Two arms smugglers were arrested with one carbine, seven pistols, one revolver and 420 live cartridges in Rajasthan's Sikar district today, police said. Based on a tip-off, the accused Chandra Bhan and Naresh were arrested during a search at a check post, they said. They tried evading arrest but were nabbed after a chase, the police said. The accused were about to deliver the weapons to a syndicate, Sikar SP Vineet Rathore said. One carbine, seven pistols, one revolver and 420 live cartridges were recovered from their possession, he said. The accused are being interrogated, he added.
Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal today accepted the apology of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy over the charges levelled against him and his son in Vodafone tax revision case. "Today, Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia have accepted that all the charges (levelled) were baseless. He apologised for this. We have accepted the apology. We do not want to fight with anyone," Sibal told reporters here. In a complaint filed by Sibal's son Amit Sibal in 2013, it was alleged that Kejriwal, Sisodia, lawyer Prashant Bhushan and Shazia Ilmi, who was then an AAP member, had targeted him and his father over the Vodafone tax revision case. Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia were today acquitted by a city court after the two tendered an apology to Sibal. In his letter, Kejriwal said he regretted making the remarks without any verification and accepted that they were based on "unfounded allegations".
Four persons were today arrested for their alleged involvement in shooting dead a corporator from Pandharpur yesterday, police said. Independent corporator Sandeep Pawar was shot at outside a local hotel in Pandharpur yesterday afternoon and he succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital later, police said. Officials said that an Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) team led by senior inspector Pradeep Sharma arrested four persons today and recovered two pistols from them. Police identified the four as Akshay alias Bablu Survase, Pundalik Vanare, Manoj Shirsekar and Bhaktraj Dhumal. They added that Survase was from Sangli while the other three hailed from Pandharpur. Investigations into the motive of the crime continued, said officials.
Two Bangladeshi nationals were today arrested by the Pune unit of Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) for allegedly providing shelter to suspected terrorists of the Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), an Islamic extremist group based in Bangladesh, officials said. While one of them was arrested from Ambarnath in Thane district, another was apprehended from Mahad in Raigad district, a senior ATS official said. According to the official, the two arrested accused, aged between 24 and 30 years, are residents of Shasha district in Bangladesh. The officer, however, did not reveal the names of the two. The ABT is an al-Qaeda-inspired Islamic extremist group in Bangladesh, he said. A preliminary enquiry revealed that the two arrested accused were involved in harbouring and providing logistical support to suspected ABT terrorists during their stay in Pune, the official added. They were staying in the country without any valid travel documents, besides being in possession of fraudulently-obtained .
Two senior transport department officials were arrested from Etawah district today for their alleged involvement in preparing fake challans and counterfeit documents for vehicles, police said. Additional Road Transport Officer (ARTO) (Administration) Himanshu Jain and ARTO (Enforcement) Mohammad Azim, posted in Etawah, were arrested from Eidhgah, a police spokesperson said. The duo were arrested after broker Pradeep Gupta, alias Gudda, who was arrested yesterday, revealed the names during questioning, he added. Gupta was arrested from the Regional Transport Office with fake documents. During interrogation, he confessed that he used to work for the ARTOs and that he made fake challans for money, the official said. Police seized over Rs 3 lakh cash, a diary, stamps and documents of the transport department from Gupta, he added. The Supreme Court today admitted for hearing an appeal against the acquittal of dentist couple Rajesh and Nupur Talwar in the 2008 twin murder case of their daughter Aarushi and domestic help Hemraj. The plea was filed by Khumkala Banjade, the wife of Hemraj. A bench comprising justices Ranjan Gogoi and R Banumathi granted permission to file the special leave petitions and summoned the original case records from the trial court. The dentist couple were acquitted by the Allahabad High Court in the twin murder case in October last year. Banjade had filed an appeal on December 15 last year against the Talwars' acquittal in the case. Later, the CBI also filed an appeal against their acquittal in the case. Police said Deepa (40), the elderly woman's granddaughter, was booked under various sections of IPC, including gain by unlawful means of property to which the person is not legally entitled. The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has suo motu registered a case and sought report from the district police chief in a month's time. Police today claimed to have busted an inter-state gang of robbers from Dasanapalli in Aska area of Odisha's Ganjam district by arresting nine persons. The gang members, arrested late yesterday night while they were preparing for a major crime, were involved in several robbery cases in different places of Odisha and neighbouring West Bengal, said Inspector In-Charge of Aska police station, Santosh Kumar Jena. A country-made gun, three bombs, two swords and a motorcycle were seized from their possession, he said. The top court expressed dissatisfaction over the report submitted by the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) regarding the financial details of Khadim Hussain Rizvi, the leader of the religious party behind the Faizabad sit-in in November last year that brought the Pakistani capital to a standstill. The apex court had taken note of the anti-judiciary remarks during the protests that killed at least six people. A two-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Qazi Faez Isa, heard the case today. A nine-year-old boy shot dead his sister, 13, in the southern US state of Mississippi following an argument about a video game controller, local media reported today. The tragedy took place Saturday when the girl refused to give up the controller, Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell said according to reports. The boy then opened fire, striking his sister in the back of the head. The bullet pierced through girl's brain, and she was taken to a hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, in critical condition. She died Sunday. An investigation was opened to determine how the young boy had access to a firearm and to what extent he was aware of the danger. Such accidents are not rare in the United States, where the debate on gun control rages on.
A case has been registered against Deepak Nikalje, the brother of jailed gangster Chhota Rajan, for alleged rape and sexual harassment based on the complaint of a 22-year-old woman, police said today. Officials said that the woman, who used to reside in Siddharth Colony in suburban Chembur, in her complaint yesterday, alleged that Nikalje exploited her on the promise of marriage. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone VI, Sahaji Umap, said, "We recorded her statement and based on it, a 'zero FIR' was registered by Tilak Nagar police (under whose jurisdiction Siddharth Colony falls). Later a case under section 376 (rape), 354 (sexual harassment)and 313 (causing miscarriage without women's consent) of IPC was registered against the accused." A panel, set up to recommend a hike in the salaries of lower court judges, has proposed a 30-per cent interim relief for the judicial officers. The National Judicial Pay Commission, which submitted its interim report to the Supreme Court last week, has recommended a 30-per cent interim relief to the lower court judges, on the existing basic pay, from January 1, 2016. A statement from the commission said the judicial officers working in the Delhi State Judicial Services would not be entitled to draw the proposed interim relief as they were already drawing salaries as per the scales recommended by the 7th Pay Commission. The commission was set up following a Supreme Court order and its recommendation may come up before an apex court bench in the coming days. The pensioners will be getting the arrears on a pro ratio basis, by a 30-per cent increase on the current basic pay, from January 1, 2016, "which is regardless to commuted pension", the commission has said.
