent of the names recommended by the collegium being returned (by the Centre). So, more detailed discussions should take place (on the matter)," the Supreme Court judge said, without elaborating further. Village Sarpanch shot dead in Datia district

Sarpanch of a village in Datia district of Madhya Pradesh was allegedly killed by three persons over old enmity, police said today. Rajora Sarpanch Raghuram Kamriya (35) was allegedly shot by Mayank Yadav, Anand Yadav and Anil Yadav last midnight, district superintendent of police Mayank Awasthi said. Kamriya was rushed to a hospital where he died, the SP said. CAT seeks response of Bihar govt on IAS officer's transfer plea

The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has sought the response of the Bihar government on a contempt petition filed by an IAS officer for not complying with its order asking the state to consider his name for inter-state transfer after he apprehended threat to his life. The Principal Bench of the CAT, comprising members Nita Chowdhury and V Ajay Kumar, issued notice to the chief secretary of Bihar and asked for a reply before May 30, the next date for hearing. Delhi transport dept's app to go on trial from next week

The Delhi Transport Department's mobile application to help people register complaints against errant taxi and autorickshaw drivers for prompt action in case they are found guilty, will go on a 15-day trial from next week. Till now, complaints are lodged through a transport department helpline and it is often alleged that such complaints go unattended. The app named 'Delhi Transport' will go on a 15-day trial from next week. Afterwards, it will be launched for public use, Special Commissioner (Transport) K K Dahiya said. During the trial, a beta version of the app will be launched to receive suggestions from the stakeholders to firm up the application before its formal launch. The app will help in bringing all services of the transport department, including complaints against auto, taxi drivers, getting driving licenses, reporting junk vehicles parked permanently in public places, getting timings of the inter-state buses, the official said.
