A Chinese national who lived in Manhattan, Kansas, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for conspiring to steal proprietary rice seeds developed in the US and giving them to visitors from China. Federal prosecutors today announced 51-year-old Weiqiang Zhang's sentence on two counts of conspiracy and one count of interstate transportation of stolen property. He was convicted in February 2017. Zhang was a rice breeder for Ventria Bioscience in Junction City, Kansas, which developed genetically engineered rice for therapeutic and medical fields. Prosecutors said Zhang stored hundreds of seeds from Ventria at his home. In 2013, Zhang toured facilities in the Midwest with officials from a crop research institute in China. Federal officials found Ventria seeds in the visitors' luggage as they prepared to return to China.
Former South African president Jacob Zuma is to appear in court Friday on 16 corruption charges over a suspect arms deal that dogged much of his rule before he was ousted in February. Zuma will attend the brief preliminary hearing at the Durban High Court in his home province of KwaZulu-Natal, ahead of a trial that could send him to jail. A 16-year-old girl was found hanging from a girder fixed on the ceiling of her house, the police said today. The police were informed about the incident yesterday. The girl lived her parents and two siblings Block B in Sultanpuri. Her father works in a private company, the police said. Binani Cement Limited's Committee of Creditors (CoC) have decided to stick with the Rs 6,350 crore offer from Dalmia Bharat Cement for the debt-ridden firm's sale. The decision was taken at a late night meeting of the CoC held in Kolkata. The CoC did not approve the offer from its promoters Binani Industries Ltd. (BIL), which is pitching for Rs 7,266 crore offer from the Aditya Birla Group firm UltraTech Cement, due to legal implications, sources said. The CoC today met in Kolkata after the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) directed it to reconsider the proposal from the promoter BIL. After the meeting, BIL, however, has not ruled out exploring the possibilities of approaching higher authorities challenging the decision of the CoC to sell the BCL to Dalmia Bharat group. "All options for us remain open," said a BIL official, hinting that they may challenge the decision with a higher appellate authority such as the Supreme Court. In an unprecedented move, the Kerala High Court has initiated suo motu proceedings to reverse the acquittal orders issued by a Magistrate court in 1,622 criminal cases. The Administrative Committee of the High Court took the decision recently after considering reports submitted by senior judicial officers that the disposal of 1,622 cases invoking provisions under the CrPC Section 258 (power to stop proceedings in certain cases) was in total disregard of the directions issued by the High Court. The cases involving serious offences under IPC, Abkari Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, were disposed of by the Judicial First Class Magistrate-II-Kollam during June 1, 2016-December 31, 2016 period. The committee, consisting of three judges of the High Court, found that the Magistrate's action stopping proceedings in 1,622 cases was illegal amounting to arbitrary exercise of judicial discretion. A court in Bundi today sentenced two persons to life imprisonment for murdering a local BJP leader in Hindoli town in 2013 over a land dispute, while acquitting three others giving them benefit of doubt. The district and sessions court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on each of the two convicts. Public prosecutor Bhupendra Sahay Saxena said the court sentenced Mahavir Jat and Premshankar Jat, both residents of Hindoli town to life imprisonment for murdering Rajendra Singh, the then head of BJP youth wing of the area. The court, however, acquitted Moti Jat, Parvat Singh Jat and Satyanarayan Jat giving them benefit of doubt, he said. A total 23 witnesses and 57 documents were produced before the court during the trail in the case, the public prosecutor said, adding a decision on filing an appeal against the acquittal of the three persons would be taken after receiving a copy of the order from the court.
The Rajasthan police has registered a case against four employees of a cooperative bank here in an alleged scam of over Rs 8 crore, an official said. Between 2014 and 2017, accused bank manager Yashwant Pareek, then manager Prakash Jain, then cashier Vikas Meena and incumbent cashier Sohan Birania connived to commit the fraud of over Rs 8 crore, he said. "A case has been registered against all four employees at the Reengus police station and an inquiry has been initiated," DSP (Reengus) Manasvi Chaudhary said. He said the scam was exposed in a probe conducted by Sikar Central Cooperative Bank Managing Director Manohar Sharma, after which a complaint was lodged with the police.
In a case of suspected suicide pact, one person died, and his mother and brother are fighting for their lives in a city hospital, police said today. The police, following a phone call from a neighbour, found an elderly woman and her two sons, all unconscious, from their residence in Jadavpur located in southern part of the city. They were taken to a nearby state-run hospital where the elder son was pronounced brought dead, police said. The woman and her other son's condition are stated to be critical, a senior police officer of Jadavpur police station said. "Initial medical test reports said the three had consumed poison. But the reason for their doing so is not yet clear," the officer said. Initial probe revealed that the family was debt ridden, he said.
A sessions court here today issued a bailable warrant against Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel for not being present during the proceedings of framing of charges against him and others in a sedition case. Judge D P Mahida issued the warrant and posted the matter for April 25 for hearing on the framing of charges. In February this year, the court had rejected Patel's discharge application. A case of sedition was registered against Patel by the Ahmedabad crime branch following violence during the agitation for OBC quota for the Patidar community in August 2015. Patel and others are accused of inciting violence with the intention to dislodge the government after a rally addressed by him turned violent in August 2015. At least 13 people died in the violence. Of the six accused in the FIR, two are yet to be arrested, while another person, Ketan Patel, has turned a prosecution witness. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday arrested four persons, including a Principal Commissioner of Delhi Development Authority (DDA), in a bribery case.The premier probe agency arrested JP Aggarwal, Principal Commissioner of DDA and three private persons- Sunil Gupta, Anil Gupta, and JP Sharma.The CBI had registered a case under relevant sections of 120-B of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 7, 12 and 13(2) r/w 13(1)(d) of PC Act, 1988 against all of them.JP Aggarwal, Sunil Gupta and Anil Gupta were apprehended while transacting bribe amount of Rs. 4 lakh for showing an undue favour by the Principal Commissioner of DDA in the matter of allotment of flat. The Chhattisgarh High Court has allowed a 17-year-old rape victim to terminate her pregnancy. Justice Sanjay K Agrawal passed the order yesterday after going through a report submitted by a medical board constituted to examine the girl, her lawyer Parag Kotecha said today. The court directed that a five-member medical team, including the dean of Government Medical College, Raipur, should supervise the abortion, to be conducted tomorrow. The girl's father, a resident of Rajnandgaon district, had filed a writ petition on March 27 this year, seeking permission for abortion, the lawyer said. The high court had asked the Rajnandgaon district hospital to constitute a medical board to examine the girl and submit a report. The report, submitted on April 2, said the girl was 24-26 weeks pregnant. The case of rape had been registered by police in February this year.
