Pak minor girl's suspected murderer remanded to police custody

An Anti-Terrorism Court in Pakistan today granted investigators a 14-day physical remand of a 23-year-old man who was arrested in the brutal rape and murder case of a minor girl in Kasur city in Punjab province. Imran Ali, who was arrested by police yesterday, was produced before Judge Sajjad Ahmed today. The suspect, whose face was covered when he arrived at the court, was surrounded by officials of Punjab Elite Police Force, Dawn reported. State prosecutor Abdul Rauf Wattoo had requested the court for a 15-day physical remand so that investigators could interrogate the suspect, believed to be a serial murderer and rapist, about his alleged involvement in other similar cases. Briefing the court, Wattoo said that police had learned that the suspect used to lure children by promising to buy them sweets, the paper said. Zainab murder accused placed in 14-day police remand

A special anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Wednesday placed Imran Ali Naqshbandi, the accused in the rape and murder case of Zainab, in 14-day police remand. Imran will be presented again before the court again on February 8.Judge Sajjad Ali allowed 14-day long physical remand to allow time police to match Imran's DNA with seven other victims, GEo TV reports.Imran has pleaded guilty in the case.Zainab was kidnapped from near her aunt's house in Kasur on January 4. French court to hear 1st trial linked to 2015 Paris attacks

The first trial related to the 2015 deadly Islamic State attacks on Paris was going ahead as planned Wednesday after one of the suspects was successful transferred to a Paris court amid a national protest by prison guards. Jawad Bendaoud was scheduled to appear in court later Wednesday for the much-awaited trial. He's accused of helping two of the attackers, including the suspected ringleader, hide from police when they were the most wanted men in France. There were fears Bendaoud could not attend the trial after guards protesting over prison working conditions blocked the entrance of the Fresnes prison, south of Paris, earlier today. Municipal contractor shot dead

Unknown assailants today shot dead a civic body contractor here for allegedly refusing to pay an extortion of Rs five lakh they had demanded earlier, police said. Jagvir, the 47-year-old contractor working with the Municipal Board of Sikandrabad, was on his way to Sikandrabad town from his village Prangarh under Sikandrabad police station when the incident took place. According to the uncle of the deceased, the assailants allegedly fired six shots on Jagvir, killing him on the spot, barely 100 meters from his house. The deceased had received an extortion call for Rs five lakh and the matter was reported to the police. Bulandshahr SSP Muniraj G, who reached the spot, claimed that the matter is being probed and will be solved soon.

Two Maoists awarded life sentence for massacre of six

A court here today awarded life sentence to two Maoists in connection with the killing of six persons at a village in the district seven years ago. Additional District Judge Purushottam Mishra convicted Ravindra Yadav and Musharu Yadav for the massacre that took place in Kareli village on July 02, 2011. The court, however, acquitted three other accused in the case - Dhirendra Yadav, Rakesh Yadav and Rajram Yadav - on account of lack of evidence. Kareli village was attacked by a group of around 80 armed members of Communist Party of India (Maoist) who shot dead six villagers and abducted nearly a dozen others. The abductees were, later, released by the Maoists following a police operation. An FIR was lodged at the Dharhara police station against 80 persons, out of whom five were arrested while the remaining are yet to be traced.

Drug peddler held in Punjab

A man was arrested on charges of drug peddling here today and 100 gram intoxicating powder, 90 capsules and 70 intoxicating tablets were seized from his possession, a police officer said. The accused was identified as Vishal alias Shaili, a resident of local Mehligate, said Sadar SHO Lakhvir Singh. Shaili was arrested yesterday during a checkpost ('naka') on national highway 1 where police had laid a trap based on a tip off, the SHO said. Singh said the accused was arrested under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.

HC seeks govt's reply on plea for women entry in Navy branches

A plea seeking entry of women candidates in certain branches of the Indian Navy University, where admission of females is barred, today led the Delhi High Court to seek the responses of the Centre and the Defence Ministry. The PIL alleged institutional discrimination by the government and sought a direction to it to elaborate the steps taken to permit the entry of women on par with male candidates. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Centre and Ministry of Defence (Navy) on the plea and asked them to file their responses by May 15, the next date of hearing. During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain said the government was not averse to this petition, not treating it as an adversarial litigation and was working on it. Court asks ED to provide documents to Qureshi in PMLA case

A special court today asked the Enforcement Directorate to hand over certain documents to controversial meat exporter Moin Qureshi, accused in a money laundering case. Special judge Arun Bharadwaj directed the agency to hand over various papers it has filed along with the charge sheet to Qureshi, who granted bail in the case on December 12 last year. Special public prosecutor N K Matta, appearing for the ED, informed the court that all documents will be handed over as per law. However, he said that certain papers, whose supply to the accused might hamper the ongoing investigation, should not be given to Qureshi. The court posted the matter for further hearing on January 27. Qureshi was arrested on August 25 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). JNU violence: SC rejects plea for SIT probe, contempt action

The Supreme Court today dismissed a plea seeking an SIT probe into the February 2016 violence inside a trial court here during which former JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and others were assaulted, saying it would not "flog a dead horse back to life". A bench comprising Justices Ranjan Gogoi and R Banumathi did not accept the contentions advocating contempt action against the police officials and others for the incident which was described as "ghastly action" by the petitioner. "What ghastly action," the bench asked advocate Prashant Bhushan, who appeared for petitioner and advocate Kamini Jaiswal. Bhushan referred to the February 15 and 17, 2016 incidents of attacks on Kanhaiya, scribes, students, JNU teachers and defence lawyers inside the Patiala House district court premises here. NGT asks GDA 4to pay Rs 32.42L for water pipeline maintenance

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) to pay Rs 32.42 lakh to the municipal corporation for maintenance of drinking water pipeline in village Maharajpur in Ghaziabad. A bench headed by acting Chairperson Justice U D Salvi also directed the municipal corporation to take over the drinking water pipeline laid by Ghaziabad Development Authority in the village within two weeks. HC asks police to inquire into Mankhurd 'custodial death'

The Bombay High Court directed the Mumbai commissioner of police today to initiate an inquiry into the alleged custodial death of a 29-year-old man here. The body of Deepak Jadhav was found hanging inside the Mankhurd police station in August 2015. Claiming that it was a case of suicide, police neither registered an FIR nor got a judicial magistrate to inquire into the case, though the same is mandatory under the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). A bench of Justices B R Gavai and B P Colabawalla, however, took a strong exception to these "lapses in law", and directed that the police inquiry be conducted by an officer not below the ranks of inspector general of police (IGP). As per the plea filed by Deepa Jadhav, the wife of the deceased, the incident had occurred in August 2015. UP: Guards at DM office beat up woman complainant

Police guards at the district magistrate's office allegedly misbehaved and beat up a woman complainant. The woman, Anarkali, aged around 50, had visited the district magistrate's office yesterday to complain against her husband, saying that he used to torture her. As she reached office to meet district magistrate Sarika Mohan, the guards on duty, including some female constables, allegedly asked her to leave but when Anarkali resisted, she was allegedly thrashed and forcefully dumped in police jeep. A purported video clip of the entire episode has gone viral on social media. When contacted, the district magistrate said she was not aware of the incident, but promised action against the police guards after investigation.

Cops thrash truck driver, helper in full public glare

Two UP policemen allegedly beat up a truck driver and his helper in full public glare near Virahna crossing in Sikandra, prompting the district police chief to suspend one of the officials. Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Dehat) Ratankant Pandey said on the basis of prima facie inquiry, two policemen, a constable and a homeguard, were found guilty of thrashing truck driver Sunil Singh of Sikandara and helper Sunil Kumar of Ghatampur. Constable Rajveer Singh was placed under suspension, the Pandey said. Sikandra station house officer Bhupendra Singh Rathi said the truck was on its way to Sikandara when it collided with a bike. The truck driver and helper had an argument with two youngsters riding the bike and soon some policemen, including constable Rajveer Singh and homeguard Afsar Singh reached the spot and nabbed the truck driver and his helper. The truck involved in the incident was seized, but no action was taken against the driver and helper and they were let off .
