WASHINGTON/FRANKFURT (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department has filed criminal charges against former Volkswagen AG Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn, accusing him of conspiring to cover up the German automaker's diesel emissions cheating.
Two RSS workers arrested for attack on photojournalist
Two RSS activists were arrested in connection with the alleged attack on a photojournalist of a Malayalam daily at the Malappuram Press Club here, police said today. The two-Dilip Kumar (31) and Shibu (30) are RSS workers and were arrested last night, police said. The incident occurred when some RSS workers barged into the club and allegedly attacked the photographer, Faud Sanea, for having taken a video of their alleged manhandling of a two-wheeler rider during a protest march near here. A case had been registered against 10 RSS activists under various sections of the IPC including those related to unlawful assembly and rioting besides the Kerala Public Way Restriction of Assemblies and Procession Act. The case was registered on a complaint by the photojournalist, who suffered injuries on his legs and had been hospitalised. S Lankan President orders suspension of officials arrested for bribery
President Maithripala Sirisena has ordered suspension of a senior official of the Presidential Secretariat and a Chairman of a State corporation on the charges of alleged bribery.The Bribery Commission arrested the President's Chief of Staff Dr I.H.K. Mahanama and the Chairman of the Timber Corporation P. Dissanayake after they were caught accepting a bribe of Rs 20 million, Colombo Page reported.They had allegedly asked for a bribe of Rs 100 million from an individual regarding a deal on the shares of a company. BJP alleges Sadhvi Jyoti harassed in Hubli, files complain with EC

IAS officer's family attacked in Dhanbad
Three brothers of an IAS officer were attacked by miscreants allegedly for extortion in Wasseypur locality of Dhanbad, a police official said today. The IAS officer, Abu Imran, is the Director, Higher Education Department, of Jharkhand government. The police official said Abu Tarikh and Anasur Rehman received head injury while Md Babars leg was fractured in the incident that took place yesterday. Accused in lady officer's murder remanded in custody
A Kasauli court today remanded in five-day police custody the main accused in the killing of an assistant town planner while leading a demolition drive here. Vijay Singh, who was arrested from the Mathura- Vrindavan area yesterday, was produced before the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Yuzvindra Singh under tight security. The prosecution sought five day police remand of Singh to recover the weapon used by him for committing the crime.The court allowed the plea. A team comprising Himachal Pradesh and Delhi Police personnel had arrested Singh for the murder of Assistant Town Planner Shail Bala Sharma on Tuesday. The Maharashtra government told the Bombay High Court today that it was considering a policy under which one person, including bureaucrats and judges, will be allotted only one flat in the state under any state-sponsored scheme. "The government is open to consider a policy by which one person would be allotted only one flat in the entire state at the same time under any government scheme," advocate general Ashutosh Kumbhkoni told the court. Kumbhkoni was responding to a suggestion made by a division bench of Justices B R Gavai and Bharati Dangre yesterday that bureaucrats and judicial officers should be allotted only one flat in the state. Appreciating the government's statement, Justice Gavai said, "No government office, including high court office, should be used for personal profiteering. There should not be any misuse." SC refuses to interfere with arrest of journalist Upendra Rai
The Supreme Court today refused to interfere with the arrest of journalist Upendra Rai by the CBI for his alleged involvement in dubious financial transactions. A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan said it would not like to interfere in the arrest, saying it has not gone through the application filed by Rai seeking protection. The CBI had yesterday arrested Delhi-based journalist Upendra Rai for allegedly indulging in dubious financial transactions and getting an airport access pass made by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) by furnishing false information. Rai claimed he has been framed in the case as he has been writing against an ED official who was part of the team probing the 2G spectrum allocation scam case. Man found with wrists slit near HM's residence
A 43-year-old man was found with his wrists slit near union Home Minister Rajnath Singh's residence in central Delhi today, the police said. The man, Raj Kumar, was spotted by a police personnel patrolling the area on his motorcycle. Kumar had allegedly slit his wrists. He was rushed to RML Hospital where he is undergoing treatment and is currently stable, the police said. Police said the man, a resident of Mukherjee Nagar, appeared to be mentally disturbed.
CM announces ex-gratia, construction firm MD arrested
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the labourer who was killed when a portion of an under-construction flyover caved in here yesterday night. The managing director of the firm executing the project has been arrested, the police said. The chief minister also ordered a high-level inquiry into the flyover collapse at Bomikhal area in which another labourer was critically injured, an official at the chief minister's office said. The medical expenses of the injured would be borne entirely by the state government, the official said. The injured is undergoing treatment at a private hospital here. Teenager dies en route cave shrine
A 16-year-old pilgrim from Rajasthan died after apparently suffering a cardiac arrest while on his way to the shrine of Vaishno Devi in Jammu and Kashmir today, police said. Manor Kumar of Dholpur district fell unconscious while on his way to the shrine. He was rushed to a dispensary by his friends where doctors declared him brought dead, they said. As per preliminary reports, he may have died due to a cardiac arrest, but it will be verified only after postmortem.
Exercise sub-inspector killed by miscreants
An Excise sub-inspector was killed by unidentified assailants near Ultapani forest in Kokrajhar district, the police said. Narayan Bhoral was attacked and killed while he was returning home at Saralpara near Kokrajhar town after his official duty in the night of Wednesday.
