Three men, including a father-son duo, have been arrested by the DRI for allegedly diverting gold jewellery worth at least Rs 150 crore meant for foreign markets to use in India, according to an official statement issued today. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) is investigating gold jewellery exporters declaring exports using the personal hand carry export procedure' a government policy that allows exporters to carry gold jewellery in hand baggage instead of cargo to destinations in United Arab Emirates (UAE) but diverting the consignments into the domestic market by manipulating the procedure. The accused were arrested from the international airport here when they were trying to divert Rs 15 crore worth gold jewellery, it said. The body of an auto driver was found inside a water tank in the Neb Saray area of the city, police said today. The deceased, identified as Dipak (21), was missing since Monday from the Sangam Vihar area and a police complaint was lodged in this regard, an official said. "His family members have alleged that he was murdered but the exact cause of death will be known after the autopsy report is received," the officer said. The body was recovered from the tank yesterday and bore no external injury marks, he said. A few suspects were picked up for questioning and investigation was underway, he added.
The Madras High Court has ordered an inquiry into allegations that funds under the job guarantee scheme MGNREGA were misappropriated in the name of dead persons in Tamil Nadu's Perambalur district. A bench of justices T S Sivagnanam and M Seshasayee also issued notices to the central and state governments besides others, including those overseeing the work related to digging of ponds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme(MGNREGA), in the Noothapur village. The directive came on a public interest litigation petition filed by three residents of the village. They alleged that money had been paid in the name of persons of the village who were dead and without carrying out the pond work during 2015-17. Six women vendors were arrested today for hounding a foreign tourist at Calangute beach, police said. The women, in the age group of 27 to 38 years, sell items on the beach unauthorisedly and were arrested for creating nuisance, inspector Jivba Dalvi said. "They have been arrested under section 34 (IV) of the Police Act, pertaining to offences committed on roads, for nuisance and obstructing tourists," Dalvi said.
Six persons were booked for allegedly swindling Rs 8.56 crore from a cooperative credit society in Vasai here over a period of 12 years, police said today. Police said that the six had siphoned off money invested by other credit society members and had also made false entries in the accounts books to hide financial irregularities. "The irregularities came to light during a statutory audit of the society's account books. The six have been sent on forced leave," an official said. An offence has been registered under relevant sections of the IPC, the Maharashtra Protection of Interests of Depositors Act and Maharashtra Cooperative Societies Act, an official said. Two police officers were booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act after three people arrested for carrying narcotics and liquor bottles revealed that the accused officers took bribes from them, officials said today. Anil Kumar, Ajay Kumar and Vishal, all belonging to Una district, were arrested after 21.83 grams of charas, 6.99 grams of heroin and 12 bottles of liquor were found in their car, police said, adding that they were booked under sections 20, 21 and 29 of ND and PC Act and Excise Act today. More than three-and-a-half months after a man went missing from the Gyaspur village of the area, the Newari Police arrested four people for allegedly kidnapping and beheading him, police said today. Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said that an FIR was lodged on March 18 by a person called Ajit Kumar of the Gyaspur village in which he alleged that his brother Bobby had gone missing on December 19. The complainant alleged in the FIR that his brother had gone to Choubli village in the Chapruli town of Baghpat district with another person, Pradeep, of the same village on December 19, the SSP said. Kumar said he filed a police complaint three months after Bobby went out with Pradeep as he lost all hopes of his coming back. After the complaint was filed, the SSP said, the police launched an investigation and nabbed four people -- Pradeep, Shushil, Manoj and Baburam -- yesterday. Unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore was seized from a car of contractor during checks being held in view of coming assembly elections in Karnataka and two persons detained today, police said. The cash was found in the car when the city police searched it at a check-post, Deputy Commissioner of Police Chandragupta said. The car's owner, a contractor,and the driver were detained in this connection, he said. "The cash seized is election related," he said without divulging further details. Karnataka will go to polls on May 12.

He allegedly defaulted on payment of service tax of Rs 3.06 crore and GST of Rs 5.78 crore, CGST release said. A day after an alleged cash-for-job racket was busted in Haryana, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar today said that even he should not be spared if found involved in corruption. "I too should not be spared if I am found involved in corruption," Khattar told reporters in Panchkula when asked to comment on the alleged cash-for-job racket. A 12-year-old girl jumped from the terrace of a four-storeyed building to escape a man she believed was following her in order to molest her, police today said. The incident happened on Tuesday in Nalasopara in neighbouring Palghar district and came to light after a video of it went viral on social media today, police said. "The girl, a resident of Alkapuri locality in Nalasopara, was out for some work when a man, in his thirties, approached her asking about an address. Superintendents of Police of all the districts have been asked to take action wherever panchayat election related violence was reported, a senior official of the West Bengal Police said here today. Police forces were asked to ensure there was no major assembly of people before block offices where candidates file nomination and keep tab in neighbouring lanes, Additional Director General (Law and Order) Anuj Sharma said. "We are intervening actively," Sharma told reporters at the state secretariat.
