The Bombay High Court today directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to think about completing the trial in the 2002 fake stamp papers case within a time-bound manner. A bench of Justices S C Dharmadhikari and P D Naik observed that the case that has been investigated by multiple probe agencies, and has a list of over 800 witnesses, was proving not just to be time-consuming, but was also imposing much burden on the judicial system in terms of time and infrastructure. The bench's directions came after it was informed that there were total 67 accused in the case, though many of them were eventually discharged, and that there existed three separate chargesheets, and over 800 witnesses in the case. More than 200 cartons of liquor were seized during raids in Bihar's West Champaran district, police said today, adding eight persons, including a woman, have been arrested in this connection. Sale and consumption of liquor was completely banned in Bihar by the Nitish Kumar government two years ago. One hundred and twenty-one litres of liquor were seized from an ambulance which was coming from Haryana at Mofussil police station area of the district late last night, West Champaran Police Superintendent Jayant Kant said. The driver of the ambulance has been arrested, he said. In another raid conducted in the town police station area, 88 cartons of foreign liquor were seized from a house owned by a retired bank official, the SP said. A couple and five of their accomplices were arrested in this connection, the SP added.
The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education today showcaused the headmaster of a school in Jalpaiguri district for allegedly breaking the seal of the Mathematics paper 35 minutes before the scheduled time of the class 10 board examination on March 19. Board president Kalyanmoy Ganguly said the headmaster of the school at Maynaguri has also been asked to be present at the Board office on March 23 to explain his conduct. A Palestinian teenager arrested after a viral video showed her hit two Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank has reached a plea deal with prosecutors to serve eight months in jail, her lawyer said today. The Israeli military court where Ahed Tamimi is being tried had not yet decided on whether to accept the agreement reached with prosecutors, lawyer Gaby Lasky told AFP. Tamimi was 16 at the time of the December incident. She has since turned 17. The police today arrested a 24-year-old woman for allegedly beating her husband to death following a family dispute in Cuttack district. Police said the body of Gajendra Sahu (42) was found at his house at Ramchandi village under Banki sub-division. The body was found lying in a pool of blood with the hands and legs tied with ropes. The couple used to quarrel a lot, the police said adding that some other person could also be involved in the killing of Sahu.
The Madras High Court today dismissed a habeas corpus petition, seeking that DMK president M Karunanidhi's son M K Muthu be produced in the court, after the latter said he was not in illegal detention. A division bench of justices C T Selvam and N Sathish Kumar dismissed the petition after recording an affidavit filed by Muthu, stating that he was not illegally confined. Petitioner M K M Sheeba Rani, who claimed to be Muthu's daughter, had moved the court, alleging that her "father" was kept in illegal custody by her step-brother. Rani, who claimed that she was born to Muthu and his second wife, had raised doubts on whether her 75-year-old "father" was alive or not and sought a direction to the police to produce him in court.
The Delhi Police today said they have arrested five men, including a Nigerian, were arrested for alleged involvement in drug trafficking after drugs worth Rs two crore were recovered from their possession. The Narcotics Cell of the Crime Branch was assigned the task to launch a special drive for checking the drug menace in Delhi. The Cell took up an initiative against alleged drug peddlers and deployed informers to gain information about such persons, the police said. A 32-year-old man, who allegedly killed his wife and two children by throttling them at his father-in-law's house here, has been arrested, police said today. Sangishetty Surender was arrested last night in connection with the murder of his 24-year-old wife, six-year-old son and three-year-old daughter, a police release said. Surender got married to Varalakshmi in 2011 but after marriage they used to quarrel frequently over family issues, it said. On March 17, Surender took his family to his father-in-law's residence. Yesterday morning the couple quarreled over some family issue, it said. After his father-in-law left the house, he killed his wife and children, the release added.
Decomposed bodies of a man and woman were found hanging from a tree near Gudilova in the district, police said today. The deceased were identified as Y Ramanaji alias Haribabu (32) and B Revathi (28), they said. They were employed in two different private firms. The police found a motorcycle and four mobile phones at the spot but they did not find any suicide letter. Though they took the extreme step a few days ago, it came to light only today when locals found the semi-decomposed bodies and alerted police, Inspector R Govinda Rao said. A Delhi court on Wednesday sought reply from Tihar jail authorities till March 22 on alleged gangster Neeraj Bawana's application.On March 17, Bawana wrote a letter to Patiala House Court in which he talked about the poor condition of the inmates lodged in high-risk ward of the country's largest prison.He threatened to go on a hunger strike if better facilities of food and medicines were not provided to Tihar jail inmates.On November 28 last year, Tihar Jail authorities were asked to file reply on Bawana's plea.In his plea, Bawana had told the court that he was kept in a high-risk ward of Jail Number 1 along with other 45 inmates. The body of a nine-year-old girl was today recovered from a cashew forest near Gadaharishpur village in Ersama police station area of Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district, police said. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of rape and murder, a senior police officer said, adding that the girl went missing last night. "The body was sent for autopsy after its identification by the local people this morning," he said. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed concern over the incident and directed police to nab the culprit at the earliest. The investigative agency said the charges in the case against key accused Indrani Mukerjea, her husband (former media honcho) Peter Mukerjea and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna - were framed in January last year, and that cross examination of the first witness who appeared a month later, was still pending. A fast track court in Ramgarh today sentenced 11 people, including a BJP leader, to life imprisonment for lynching a meat trader in June last year over the suspicion that he was carrying beef in his car. Judge Om Prakash had found them guilty on March 16 under IPC sections 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting with deadly weapons), 149 (unlawful assembly), 435 (mischief by fire or explosive substance) and 302 (murder). The quantum of punishment was pronounced today. A group of people had lynched 40-year-old Alimuddin Ansari in Bazaar Tand locality of Ramgarh town on June 29, 2017, on the suspicion that he was carrying beef in his car.
