Continuing their crackdown against drug racket here, police on Sunday arrested a drug peddler from West Bengal's South 24 parganas district and seized synthetic drug 'Ecstasy' and large amount of foreign currency from him.

Youth dies as 'drunk' woman rams car into two-wheeler

A 20-year-old man died and his friend was injured after a car-driven by a woman CA student, who was allegedly drunk, rammed into their scooter here, police said today. The incident occurred close to midnight yesterday when Ramayanam Chiranjeevi, working with a food delivery firm and his friend, were on their way for a delivery, they said. "The woman, a CA student, drove her car in a rash and negligent manner in drunken condition and hit the scooter resulting in Chiranjeevi and his friend Saikumar falling down on the road and both received severe bleeding injuries," a police official said. They were admitted to a private hospital where Chiranjeevi succumbed to injuries, police said. A case had been registered and the 26-year old woman who was allegedly under the influence of liquor at the time of the accident, police said. The woman, who suffered minor injuries, had been taken into custody, police said adding further investigation was on.

Not pressuring Modi Chowk murder victim's family: Bihar police

The allegations that Bihar Police is pressuring the family of Modi Chowk victim are totally "baseless", Darbhanga Deputy Superintendent of Police Dilnawaz Ahmad said on Sunday.The DSP also said the police had audio-video clips of the family's statements."The senior superintendent of police (SSP) is monitoring the case and we are investigating as per his direction. The allegations that we have pressured them (family) for making certain kind of statements is baseless," Ahmad told ANI.The father of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Tej Narayan Yadav on Friday night was allegedly attacked and killed by 40 to 50 men on bikes at Modi Chowk for naming the square on the outskirts of Darbhanga after Prime Minister Narendra Modi.The police had said the murder was due to an old land dispute and had no connection with the naming of the chowk.The victim's son and BJP leader alleged that the bike-borne assailants beheaded his 70-year-old father near Sadar Police Station area and also injured his .

Man refused entry to UK nightclub rams car into venue

A 21-year-old man is in police custody on suspicion of attempted murder after he rammed his car into a nightclub in south-east England in anger over being denied entry to the venue that left at least thirteen people injured. Kent Police said 13 people had been injured in the incident late last night at Gravesend, Kent, which was not being treated as terror-related. This was a frightening experience for everyone involved and it is a miracle that nobody was killed, said Detective Chief Inspector David Chewter, the investigating officer from the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate. 8 people injured in stone pelting in Rajasthan

Eight persons, including three policemen, were injured when unidentified miscreants allegedly pelted stones at people participating in Bhagwa rally on the occasion of Nav Samvatsar in Tonk district of Rajasthan today, police said. Section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed in the area and additional policemen have been deployed to maintain law and order in the district, SP Tonk Yogesh Dadhich said. "The incident occurred this evening when the rally was being taken out by a Hindu organisation and stones were pelted at them in front of a mosque," Dadhich told PTI. Two motorcycles were also set on fire after the stone pelting incident, he said. The SP said that additional policemen have been deployed in the area, and efforts are on to identify and nab the accused persons.

Man held with sophisticated telecom equipment

A man possessing sophisticated telecom equipment was today arrested by security forces from Rahimpur, a village near Indo-Bangla border in Sonamura sub-division of Sipahijala district, police said. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of state police, BSF and BSNL officials raided the house of one Abdul Chhalam this morning and arrested him, Superintendent of Police (Control) Pradip De told reporters. Several high-end equipment including mobile signal booster, illegal call diverting systems and mobile antenna were recovered from his possession. Kulwinder Kumar, Deputy Director General of North East, Department of Telecommunication, Government of India had filed an FIR at Kalamchoura police station yesterday saying Abdul Chhalam and his two sons were possessing the illegal equipment. However, the two sons of the accused fled during the raid. Police is investigating the case and trying to find out if he had any terror links.

2 Nigerians among 3 held for 'peddling' cocaine in Hyd'bad

: Two Nigerian businessmen and a local woman were today arrested here on the charge of drug peddling, police said. Acting on a tip-off, police raided a house at Puppalguda and seized 80 gm of cocaine worth Rs 4 lakh from the three, a police release said. Police arrested businessmen Idhu Plus (45), Emmanuel Umudu (43) and the latter's wife Leela Shiva Kumar, a finance consultant. Emmanuel and Iduh had migrated to India on business visas and had been allegedly involved in sale of the narcotic in Mumbai. In December last, Emmanuel married Leela, a native of Mumbai, and later they shifted to Hyderabad, it added.

Unidentified body of man found in Malad in Mumbai

Police today found an unidentified body of a man, in his forties, in the Maitri Park area of suburban Malad here. Officials informed that the man was possibly hit with a stone as a blood-stained one was recovered close to where the body was lying. They added that they could not find a wallet or any other identifying documents on his person. "A case of murder has been registered and further investigations are underway," a Dindosh police official said.

Gujarat: four killed in accident

Four persons including a five-year-old girl were killed when the car in which they were travelling was hit by a speeding truck in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat today, police said. The accident took place near Deriya village in Talod tehsil, police said, adding that all four victims died on the spot. "A speeding truck rammed a Honda City car near Deriya village head-on, killing all four persons in the car, while the truck driver sustained minor injuries," a Talod police station official said. The car was coming from Ahmedabad and was on the way to Dhansura in Aravalli district. The deceased were identified as Nanjibhai Patel (58), Leelaben Patel (55), Shardaben Patel (51) and Honey (5).

Girl 'commits suicide' after fight with brother over TV remote

A 19-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide in Thane district because her brother refused to hand over the remote control of TV to her, police said. The incident took place at Kambe village in Bhiwandi tehsil of the district on Friday. Soanli (19) had a quarrel with her younger brother when he refused to give the remote control to her, said an official of Nizampura police station. While her brother wanted to watch a cricket match, she wanted to watch her favourite serial. As she missed the serial, she went into her room in a fit a rage and hanged herself from the ceiling, police said. Further probe is on.

Delhi Police arrests double murder accused from UP

The Delhi Police have arrested a wanted criminal, accused in a double murder case of April last year, from Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. Adil, the sharpshooter of a notorious gang based in north-east Delhi and carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his arrest, was held yesterday by a Special Cell team of the Delhi Police which had been after him and his accomplices who were involved in the double murder of a rival gang's members, a senior officer said. Adil and around six others of his gang had on April 19 last year shot down two members of a rival gang and injured a third in the Jaffrabad area, the officer said, adding all of them went into hiding after the crime. The team was tracking the movements of the prime accused's wife, a lawyer whom he married while in hiding, and apprehended him when he had gone to meet her, the officer said in a statement released by the police to the media. Woman's decomposed body recovered, son found seated beside

The decomposed body of a 70-year-old woman was recovered today with her son sitting by the side at Bowbazar area here, police said. The son, aged around 30, was found to be emaciated and not in a position to speak, a police officer of Muchipara police station said, adding, he was later taken to a state-run hospital. The neighbours informed police after foul smell emanated from the house, located on Sasibhusan Dey Street. Police broke open the door of the house that was bolted from inside and found the woman's decomposed body lying on the bed, the officer said. "While the body was taken for post-mortem, the son was rushed to hospital as he appeared unwell and without food for days," he said. According to the neighbours, the woman had been suffering from age-related ailments for some time, police said.

13 people hurt as car drives into club in UK

A man who was kicked out of a night club in the UK later returned to the venue and drove his car into partygoers today, injuring at least thirteen people. Police were called after a Suzuki Vitara drove into Blake's in Gravesend, Kent. It is believed the driver had been asked to leave the club in Queen Street after an earlier altercation. A witness has described "a complete mess of panic and chaos". Shocked clubbers fled out onto the street as the emergency services arrived. Kent Police said it is not being treated as a terror-related incident. A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. Latvian woman came for Ayurveda treatment goes missing in Ker

A 33-year-old Latvian woman, who came here for Ayurveda treatment, has gone missing from nearby Kovalam beach, police said. The woman Liga, had come to the state capital along with her sister Ilzie some weeks ago. Liga was suffering from mental depression and had been staying at a private Ayurveda treatment centre at nearby Pothencode. She went to nearby Kovalam from the treatment centre in an autorickshaw on March 14 morning, after which she had gone missing, they said. A case has been registered based on the complaint from the authorities of the treatment centre. Investigation has been intensified to trace Liga, police said, adding, that the Latvian embassy authorities had been informed about the matter. Ilzie is still in Thiruvananthapuram, police said.

7 militants sentenced to death for killing Sufi shrine caretaker

Seven militants, including neo-JMB terror group's regional chief, were sentenced to death today in Bangladesh for killing a Sufi shrine caretaker in 2015. The militants hacked Rahmat Ali, the caretaker of a shrine, and slit his throat on November 10, 2015. The militant group is ideologically opposed the moderate Sufi philosophy, which calls for universal fraternity and interfaith harmony. Police filed charges against 15 people in the case. The court indicted the suspects on August 16 last year. A court in Rangpur has sentenced seven militants, including neo-JMB regional commander Masud Rana, to death for the murder. "Six of the seven convicts faced the trial in person and were present on the dock as Judge Naresh Chandra Sarker pronounced the verdict. . . the rest is on the run," a prosecution lawyer told PTI as he was reached in Dhaka by phone. Undertrial prisoner escapes from jail

An undertrial prisoner, lodged in a sub-jail in Kendrapara, escaped from the prison, police said today. The prisoner was facing trial for murder, the police said. The undertrial prisoner scaled the wall of the jail yesterday night and escaped, a police officer said. The state prison administration has started an investigation into the jailbreak incident and a case has been registered at the Sadar police station in this connection, the officer said. Man kills mother, walks into police station with 'severed' head

A 30-year-old man sent the personnel of a police station in the district into a tizzy when he walked in with the "severed head" of his mother after allegedly killing her today, police said. They said Anand was having frequent quarrels with his mother Rani, a widow, over a property dispute. After an argument over the issue this morning in their house, he allegedly beheaded her with a sharp weapon, carried it all the way to the Karambakudi police station and surrendered, the police said. The slain woman was acquitted in a case relating to the murder of her husband 10 years ago, they added. The police said Anand was arrested.

Two headless bodies found in Sambhal

Two headless bodies of a woman and a minor boy were found here this morning, police said. "Headless bodies of a woman aged 30-35 years and a boy aged around 8-9 years were found in an agriculture field in Chimiawali village which comes under the jurisdiction of Sambhal Kotwali police station area," Additional superintendent of police Pankaj Pandey said. Dog squad and forensic team have been called. Apart from this, information about missing persons from the area is also being collected, he said.
