An assistant engineer from the state's irrigation department was arrested today by the Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe. Deputy Superintendent of Police, ACB, K Ramakrishna Prasad, said that Assistant Engineer A Prakash of the Chodavaram office of the irrigation department was arrested while accepting Rs 50,000 from a contractor. The official said that the bribe was sought to clear the contractor's payment for de-silting Sreeramsagar tank and Rangraosagar tank in V Madugula section of Visakhapatnam. Prakash's assistant, N Prasad, was also arrested during the trap which laid following a complaint, the ACB official said. A case had been registered and further investigations were underway, he said.
Former Bihar chief minister Jagannath Mishra, who was convicted along with RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, in a fodder scam case last month, surrendered today before a special CBI court here to serve the jail term awarded to him. The three-time chief minister was not present in the court on January 24 when he, Prasad and 48 others were convicted because of a death in his family. Special CBI judge S S Prasad awarded both the former chief ministers five years' rigorous imprisonment in connection with the case involving fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 37.62 crore from the Chaibasa Treasury in early 1990s. This is the second fodder scam case in which Mishra was convicted. In 2013, he was convicted in the first case along with Prasad. However, On December 23 last year, when the RJD boss was convicted in a third fodder scam case, Mishra was acquitted. After his surrender, Mishra was taken to Birsa Munda Central Jail here.
The Supreme Court, hearing a plea on honour killings, today refused to take note of the recent killing of a photographer by the family members of his girlfriend in Delhi. Twenty-three-year-old Ankit Saxena was stabbed to death by the family members of his girlfriend in west Delhi's Khyala area on February 1. "Madam, please. This matter has not travelled to this court," a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said when activist and author Madhu Kishwar raised the matter during the hearing. Kishwar said that such types of offences were "hate crimes" and needed to be dealt with sternly. The court was hearing a PIL filed by NGO Shakti Vahini in 2010, seeking that the central and state governments be directed to take measures for preventing and controlling honour crimes. The West Bengal CID today issued notices to former IPS Bharati Ghosh to appear before the investigating officer (IO) in connection with her alleged involvement in misconduct and extortion from civilians, a senior official of the department said. Notices have been sent to three residences in the city reportedly belonging to Ghosh by the state CID asking her to appear before the IO within three days in connection with their probe into the case, the IPS officer told PTI. "During earlier raids, we could not open some rooms at the three residences in the city. We suspect that there are some documents inside these rooms which have some links to the case. We have asked Ghosh to appear before the IO to clarify," he said. The CID last week had raided the residences of Ghosh and two other police officers in connection with the case. A 23-year-old man has been arrested and five Indian softshell turtles recovered from his possession which he had allegedly bought from west Delhi's Inderpuri, police said today. The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, under which the species has been termed endangered, they said. The accused, Aman, a resident of Madangir, accompanied by two of his friends was allegedly transporting the turtles from Inderpuri to his house, the police said. The trio had stopped at Ridge on February 3. A motorcycle patrol team saw the trio seating in the car and approached them, they said. A five-member team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today reached here for investigating into the suicide of the allegedly gang-raped minor schoolgirl of Kunduli. "The entire incident from the alleged rape to her suicide will be investigated. All documents, including medical reports and the nature of treatment given to the victim, will be examined," said Rabi Singh, a deputy superintendent of police rank officer who is leading the NHRC team. Any person who wants to share any information related to the incident with the team would be welcomed, he said. Vigilance sleuths today arrested a police officer on graft charges after catching him red-handed while taking bribe, an officer said. The accused has been identified as Sachidananda Samantray, Officer-in-Charge (OIC), Nuagaon Police Station in Nayagarh district. "He was caught red-handed by the officers of Vigilance, Bhubaneswar Division, for demanding and accepting illegal gratification of Rs 2,500 from Jugal Barada of village Ekatala under Nayagarh Sadar police station area," a vigilance officer said. Barada, owner of Subhalaxmi Restaurant, was allegedly threatened by the OIC of cancellation of food license of his restaurant. He also threatened to submit prosecution report against him. Vigilance officials said the OIC Samantray searched the restaurant of Barada and found the food license to be valid till February 3, 2018. The Delhi High Court today criticised Arvind Kejriwal over the relevance of questions put to Arun Jaitley during his cross-examination in a defamation case, and said the Delhi Chief Minister was engaging in a "roving and fishing enquiry". The observation by Justice Manmohan came while declining Kejriwal's plea to summon the entire minutes of meetings of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) from 1999 to 2013 when Jaitley was at its head. The Supreme Court today pulled up the Centre for adopting a "callous approach" on the issue of installation of CCTVs in courts and tribunals for recording judicial proceedings and sought a status report on the work done on it till now. The apex court said it will first see the response of the pilot project of CCTV installations in trial courts and tribunals and then would look for the possibility in high courts and the Supreme Court. "You should not adopt a callous approach towards this issue. This is a serious issue. You file the status report of CCTV installations in tribunals by next date of hearing," a bench of Justices Adarsh Goel and U U Lalit said. The Sureme Court today dismissed an appeal by Hotel Leela Venture Ltd and asked it to pay Rs 258 crore to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) as royalty for possession of its property near Mumbai International Airport. A bench comprising Justices R F Nariman and Navin Sinha junked the appeal filed by Hotel Leela challenging an order of the division bench of the Delhi High Court. In a relief to the Maharashtra government, the Supreme Court today stayed the Bombay High Court order which had asked to "reconsider and revisit" the appointments of members to the managing committee of Shirdi's Shri Sai Baba Sansthan Trust. The Aurangabad bench of the high court, had last year passed the order in which it had refused to quash the July 28, 2016, of the state government's notification for the appointment of the members of the trust. The high court had, however, asked the state government to "revisit and reconsider" the appointments of members of the trust made under the notification. A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R Banumathi issued notice on a plea filed by the state government challenging the high court order of November 29, 2017, and sought the reply in three weeks. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today said it has attached assets worth over Rs 2.95 crore of Jharkhand gangster Akhilesh Singh and his wife in connection with a money laundering case against them. It said a provisional order for attachment of assets, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), was issued by the central probe agency and it includes both immovable and movable properties. The ED, in a statement, said it had registered a money laundering case against Singh and his wife Garima last year after taking cognisance of over 50 FIRs filed against them by the state police on charges of alleged extortion, murder, kidnapping among others. Singh was arrested last year after a special Jharkhand police team had an encounter with him in Gurgaon near here. He had also suffered bullet injuries on his legs in this encounter.
