NKorea calls imprisoned ex-SKorean president traitor

North Korea today called disgraced former South Korean President Park Geun-hye a "traitor" responsible for "extra-large hideous corruption," in its first reaction to the sentencing of Park to 24 years in prison on corruption charges. The insults carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency came a day after the Seoul Central District Court found Park guilty on a variety of charges, including abusing her power and taking tens and millions of dollars from companies in bribes and through extortion. She had been under arrest since March last year. The relations between the Koreas were terrible while the conservative Park was in office as she took a hard line after the North accelerated its nuclear weapons and missile tests in 2016. For years, North Korea's state media used extremely violent and sexist language to criticize Park, calling her a "prostitute" for the United States and a "murderous demon" destined to meet "a sudden and violent death." Indrani admitted to hospital, undergoes medical tests

Indrani Mukerjea, a former media executive arrested in the murder case of her daughter Sheena Bora, was admitted to J J Hospital, where she was brought in a "semi-conscious" state last night, an official said today. Mukerjea, 46, who was lodged in Byculla jail in South Mumbai under judicial custody, has been admitted in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) of the state-run hospital. "She was brought to the hospital in a semi-conscious state around midnight last night. She is currently undergoing treatment in the CCU. Her condition is relatively better now as compared to the state she was brought to the hospital," S D Nanandkar, dean of J J Hospital, told PTI. The former co-founder of INX Media, arrested in August 2015, is facing trial in the Sheena Bora murder case in which she is the prime accused. 4-yr-old girl bludgeoned to death, family suspect rape, murder

A four-year-old girl was bludgeoned to death with a brick by unidentified assailants in Khatoli here, with family members alleging she was raped before being killed, police said today. The incident took place last evening. The girl's family suspect she was raped and killed. A brick with blood on it was found from the spot, Circle Officer Rajive Kumar Singh said. The body has been sent for post mortem and the matter is being investigated , he said. People also staged a demonstration in the village and demanded that the perpetrators be arrested immediately.

Court to hear on May 11 CBI's plea for further probe in Bofors case

A Delhi court today decided to hear on May 11 the CBI's plea seeking a direction to allow it to go for further probe into the politically sensitive Rs 64-crore Bofors payoff case. The matter came up before Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Anuj Agarwal, who posted it for hearing on May 11 after noting that the original records file pertaining to the case was with the Supreme Court. File has not come yet. Put up for consideration on May 11, the ACMM said. The court had on February 17 deferred the matter for today due to non-availability of documents which have been provided to the apex court as it is seized of an appeal by BJP leader Ajay Agrawal challenging the May 31, 2005 verdict of the Delhi High Court quashing all charges against the accused. Agrawal, who contested the 2014 Lok Sabha election from Rae Bareli against the then Congress president Sonia Gandhi, had filed the appeal in the apex court after the CBI had failed to challenge the high court verdict in the top court .

Niranjan Thomas Alva passes away

Niranjan Thomas Alva, the husband of former Rajasthan governor Margaret Alva, died today at a hospital in Bengaluru, where he was admitted following a chest infection. Alva, 78, died at 10.33 am, his family told PTI. He was admitted to the Ramaiah Hospital following chest congestion and had been in the ICU for 20 days, a family member said. The cremation would be held tomorrow in Bengaluru. Alva, a Supreme Court lawyer, was the son of the first parliamentarian couple, Joachim Alva and Violet Alva.

75-yr-old objects after being given less ration, beaten to death

A 75-year-old woman was beaten to death here allegedly by a fair price shop owner after she objected to being given less ration, police said today. The incident took place last evening at Firazabad village. The police have registered a case against three people, including the shop's owner Naseem, on a complaint by the woman's son, Bhura, Circle Officer (CO) Md Rizwan said. The other accused in the case are Shamim and Janu. No body has been arrested yet, he said. The woman, Aasi, had gone to bring ration from the fair price shop and she objected to being given less ration. The accused confronted her and she was beaten to death by them, according to the FIR. Tension prevailed in the village following the incident and people refused to handover the body to police for several hours. The body was later sent for post mortem, the officer said.

Defamation case against AAP leader adjourned till May 11

The Delhi High Court on Saturday adjourned a case against remaining defendant Kumar Vishwas filed by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley until May 11.The court adjourned the case owing to health conditions of Jaitley, who is currently hospitalised and will undergo a surgery on Sunday.The Patiala House Court here continues to hear the criminal defamation suit against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kumar Vishwas after the Finance Minister withdrew the case against other accused persons -- AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha and Ashutosh -- as they issued an apology in the matter.The Finance Minister had filed two defamation cases of Rs 10 crore against Kejriwal and the other AAP leaders, who had alleged financial irregularities in the Delhi and District Cricket Association when Jaitley was its president.The case against Kejriwal, Sanjay Singh, Raghav Chadha and Ashutosh has already been settled after they tendered the apology to Jaitley.The second civil suit was filed .

Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in Sheena Bora murder case who was admitted to Mumbai's JJ Hospital last night, is stable now and responding to the medications."She is much better than yesterday. Her MRI and Blood investigations are done and the report is still awaited so we can't say much. Meanwhile, we are giving her medications as per her symptoms and she is responding well. Vaishno Devi devotee from Maharashtra dies of cardiac arrest

A 60-year-old pilgrim from Maharashtra died today apparently from cardiac arrest when he was on his way to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Guru Nath fell unconscious near the Bhawan (temple) early today after covering a distance of 13.5 km from the base camp at Katra, a police official said. Nath was immediately taken to a dispensary, he said. He was declared brought dead by doctors and his body would be handed over to his family after completion of legal formalities, the officer said.

3 top Central Railway officers booked for corruption

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked three top officers of the Central Railways' (CR) Pune Division for allegedly rigging the tendering process for a Rs 4 crore repair project in 2016.An official statement read, "Officials of the Pune division of Central Railway, identified as R N Gupta, the then senior divisional engineer (co-ordination), Santosh Parage, senior divisional finance manager, and M S Rajput, the then senior divisional electrical engineer (Traction Distribution) entered into criminal conspiracy with each other and private contractor Rahul Choudhary of Mangalmurty Constructions, Pune.""By abusing their official position, they recommended and awarded the tender to Mangalmurty Constructions at higher rates by way of manipulating the tender proceedings and disqualifying the lower bidder on the basis of fake and forged papers regarding credentials and thereby caused wrongful loss of Rs 49 lakh to Central Railway and corresponding gain to the private contractor .

Haryana girl slaps cop over harassment

A girl in Rohtak district of Haryana on Friday evening repeatedly slapped a traffic police personnel after he asked for friendship and her number during a ride in a shared auto, police said.The national level karate player, who is a gold medalist, was returning from class when the incident took place, a police official said.According to the girl, woman Station house Officer (SHO) said she could only "insult" the traffic police personnel after she reached a women police station along with him to file a complaint.She also said the woman official was being pressurised to not take an action against the traffic policeman.Rohtak Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ravindra said the traffic police official has been suspended and an FIR will be registered after a written complaint against him.A thorough probe has been initiated into the matter, the official said.The girl has participated in many states as well as national level Karate competitions.

CBSE paper leak: 3 staff members of school in Himachal Pradesh held

Three staff members of a school in Himachal Pradesh were arrested today by the Delhi Police in connection with leak of CBSE's Class 12 economics paper, police said. Centre superintendent Rakesh, Clerk Amit and peon Ashok of DAV School in Himachal Pradesh's Una district were arrested by the Crime Branch, a senior Delhi Police officer said. The three accused were brought to the national capital from Una and after questioning they were arrested, the officer said. A hand written copy of the economics paper was leaked through Whatsapp, a day before the examination on March 26. On March 30, the CBSE announced that it would re-conduct the class 12 economics exam throughout the country on April 25.

Life sentence to eight persons in 2013 murder case in Chhattisgarh

A court here has awarded life imprisonment to eight persons, including three members of a family, for the murder of a businessman in 2013. Additional District Judge Geeta Neware yesterday convicted Shrikishan Agrawal (52), his two sons, Rocky Agrawal (31) and Nitish Agrawal (27), Kanhaiya Das (22), Neeraj Kumar (22), Suny Sidar (23), Bhagdan Chauhan (20) and Mahavir Soni for killing Pramod Agrawal and awarded them lifeimprisonment, Additional Government Pleader Anil Shrivasatav said. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 1,500 on each of them. If the fine is not paid, the convicts will have to undergo additional rigorous imprisonment of 13 months. Mukesh Agrawal (36), Sunil Agrawal (35) and Sanjay Agarwal (36) were acquitted by the court citing the lack of evidence, the government pleader said. SC elevates five as J&K High Court judges

The Supreme Court of India on Saturday cleared the names of five people -- four Advocates and one Judicial Officer -- for their appointment as Jammu and Kashmir High Court judges.The names of Wasim Sadiq Nargal, Nazir Ahmed Baig, Sindhu Sharma, Showkat Ahmad Makru and Rashid Ali Dar were recommended for elevation by the apex court.The above recommendations were made by the then Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court on August 24, 2017, in consultation with his two senior-most colleagues.

Plea for FIR against Mani Shankar Aiyar transferred to crime branch: Police to court

The Delhi Police today informed a court here that a BJP leader's plea for lodging sedition case against suspended Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar for allegedly using derogatory remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been transferred to the crime branch. A report was submitted in the court of the Metropolitan Magistrate, Manika, who was on leave today, in pursuance to the court's direction to the police to submit an action taken report in the matter. Due to the the magistrate's absense, the hearing has now been deferred to May 4. Man gets 5 years jail for sexually assaulting minor girl

A special POCSO court here has sentenced a 80-year-old man to five years imprisonment for sexually assaulting a three-year-old girl in 2014. Special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court Judge Girish Kumar Agrawal on Friday also imposed a fine of Rs 35,000 on Mangilal Dhakad. Dhakad, a resident of Chechat, had sexually assaulted the girl on March 5, 2014, Public Prosecutor Kamalkant Sharma told the court. He was found guilty under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and provisions of the POCSO Act, he said. Statements of at least eight witnesses were recorded during the four-year trial, the public prosecutor said.
