Pak police arrest killers of family of five

Pakistani police today claimed to have arrested the killers of a family of five members, days after the shocking incident sparked by a family feud took place in the country's restive northwest tribal region. The assailants had barged into a house in Chamkani area on the outskirts of Peshawar on Tuesday and opened indiscriminate firing, killing five family members, including two women and as many children. Senior Superintendent of Police operations Peshawar Javed Iqbal told reporters here that main accused Junaid and Amir, brother and brother in law of slain Yahya Khan, were arrested on the outskirts of Peshawar. The accused have confessed to the crime before a police investigation team, he said, adding that weapons used in the killing have also been seized from the accused duo. HC to take up Lalu's bail plea on April 6: Lawyer

Former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad's plea for bail in the fodder scam case involving the Chaibasa treasury is likely to be taken up by the Jharkhand High Court on April 6, his counsel said today. Hearing for the bail petition in the Chaibasa treasury case could not be taken up today and the bench of Aparesh Kumar Singh is likely to take it up on April 6, Prasad's counsel Prabhat Kumar said. The high court had on February 23 rejected the RJD chief's bail petition in the Deoghar treasury case of the scam. Prasad is in jail after he was convicted on December 23 for fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 89.27 lakh from Deoghar treasury in 1997 and sentenced on January 6. The special CBI court had sentenced the RJD leader to three-and-a-half years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on him in the fodder scam case. Kamala Mills owner to SC: Can't be held liable for the fire tragedy

A co-owner of Mumbai's Kamala Mills today told the Supreme Court that he cannot be held liable for the fire tragedy that claimed 14 lives in December last year. The co-owner, Ravi Surajmal Bhandari, who has filed a habeas corpus (a writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a court) also dubbed his arrest as "illegal detention". A bench of Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan questioned senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Bhandari, how he could file a habeas corpus petition when he is in judicial custody. "I can always say that my arrest is illegal detention. It is my right. They have wrongly arrested me for no fault of mine and hence the habeas corpus petition was filed," Rohatgi said. Kerala plus two question paper leak not "confirmed": Min

Kerala Education Minister C Raveendranath today said there is no confirmation that the state plus two physics question paper was leaked through WhatsApp but a case has been registered. The Cyber crime police registered the case soon after reports came in this regard and an investigation is going on, he informed the state Assembly. The second year Kerala Higher Secondary physics examination was held on March 21. The Thrissur district coordinator of the examination had received a set of questions, "similar to the ones that appeared in the exam," on WhatsApp, the minister said. NIA can't probe murder of M M Kalburgi: Centre to SC

The Centre today told the Supreme Court that the NIA, being a special agency to probe national and inter-state terrorism cases, cannot investigate the murder of noted scholar and rationalist M M Kalburgi in 2015 at Dharwad in Karnataka. A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra was hearing the plea of Uma Devi Kalburgi, the widow of the slain scholar, seeking a SIT probe into the sensational murder. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Pinky Anand, appearing for the Centre, referred to the National Investigaiton Agency (NIA) Act and said the instant offence did not fall under the category of 'Schedule offence' under the law and hence, the probe agency cannot investigate it. Aircel-Maxis case: Karti files anticipatory bail plea

After relief in the INX Media case, Karti Chidambaram on Friday filed an anticipatory bail plea in connection with the Aircel-Maxis case against the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).The case relates to the unauthorised Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given by Karti's father and then finance minister P. Ghosh dropped from CWG TT squad, placed under suspension

Soumyajit Ghosh was dropped from India's Commonwealth Games table tennis squad and placed under provisional suspension, a day after he was accused of rape by a teenager in Kolkata. "The Executive Board (EB) of the Table Tennis Federation of India has placed Soumyajit Ghosh under provisional suspension, pending final outcome of the police investigation and court verdict, if any, on the alleged rape charges against him by a teenager," TTFI said in a statement. "During the suspension, he will not be able to participate in any tournament, national or international." Gram Panchayat secretary held while 'taking bribe'

The Madhya Pradesh Lokayukta Police have arrested a Gram Panchayat secretary in the district while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000. Deputy Superintendent of Police Praveen Baghel said that Vinod Prajapati (44), secretary of the Panchayat of Mirzapur village, was arrested while accepting the money in his office yesterday. Prajapati had demanded Rs 20,000 from Bharat Patel, a villager, who had applied for permission to construct a building on his land. After Patel approached the Lokayukta Police, a trap was laid and the secretary was arrested while taking the first instalment of Rs 8,000, the DSP said. A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered and further probe is on, he said.

'All efforts being made to nab Poipynhun Majaw's killers'

Meghalaya Home Minister James K Sangma today said all efforts are being made to nab the culprits involved in the brutal killing of RTI activist from Jaintia Hills, Poipynhun Majaw. Making a statement in the Assembly today, James said that an FIR has been lodged and a case has been registered by the Khliehriat Police Station. "Investigation into the case is on and all-out effort is being made to nab the culprits," he said. Majaw, an RTI activist who fought against the cement plants and the autonomous tribal council for embezzlement of funds, was found murdered at Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills district on March 19. A wrench, used for hitting the slain leader on the head, two Rs 500 notes, a spectacle and a motor bike were also seized by the police, the Home Minister said. 26-yr-old man sentenced to life for burning man to death

A special court today sentenced a 26-year-old man to life imprisonment for burning a hotel owner to death in the city a year ago. The prosecution case was that Prabhu was working in a hotel run by Kannan in the city. Kannan admonished Prabhu for coming drunk and asked him not to come for work. Enraged over the incident, Prabhu went to his house on the night of February seven last year, poured petrol on Kannan and set him ablaze Kannan was admitted to the government hospital with serious burns and was admitted to the government hospital at Theni, where he died on February 27. Special court judge Gunasekharan today sentenced Prabhu to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 on him.

SC sets new date for proceedings in Ayodhya case

Police nabs illegal weapon smugglers in Delhi

Raj municipality officer arrested over graft

An officer working in the Sangaria municipality in Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan was today arrested by the anti-corruption bureau for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 5,000. Sandeep Vishnoi, working as the executive officer at the municipality, was caught red-handed by the bureau officials. According to the officials, the accused had asked money from the complainant for not initiating a probe into the latter's illegal construction activities. A middleman in the case, Vinod Kumar, has also been arrested in the case, they said.

Court reserves order on framing charge against AAP MLA Alka Lamba

A Delhi court has reserved its order on framing of charge against Aam Aadmi Party lawmaker Alka Lamba, accused of allegedly trespassing and vandalising a shop in the city and obstructing the police from performing their duty in 2015. Metropolitan Magistrate Abhilash Malhotra reserved the order after hearing the arguments of the police and the MLA's counsel on the point of charge. It is likely to pronounce the order next week. An FIR was lodged against the MLA from Chandni Chowk on August 10 2015, a day after she had received head injuries in a stone-pelting attack during her anti-drug campaign in Delhi's Kashmere Gate area.
