Three more in custody in connection with YC leader's murder

Three more CPI(M) workers were taken into custody today in connection with the February 12 murder of Youth Congress functionary S P Shuhaib here, police said. The three were nabbed from a hide out at Virajpet in Karnataka, police said. Two CPI(M) workers have been already been arrested in connection with the killing even as the Congress alleged that they were not the real culprits. Congress-led UDF Opposition in Kerala had demanded a CBI probe into the killing of the Youth Congress functionary. Senior Congress leader, K Sudhakaran, who was staging a huger strike here for the last five days demanding the arrest of the real culprits behind the killing, had also stated yesterday that he would continue the stir till the government order a CBI investigation in the case. The 29-year-old Youth Congress Mattannur block leader Shuhaib was hacked to death on February 13 by a group of persons, suspected to be belonging to the CPI(M).

Town bishop, 4 others booked in college financial fraud case

A case has been registered against five persons, including the Tirunelveli zone Bishop, for allegedly committing financial irregularities to the tune of Rs 91.90 lakh in a self-financing college managed by them, police said today. They said the case was filed against former principal of the Nallur CSI Annabagyam College, Joel Jayamani, CSI Tirunelveli zone bishop J J Christhudoss, V.Kaanthiyah Nallapandi, R Jayakumar Jayaraj and Thomas K Omen on the orders of a judicial magistrate court. The college administrator S P T Nelson had given a complaint to police that financial irregularities had been committed in the college managed by the Church of South India (CSI) and sought action against those responsible. However, the police did not take any action following which he moved the court, Nelson submitted in court recently. Two govt engineers caught accepting bribe by vigilance

Vigilance bureau sleuths today arrested two engineers posted in the Bihar building construction deparment whom it caught red-handed while accepting close to Rs 90,000 in bribe. A trap was laid by a team led by Vigilance Deputy S P Kanishk Kumar Singh which was acting on the complaint of a contractor Ramesh Shankar Pandey against executive engineer Amarendra Kumar and junior engineer Vidyasagar. The complainant had accused the two officials of demanding a bribe for payments against the bill he had submitted upon construction of a hospital, sources in the vigilance department said. The bill amount was Rs 50 lakh out of which payment for Rs 30 lakh was pending. At their office this morning, Amarendra was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 33,000 while Vidyasagar was caught red-handed taking Rs 55,000. The engineers were being interrogated and will be produced before a designated court, the sources added.

650 cartons of illicit liquor seized in Rajasthan; 3 held

Three people, including an oil tanker driver, were arrested today after 605 cartons of illicit liquor worth nearly Rs 30 lakh was found inside the tanker here, police said. A drive against the illicit liquor mafia is being conducted in the district. Acting on a tip-off, the oil tanker was intercepted on the Bikaner-Jaisalmer national highway. A total of 605 cartons of liquor were found stashed inside it, Naal police station SHO Dharam Punia said. The arrested were identified as Birdaram Bheel, Ramesh Bheel and Nalin Bishnoi, he said, adding that the accused revealed that they had loaded the tanker in Ambala and had to deliver the consignment in Gujarat. A case was registered against them under sections of the Rajasthan Excise Act, the SHO said.

Rape accused arrested in J-K's Rajouri

An absconder, wanted in connected with kidnapping and rape of a woman, was arrested in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said today. The accused, a resident of Dhangri, was wanted in connection with a abduction and rape case registered last year and was on the run, a police spokesman said. He said the accused was arrested by a party of women police station from Rajouri town last night.

AP: Man found killed in Sankavaram mandal

A man was found killed in a brutal manner at Vajrakutam village in Sankavaram mandal of East Godavari district today, police said. The victim was identified as S Rambabu, said Prathipadu circle inspector A Srinivasa Rao. Rambabu took his sheep for grazing today morning, and when in the evening the sheep returned but he was nowhere to be seen, his family started a search. They found his burnt body on the outskirts of the village, the inspector said. While nobody has been arrested, police suspect that the killing may be a fall-out of enmity between two groups in the village, said senior inspector Pardhasaradhi.

Four arrested, 74 kgs of ganja seized near Yavatmal

Four people were arrested and 74 kilograms of ganja was seized in Arni, some 35 kilometres from here, police said today. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Assistant Police Inspector Santosh Manwar nabbed the four from Kathodi village yesterday night, they added. Police said that the contraband was worth Rs 5.89 lakh in the illegal drug market. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and further investigations were underway, police said.

Lucknow court hands over custody of Vikram, Rahul Kothari to CBI

A CBI court today handed over the custody of Rotomac pens owner Vikram Kothari and his son Rahul Kothari to the investigating agency for 11 days in connection with alleged loan default to the tune of Rs 3,695 crore. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today produced the Kotharis in the court of special judge M P Chaudhari after bringing them here on transit remand from Delhi. The judge first took them in judicial custody and later remanded them in CBI custody for 11 days. Both Vikram Kothari and his son have been booked for cheating a consortium of seven nationalised banks. Vikram Kothari's wife Sadhna Kothari is also accused in the case. The CBI arrested the father-son duo on Thursday in Delhi after the agency alleged the accused were not cooperating with the probe. On a complaint of Bank of Baroda, the CBI had registered an FIR against the Kotharis for allegedly defaulting on loans taken by Rotomac Global Private Ltd. from the consortium of banks from 2008 onwards. Egypt court fines leading activist over insulting judiciary

An Egyptian court has fined one of the leading activists behind the 2011 uprising 10,000 Egyptian pounds (USD 565) during his re-trial over insulting the judiciary. Today's ruling on Ahmed Douma, reported by the state-run Al Ahram newspaper, is a response to his appeal against a 2014 ruling in the case sentencing him to three years in prison plus the fine. In 2015, Douma was sentenced to life in prison in another case dating back to December 2011, when clashes erupted between protesters and security forces outside Egypt's Cabinet building. Douma, who was granted a retrial in that case last October, faces accusations of illegal protesting, assaulting security personnel and attacking government buildings. Since the 2013 ouster of an elected Islamist president, Egypt has jailed thousands of dissidents.

Suspect in killing of Filipina maid interrogated in Lebanon

Lebanese security and judicial officials say authorities in Beirut are interrogating a man who is suspected in the death of a Filipina maid whose body was found stuffed in a freezer in Kuwait. A senior official with Lebanon's General Security Directorate refused to provide details other than that the man is being held by the agency and undergoing questioning. A judicial official said Saturday Lebanese citizen Nader Essam Assaf was handed over by Syrian authorities to Lebanon Friday. He added that the man's Syrian wife is in Syria. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. Assaf and his wife are suspects in the death of Joanna Demafelis. Yesterday, the Philippine foreign secretary said the suspect is under arrest in Lebanon.

Three arrested in WB with gold worth Rs 1.2 crore

Three people have been arrested from New Jalpaiguri Railway station near Siliguri in West-Bengal with gold worth Rs 1.2 crore.Acting on a tip off the Director of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Siliguri unit, seized Switzerland Gold bars and biscuits last night. The bars and biscuits weighted 3.618kg.The gold is believed to be of foreign origin and estimated to be valued around 1.2 crore in the market.The gold was seized from Padatik Express which was coming from Coochbehar.According to Ratan Banik, lawyer for the DRI, the three arrested persons, Nitish Debnath, Rupam Sen and Pradip Debnath are residents of Coochbehar. The three accused were produced in a court in Siliguri by the DRI officers today.

Tribal lynching: 11 arrested, Centre seeks report

Eleven persons have been arrested in connection with the lynching to death of a tribal man for allegedly stealing articles from some shops in Palakkad district even as the Centre sought a report from the state over the incident. The arrest was made after the post-mortem report revealed that the deceased Madhu had injuries on the head and bruises all over the body, police said. There was internal bleeding and he had broken ribs, the report said. The post-mortem was conducted at the Thrissur Medical College. "Eleven persons have been arrested in the case. Some more persons, suspected to be involved in the incident, are under custody and being interrogated," Agali Deputy Superintendent of Police T K Subrahmanyan told PTI. 'Delhi HC asks I-T dept not to take coercive action against NDTV '

New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV) today said the Delhi High Court has directed the tax department not to take any coercive action against it for a period of 10 days in case the assessing officer in the Rs 436.80 crore tax case for 2009-10 rejects the stay. The Income Tax Department has levied a penalty of Rs 436.80 crore for assessment year 2009-10 on NDTV and the news channel has filed a writ petition against the order by the I-T Department. In this regard we wish to inform you that the company has now received the copy of the court order wherein the tax department has been directed not to take any coercive action against the company for a period of 10 days in case of rejection of stay by the Assessing Officer," NDTV said in a regulatory filing. The company has been slapped I-T notice under section 271 (1) (c) of the I-T Act which provides for levying penalty in case an assessee has concealed income particulars or furnished inaccurate details.

One tonne of gelatine sticks seized from lorry, driver held

In a major haul of explosives, police today seized about one tonne of gelatine sticks from a lorry in the district and one person has been arrested in this connection. Police said a team led by SI Abilash of Mukkam police station intercepted the vehicle with Tamil Nadu registration number near Mukkam around 9.30 am and seized the explosives packed in 45 boxes. Each box contained 200 gelatine sticks. The driver, Mathesh, hailing from Salem in Tamil Nadu was arrested under various sections of the Explosives Substances Act as he failed to furnish documents for transporting the explosives, they said.

Police today claimed to have arrested three persons and recovered four quintal poppy husk and one kg opium from their possession. The accused were arrested after their car was checked at Denowal village, police said., adding that poppy husk and opium were recovered from their possession. Man commits suicide after killing wife, two sons; family feud suspected

A 42-year-old man allegedly killed his wife and two sons before committing suicide at his home in sector 15 here, police said today, suspecting a family dispute might have triggered the gruesome act. Satish, an agriculturalist, allegedly murdered his 40-year-old wife and their two sons, aged 14 and 12 years, by slitting their throats with a sharp edged weapon, they said. He then ended his life by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his home, a police official said. Satish, along with his family, was living as a tenant. His wife was a government teacher. He was resident of nearby Bhadana village in the district. Police suspected that family dispute could be the reason behind the incident, though investigations were underway. The landlord raised an alarm in the morning when he did not see any movement of his tenants. Police broke open the door and found the bodies of the family members in the house. The bodies have been sent to a local hospital for post mortem, police said.

2 gang of blackmailers busted in Punjab

Police today busted two gang of blackmailers allegedly involved in unnatural sex by inducing innocent persons and blackmailing them after making their pornographic videos, with the arrest of one person. Senior Superintendent of Police Sandip Sharma said here that the man has been identified as Paramjit Singh and his accomplice Ranjit Singh, both residents of Jalandhar. Paramjit has been arrested while Ranjit, however, managed to flee, he said. The gang used to operate at Jalandhar and Kapurthala bus stands for the past more than one year and had fleeced more than 2 lakhs from three victims after threatening them of making their videos viral, Sharma said. Chidambaram moves SC for protection of fundamental rights

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram has approached the Supreme Court seeking protection of his fundamental rights, including the right to privacy, amid summons to his son Karti Chidambaram and raids by the CBI and the ED in connection with cases related to Aircel-Maxis and INX Media.
