Trial in case of British woman killed in Goa to begin tomorrow

The trial in the killing of British national Danielle MacLaughling will commence in South Goa district court tomorrow beginning with the examination of a witness who had first seen the deceased's body. The 28-year-old British woman was found dead on an isolated stretch between Agonda and Canacona beaches in South Goa on March 14, 2017. The British national, of Irish origin, was holidaying in Goa when she was killed. Vikat Bhagat (23), who police claimed had previous cases against him, was arrested for the crime under relevant sections of the IPC relating to murder, rape, theft and destruction of evidence. Bhagat, who was chargesheeted in June, 2017, is currently imprisoned at Colvale Correction Facility in North Goa, police said. "The trial in the case would begin tomorrow before South Goa District Judge Sayonara Telles," said advocate Vikram Varma, who will be assisting the Assistant Public Prosecutor D J Costa in the case. HC refrains from staying Dikshit's ex-aide's defamation complaint against Kejriwal

The Delhi High Court today refrained from ordering an interim stay on trial proceedings in a criminal defamation case filed against Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal by a former aide of Congress leader Sheila Dikshit. Justice A K Pathak refused to pass any interim stay order in view of a Supreme Court direction that such matters needed to be decided within a year. The court, however, issued notices to the state and the complainant Pawan Khera, seeking their stands on Kejriwal's plea that the complaint was not maintainable as the person affected has not approached the trial court. The complainant had filed the defamation case over Kejriwal's alleged remarks against Dikshit during power tariff hike protests in October 2012. Khera had said that the AAP leader had used objectionable language against the erstwhile Chief Minister Dikshit in a television show. Malaysian prosecutors rest case in Kim Jong Nam murder trial

Malaysian prosecutors wrapped up their case Thursday against two Southeast Asian women accused of killing the estranged half brother of North Korea's leader in a brazen attack at an international airport. Prosecutors told the High Court that they were resting their case against Indonesia's Siti Aisyah, 25, and Vietnam's Doan Thi Huong, 29, after questioning 34 witnesses over six months. A Jodhpur court on Thursday convicted Bollywood actor Salman Khan in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case, while others - Tabu, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam - were acquitted.The quantum of sentence would be announced shortly.Here is the timeline of the 20-year-old case:In October 1998, total three cases in connection with poaching and one under the Arms Act were registered against Salman. Salman found guilty in blackbuck poaching case, 5 acquitted

A Jodhpur court today convicted Bollywood actor Salman Khan in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case but acquitted his colleagues Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Neelam and Sonali Bendre, a prosecution lawyer said. Salman has been held guilty of killing two blackbucks in Kankani village near Jodhpur in October 1998 during the shooting of the film "Hum Saath Saath Hain". A fifth person, Dushyant Singh, a local from the area, has also been acquitted, said Mahipal Bishnoi, the prosecution counsel. Final arguments of the case were completed in the trial court on March 28, after which Chief Judicial Magistrate Dev Kumar Khatri had reserved his judgment. Salman was facing charges under Section 9/51 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act. All the actors were in a Gypsy car on the night of October 1, 1998 that night, with Salman Khan in the driving seat. He spotted a herd of blackbucks and killed two of them, the lawyer said.

Brazil's ex- president faces jail

Quashing his bid to return to power, Brazil's Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that the country's former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will be imprisoned while he appeals his corruption conviction.Chief Justice Carmen Lúcia Antunes Rocha cast the deciding vote, reported the New York Times.He is facing 12 years in jail on charges of accepting a bribe but had asked to remain free during his appeal.Maintaining his innocence, Lula has said that the charges are politically motivated to prevent him running for president again.Silva's Workers' Party, in a statement posted on Twitter, wrote, " No matter how many roses the mighty kill, they will never manage to stop spring."Da Silva, who is known commonly as Lula, was convicted of corruption and money laundering last July and was and sentenced to almost 10 years of imprisonment.However, in January, an appeals court unanimously increased the sentence to 12 years, the report said.Lula served as president from 2003 to 2011.

A West Bengal BJP leader today moved the Supreme Court alleging that his party candidates are not being allowed to file their nomination papers for the upcoming panchayat polls in the state and sought the court's help in the matter. Verdict in black buck poaching case today

The verdict in the 1998 black buck poaching case involving actors Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Tabu is set to be pronounced by a court here today. Elaborate security arrangements have been made in and ouside the court premises ahead of the verdict. New York Police fatally shoots Brooklyn man who pointed pipe at them

New York City police have said that the officers fatally shot a man who was waving a metal object at passersby in Brooklyn.The cops were responding to 911 calls, reporting a black man in a jacket pointing a "silver firearm" at people, who NYPD Chief of Patrol Terence Monahan says "took a two-handed shooting stance" and pointed at them, according to several US media reports.Four officers, three in plainclothes and one in uniform, fired 10 rounds among them, striking the man.The man was rushed to a hospital where the he was pronounced dead.However, it was then that they discovered the man had not been holding a gun, but a pipe with a knob at the end, the reports said.The shooting comes just two weeks after police fatally shot Stephon Clark in Sacramento, California, after receiving calls that someone in the neighborhood was breaking car windows.Stephon Clark, an American black man who was shot dead last week after two law enforcement officers misunderstood him as an accused of breaking .

Suspected LeT terrorists abduct civilian in Bandipora

A group of suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists barged into a house of a man in Hajin area of Jammu and Kashmir's Bandipora district and kidnapped him and his son.The terrorists barged into the residence of Abdul Gaffar Bhat at around 11:45 pm on Wednesday and fired a slew of gunshots at him. CISF nabs 2 for entering Delhi airport with fake tickets

In two different cases, CISF nabbed two accused for entering into terminal building of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) Airport with fake ticket.Among the two accused one is a foreigner. UP: 3-year-old raped, locked inside box by neighbour

In a shocking incident a three-year-old girl was allegedly raped and then locked inside a box by an 18-year-old male neighbour in Uttar Pradesh's Rampur's Tanda town.The incident took place on April 2, when the child was alone at home and her parents were away."On seeing the parents away, the accused lured the child with a chocolate and took her to his house. As the child started screaming and crying in pain the accused in fear left her and fled.
