The customs department's air intelligence unit has seized over 2.5 kg of gold worth over Rs 90 lakh and arrested two persons in five different incidents at the airport here. Yesterday, acting on a tip-off the officials intercepted 26-year-old Cheriya Parambath Ansar, who arrived here from Dubai, and seized 829 grams of gold worth Rs 25 lakh from him. The accused was arrested, an official release said. The same day, officials intercepted two women Ummal Bajria (69) and Halima Nachiya (47) who arrived from Dubai and seized 492 grams of gold, worth Rs 28 lakh, concealed under their burkha, it said. Customs department sleuths seized 333.8 grams of gold worth Rs 10 lakh from Sivaiah Kokkanti (44) who arrived from Kuwait, while 379 grams of yellow metal worth Rs 11.4 lakh was seized from Barakathnisa Shamsudeen who arrived from Bangkok. Crime Branch officials today visited the "cold firecracker" unit in Bawana where 17 people were killed in a massive blaze on Saturday. The case was yesterday transferred to the Crime Branch from the district police as it "required extensive investigation and a proper detailed follow-ups". Of the 17 killed in the fire, 10 were women. Till yesterday, 14 of the deceased had been identified. Today, another body was identified as Avinash (18). Two bodies, including that of a woman, are yet to be identified. A woman was allegedly sexually assaulted while her husband and brother-law-in were being held at gun-point at Sector-56 here, following which four persons were arrested, the police said today. The husband of an Additional Superintendent of Police today filed a case of adultery against a police inspector alleging that the latter was having an extra-marital relationship with the complainant's wife. Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishwa Prasad said that a complaint had been received from Surender Reddy alleging that inspector Mallikharjun Reddy of Nagarkurnool police was having an extra-marital relationship with the former's wife who is an ASP with the Anti-Corruption Bureau. "We received a complaint and accordingly, we have registered a case against Mallikharjun Reddy and information has been sent to the SP of Nagarkurnool for a departmental inquiry. Information will also be sent to the Director General of the ACB for departmental action," the police official told PTI. A case under sections 447 (criminal trespass) and 497 (adultery) of the IPC was filed against Mallikharjun Reddy, he informed.
The owner of Mumbai's Kamala Mills compound, Ramesh Gowani, was arrested today in connection with a pub fire, which claimed 14 lives on December 29 last year, police said. Gowani, who was travelling in a car, was intercepted at suburban Chembur by a team of the N M Joshi Marg police station, a senior police official said. "We have arrested Gowani under IPC section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder)," S Jaykumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Central Region) told PTI. The Madras High Court has dismissed a plea seeking the registration of an FIR in the alleged mysterious death of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in 2016. Rejecting the revision petition against a lower court order which had dismissed the prayer, Justice M V Muralidaran directed the petitioner to approach the one-man inquiry commission headed by retired judge A Arumugasamy, probing the hospitalisation and subsequent death of Jayalalithaa in December 2016. Advocate A K Velan had filed the petition challenging the order of the 14th metropolitan magistrate on June 27 last year, dismissing his petition seeking a direction to the city police to register an FIR in the alleged mysterious death of Jayalalithaa. A person was killed and five others injured in an explosion today at an Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) plant in Haryana's Panipat district, police said. The blast took place in the 'Naphtha Cracker' plant of the oil major at around 2:30 PM, they said. "One contractual employee of the IOCL died in the explosion," Panipat Superintendent of Police Rahul Sharma said over phone. Of the five injured, the condition of two has been stated as critical, he said The SP said technical teams were probing the incident and reasons that led to the blast could be clear by tomorrow. The body of the deceased has been kept in the civil hospital. The deceased could be around 38-40 years, police said.
A special police officer (SPO), who last week fled his post along with his service rifle -- an AK 47, was today arrested in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. The weapon has also been seized, a senior police officer said. Mohammad Yaseen (22), hailing from Shishnan village and posted at Marwah police station, had fled along with the AK-47 rifle on Friday night. "The SPO was arrested in a joint operation by police and the Rashtriya Rifles this evening," Deputy Inspector General of Police, Doda-Kishwar-Ramban range, Basant Kumar Rath told PTI. Yaseen was arrested from an area within two kms of the police station and the weapon also recovered, Rath said. "We are questioning him to find out the motive behind his action," the officer said.

Haryana DGP B S Sandhu today said that recruitment for the post of 4,500 men and 1,000 women police personnel will begin next month. He also said that more than 350 sub-inspectors will also be recruited. "They will be recruited on merit basis and there will be no interview," an official release quoted the Director General of Police (DGP) as saying. Counsellors will be appointed in 18 schools run by the police department to generate awareness about crime against children, he said. The DGP said that a campaign 'Durga Shakti' will be launched in to stop crime against women in the state. "Under the campaign, five woman SPOs each will be recruited for every village and ward to keep vigil on crimes against women. They will directly report to the district head of police," he said. A court here today sentenced a 26-year-old man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for abducting and raping a minor girl. District Judge S S Gulhane also slapped a fine of Rs 11,000 on Mohammad Habibulla alias Barrister Karamali Shaikh. The victim and the convict hailed from Fulpur. Habibulla, a rickshaw driver, used to take the girl in his auto to school when she was 15, Assistant Public Prosecutor Sunil Sawant told the court. "They developed an illicit relationship and the girl gave birth to a child in 2011," he said. Her parents allowed Habibulla to take the new born and they relocated to Palghar district along with their daughter, Sawant said. Habibulla followed them and kidnapped the girl on December 23, 2013, and took her to Fulpur, and raped her, he said. Police arrested Habibulla from Fulpur and rescued the girl, the court was informed. The case was heard in a Palghar court as the convict had abducted the girl from here.
