Delhi Court defers order in Abu Salem extortion case
The Patiala House Court on Monday deferred order in the 2002 extortion case, due to unavailability of the concern judge.This comes nearly two weeks after the final arguments were presented before a Delhi Court in the aforementioned case against noted gangster Abu Salem.Although Salem had earlier claimed that the prosecution did not have enough evidence against him in the case, a fresh production warrant was issued against him in February.Through his lawyer, the gangster had also claimed that his trial in the case violated an order by which he was extradited to India from Portugal in 2005.On a related noted, Salem is facing trial for allegedly demanding Rs 5 crore as protection money from Delhi businessman Ashok Gupta in 2002.While he has already been granted bail in the case, he continues to be in jail for his involvement in various other cases, including the serial blasts which rocked Mumbai in 1993.

CMB issue: Stalin resumes walk for Cauvery

Constable shot at jail gate in Munger
Two bike borne miscreants shot at a constable deputed at the divisional jail gate in Bihar's Munger district, the police said. Munger Superintendent of Police Ashish Bharti said that the miscreants shot at a constable identified as Ajit Kumar (40) who was on duty at the jail gate last evening. The constable, who received bullet injuries in his stomach, was rushed to sadar hospital from where he was referred to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital, Bhagalpur in a critical condition, the SP said. The police have started its investigation into the incident, he said.
Woman cop's suicide: Suspended ACP arrested in Thane
A suspended senior police officer was arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of a 24-year- old woman constable in the district, the police said today. The accused, assistant commissioner of police Shamkumar Nipunge, surrendered before the Kalwa police last week after the Supreme Court rejected his pre-arrest bail in the case. He was placed under arrest on April 6 and later remanded in police custody, a senior official of the Thane police's Crime Branch said. Subhadra Pawar, a constable attached to the police headquarters in Thane Commissionerate, was allegedly found hanging from a ceiling fan of her flat in the Kalwa township here on September 6 last year, according to the police. No suicide note was recovered from the spot. Complainant turns out to be mastermind behind robbery: Police
A complainant claiming to be the victim a robbery here turned out to be the mastermind of a robbery case, the police said. Complainant Nalinikanta Tripathy and three others were arrested in this connection and Rs 26.48 lakh of the Rs 27 lakh looted money recovered from them, they said yesterday. City DCP Akhileswar Singh told reporters that Tripathy, who works with a construction company, reported to police on March 31 that while returning from a bank located in Jagatpur area, two unknown persons snatching his cash bag that contained Rs 27 lakh after attacking him with a knife. Tripathy said he was carrying his companys cash with him. "But during the course of investigation, the Investigating Officer suspected Tripathy and subsequently his medical reports confirmed that the injuries he had received were self-inflicted," the DCP said. SC to hear plea seeking SIT probe in PNB scam case
Supreme Court on Monday will hear the plea filed by a lawyer seeking SIT probe into the alleged Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam case.Yesterday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) issued Non-Bailable Warrants (NBW) against celebrity jeweller Nirav Modi and his uncle and business partner, Mehul Choksi, in connection with Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam.The warrants were issued after a special CBI court in Mumbai allowed it.The PNB in February detected the multi-crore scam, wherein Modi and Choksi had allegedly cheated the bank to the tune of Rs 114 billion, with the purported involvement of a few employees of the bank.The scam, which reportedly began in 2011, was detected in the third week of January this year, after which the PNB officials reported it to the concerned agencies.The Enforcement Directorate (ED) registered a money laundering case against Modi and others on the basis of a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR.Currently, the probe agencies are investigating the ..
70-year-old man killed by nephew, arrested
A 70-year-old man died and his wife was critically injured after his nephew attacked them with an axe here on Sunday.The incident took place when the accused forcefully entered the house and attacked both with a sharp-edged weapon, said the police.The police have sent the body for postmortem and admitted the injured lady to a nearby hospital for treatment.The accused has been arrested, and an investigation into the matter has been initiated.

A porn actress who says she had an affair with Donald Trump renewed an effort today to get the president to answer her attorney's questions under oath. An attorney for Stormy Daniels filed the motion in federal court in Los Angeles. Michael Avenatti is seeking a jury trial and wants sworn testimony from Trump and his personal lawyer, Michael Cohen about a USD 130,000 payment made to Daniels days before the 2016 presidential election as part of a nondisclosure agreement she is seeking to invalidate. Trump answered questions about Daniels for the first time last week, saying he had no knowledge of the payment made by Cohen and adding that he didn't know where Cohen had gotten the money. Delhi Police to take CBSE paper leak accused to Himachal
The Delhi Police will take the three arrested accused in the CBSE Class 12 Economics paper leak case to Una in Himachal Pradesh to reconstruct the sequence of events and question some more people there, sources said. The special investigation team of Delhi Police's Crime Branch yesterday arrested three staff members of the DAV School in Una in connection with the case. "The trio will be taken to Una, possibly tomorrow, to reconstruct the entire scene. The investigation so far has revealed that the paper was leaked from there, although it went viral through around 40 WhatsApp groups in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and maybe other states," said a senior Delhi Police officer. The Sahibabad police has arrested two men, who had allegedly shot at a medical store employee in the Lajpat Nagar area in south Delhi last month, police said today. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vaibhav Krishna said acting on a tip-off, the police arrested Jalaluddin alias Jalloo and Ankush from Pasonda village at Loni Road last night. Two country-made pistols and eight live cartridges were seized from their possession, he added. The accused were given a contract of Rs 5 lakh to eliminate Hemant Tyagi, the owner of the pharmacy, but by mistake, they had fired upon one of his employees, Babloo Kumar, the SSP said. The accused had told the police that they were given the contract to eliminate Tyagi by his brother-in-law, Rahul, who is imprisoned in the Dasna Jail in his wife's murder case, as the former was helping Rahul's in-laws in the court case, Krishna added. Another accomplice of the accused was still at large, the SSP said.
NCP corporator booked for running sex racket in Pune
An FIR was registered against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) corporator Aniket Wagh on Sunday for allegedly running a sex racket in Pune's Indapur.Acting on a tip-off, Indapur Police sent a person posing as a customer, to Rupali Lodge where the racket was running.The police team that wanted to check the veracity of the inputs, found it to be true and busted the racket.During interrogation, women informed police that they were deputed by NCP corporator Aniket Wagh, who is also owner of the Lodge and its Manager Ajay Shinde.Meanwhile, police has filed a case against Wagh and Shinde and arrested the latter. Wagh is still on the run, the police said.
Police say 6 detained in foiled plot to attack Berlin race
Six people were detained in connection with what police and prosecutors allege was a plan to carry out an extremist attack on Berlin's half-marathon today, German authorities said. "There were isolated indications that those arrested, aged between 18 and 21 years, were participating in the preparation of a crime in connection with this event," prosecutors and police wrote in a joint statement. Convict hangs self in jail 'upset' over kin not visiting him
A murder convict allegedly committed suicide atthe Central prisonhere 'upset' over his wife and family members not visiting him, police said. Pandari Kishan from Maharashtra reportedly hanged himself in a toilet in the prison. He was taken to a hospital where he died, police added. Relatives block road to protest prisoner's death
Relatives of a prisoner today blocked the Katihar-Kodha road for three hours to protest the death of an undertrial in the district jail here, police said. Katihar jail Superintendent Sujit Kumar Jha said Devendra Singh (30) was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly consuming liquor. The condition of Singh, a resident of Champi village, deteriorated this morning following which the jail doctor referred him to Sadar hospital where he died, Jha said. Dr Santosh Prakash, a Sadar hospital doctor, said Devendra Singh was 'brought dead' to the hospital. The deceased prisoner's relatives, alleging that he died because of beating inside the jail, blocked the Katihar-Kodha road. The blockade was lifted following the assurance given by District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police that stern action would be taken against erring persons on the basis of postmortem report.
Complaint against K'taka judge wasn't handled as per SC guidelines: Govt writes to CJI
The government is learnt to have written to Chief Justice Dipak Misra that a complaint of sexual harassment against a district court judge in Karnataka was not handled according to the guidelines laid down by the Supreme Court while considering his case for elevation to the High Court. The letter written by Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad comes days after Justice J Chelameswar, the second senior most judge of the apex court after CJI Dipak Misra, wrote to SC judges alleging the government is stalling the appointment of P K Bhat even after a discreet probe by the Karnataka HC had absolved him. The three-page letter was written last week, sources in the government aware of it said today. Two bike-borne men barged into the residence of a TV journalist here today and shot him in the stomach and right hand following which he was rushed to a hospital, a police officer said. Anuj Chaudhary, who works with a Hindi news channel, is the husband of a BSP councillor and the police are looking at past enmity as being a motive behind the crime, he said.
