HC seeks Maha's reply on plea seeking amendments to MTP Act

The Bombay High Court today issued a notice to the Maharashtra government on a PIL seeking amendments to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act to allow rape victims to undergo an abortion even after the currently-permitted limit of 20 weeks. The plea filed by a local NGO has cited previous incidents, where the apex court and several high courts were forced to deny such a permission to rape victims, owing to the limitations of the act. Under the MTP Act, a woman can legally undergo an abortion under the supervision of a registered medical practitioner within 12weeks of her pregnancy. In case the woman has been pregnant for over 12 weeks but less than 20weeks, the opinion of two medical practitioners is required for an abortion. However, in such cases, there is a substantial risk to the woman's life or to her unborn child if she opts for an abortion. Alimuddin Murder Case: Ramgarh court hands life imprisonment to 11 accused

A Ramgarh Court on Wednesday sentenced the 11 accused in connection with the Alimuddin murder case in Ramgarh district to a lifetime in prison.Alimuddin, also known as Asgar Ansari, was intercepted by a mob and beaten to death in June last year over suspicions of transporting beef in his vehicle near Bazartand village. The mob later set the vehicle ablaze.Following the lynching incident, section 144 was imposed in Ramgarh.The incident happened a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to castigate the violence over beef consumption and illegal cattle trade."Killing people in the name of gau bhakti is not acceptable. This is not something Mahatma Gandhi would approve of." tweeted Modi, adding that no one would be allowed to take the law into their owns hands.The Vice-President, M. Venkaiah Naidu, also condemend the incident, saying the matter must not be viewed from a religious angle.

Three run over by minibus

At least three persons, including a 9-year-old girl and her father, were run over and killed and a woman was seriously injured today by a minibus in Odisha's Ganjam district, the police said. The minibus from Digapahandi was on way to Chikiti when it first ran over a 65-yar old at Kolathia village and then crushed a bike in which a couple and their daughter were travelling, the sub-divisional police officer of Chikiti, Prakash Chandra Jena said. The person on foot and the man on the bike were killed on the spot while his daughter died on way to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here, he said. The man's wife is under treatment at the hopsital, where doctors said her condition was serious.

Man gets 8-yr RI for kidnapping, raping minor girl

A court here today awarded eight years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) to a man for raping a minor girl after kidnapping her in the district in 2007. Fast-Track Court judge Mohammad Khurshid Alam held Vijay Kumar Sah alias Pappu guilty under section 376 (rape) of the IPC and sentenced him to eight years of RI. The court also awarded the convict another seven-year jail term under section 366(A) (procuration of minor girl) of the IPC and a four-year jail term under section 365 (kidnapping) of the IPC. All the three sentences will run concurrently. The victim girl was kidnapped and raped on March 9, 2007.

53-yr-old man gets life for sexually assaulting 4-yr-old girl

A court here today sentenced a 53-year-old man to rigorous life imprisonment for sexually assaulting his daughter's four-year-old friend and said he was a "paedophile" who violated a child. The offence was committed on a "vulnerable" child, who was an "easy prey", and adequate sentence was required to be imposed on him to keep public faith in the justice delivery system, the court said. Additional Sessions Judge Nivedita Anil Sharma handed down the jail term to west Delhi resident Akhilesh Arya for the offence of sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, while observing there should be "zero tolerance" to such offences. Diamond baron Vasant Gajera held for usurping Surat land

Prominent diamantaire Vasant Gajera, owner of jewellery manufacturing firm Laxmi Diamond, was today arrested for allegedly forging property documents to usurp a piece of land in Vesu area of the city, police said. He is the brother of Congress leader Dhiru Gajera who unsuccessfully contested the December 2017 elections from Varachha Road constituency in the city. Gajera was summoned to Umra police station and was arrested after questionning, an official said. In a complaint lodged against Gajera in 2003, one Vajubhai Malani claimed that the former had forged the documents to usurp his land and constructed a compound wall around it. Malani later moved the high court after police failed to act on his complaint. Stating that an offence was made out against Gajera, the high court had ordered police to register an FIR. Suspected extortionist held in Goa

A 37-year-old history sheeter from Delhi was arrested today in Goa in connection with an extortion case pending against him in Rajasthan, police said. Ravinder Kumar Singh was arrested from Candolim village in North Goa beach belt by Calangute police on a tip off, said police inspector Jivba Dalvi. Singh, a residence of Hauz Khas in Delhi, has been absconding since February 7 after he was booked for extortion by Vigyan Nagar police in Rajasthan. Dalvi said the accused had arrived in Goa last week. Singh was traced to Candolim on the basis of a photograph circulated by Rajasthan police. "A team of Rajasthan police is arriving here tonight to take the custody of the accused," he said.

14 arrested for rape of minor tribal girl

Fourteen persons have been arrested on charges of raping a 15-year-old tribal girl on March 11, police said today. A search is on for another accused who is absconding, Deputy Superintendent of Police Manguru (Sub-Division) R Saibaba said. Fourteen persons in the age group of 20-25 had allegedly raped the girl in a forest area near Pandurangapuram village in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district of the state. After committing the crime, the gang dropped the girl at the house of a 45-year-old man, who also allegedly raped her in the night the same day, Deputy Superintendent of Police Manguru (Sub-Division) R Saibaba said. Ready to proceed with hearing in Nissan case, TN informs HC

The Tamil Nadu government today informed the Madras High Court that it was ready to proceed with the hearing in the case it filed against Japanese auto-maker Nissan and that it need not be deferred. Earlier, when the case had come up before Justice Anita Sumanth, senior counsel P S Raman, appearing for Nissan, had hinted at the possibility of an amicable solution with the government. Two held for smuggling gold worth Rs 1.4 cr at Delhi airport

Two men were today arrested by the customs for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold valuing about Rs 1.4 crore at Delhi airport, an official statement said. The arrests took place in two separate incidents. In the first case, a passenger was intercepted after his arrival from Dammam. "His personal and baggage search resulted in recovery of gold weighing 2.5 kg, in the form of 40 pieces of sheet concealed in the ten emergency light battery carried by him, having market value of Rs 75.65 lakh," the statement issued by the customs said. In the other case, the accused was intercepted after his arrival from Dubai. He was allegedly carrying gold weighing 1.9 kg, valued at Rs 58.09 lakh, by concealing it inside cardboard boxes and school bags being carried by him, it said. The value of the gold, which has been seized, in these two cases is about Rs 1.4 crore, the statement said, adding that both the passengers have been arrested.

Bawana fire: Factory owner, 6 others chargesheeted by police

The Delhi Police today filed a charge sheet in a city court against the owner of a firecracker factory in northwest Delhi, where 17 people were killed in a massive blaze earlier this year. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Gagandeep Singh, before whom the police filed the document, took cognisance of the charge sheet and summoned factory owner Manoj Jain, co-owner Lalit Goyal and five others as accused before it on April 4. A fire had broken out in the storage unit on the ground floor of the two-storey building in Bawana area on January 20 and engulfing the entire structure. Of the 17 killed, 10 were women. A man and woman were also injured in the incident. The Madras High Court has upheld the life sentence awarded to a man, who sexually assaulted his minor daughter, observing that he had behaved like a beast and committed a brutal, inhuman and shameful act. A tribunal to prosecute all disputes in respect of waqf property and waqf issues has been reconstituted, the AAP government told the Delhi High Court today. The submission was made before a bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar, which was hearing a plea seeking setting up of a tribunal to hear waqf matters. JKLA panel calls for technical inquiry into allotment of construction works for Ganpat Bridge

A Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly committee today directed the PWD to constitute a technical panel to probe the process of allotment of construction works for the Ganpat bridge in Doda district. The directions were issued by the Committee on Public Undertakings (PUC). The committee noted that works for the bridge's construction were allotted without inviting any tender in 2010-11. The payment of unsecured interest free mobilisation advance to the contractor resulted in an undue favour to the contractor and interest loss of Rs 1.64 crore, it said.
