BJP MLA's son held for threatening to kill Cong leader in MP

A BJP MLA's son was Thursday arrested for allegedly threatening to kill a Congress leader in Harda in Madhya Pradesh, police said. Sudeep Patel (34) was arrested in a two-month-old case of threatening Congress leader Sukhram Bamne, Harda Superintendent of Police Bhagwat Singh Birde said. Sudeep, an elected representative of Khirkiya Janpad Panchayat, is the son of sitting BJP MLA from Harda, Kamal Patel. In his complaint, Bamne had said that on April 28 this year, Patel had issued a death threat to him over phone, Sub Divisional Officer of Police (SDOP) Mahendra Kumar Malviya said. Bamne had alleged that Patel threatened to kill him over his Facebook post, which claimed that the farm loan of Kamal Patel's wife has been waived under the state government's scheme. Based on the complaint, Patel was booked under relevant sections of the IPC and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act on April 28. Putin says MH17 probe shows 'no proof' of Russia's guilt

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday the international community had failed to provide any evidence that Moscow was behind the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in which 298 people died. "What we've seen as evidence of Russia's guilt absolutely does not suit us. We believe that there is no proof there," Putin told reporters. HC bench recuses itself from hearing PIL against conversion of Jayalalithaa house into memorial

A division bench of the Madras High Court Thursday recused itself from hearing a PIL against converting the residence of late Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa here into a memorial. It took the decision saying that one of its members, Justice Subramonium Prasad, had appeared for Jayalalithaa in a case when he was a lawyer. The bench, which also included Justice S Manikumar, directed that the matter be posted before some other bench. Indian man in Singapore jailed for defaulting on compulsory National Service for 5 yrs

An Indian national, who is a permanent resident of Singapore, was on Thursday sentenced to 10 weeks in jail by a court for defaulting on his compulsory National Service (NS) for more than five years and remaining outside the country without valid exit permit. The National Service (NS) is compulsory for male Singapore citizens and permanent residents (PRs) who are above 18 years of age. Thirumal Pavithran, 25, failed to register on time for the NS and defaulted on his NS obligations while completing his secondary and university education in India for over five years. The total period of time that he spent outside Singapore was five years, seven months and 16 days. Thirumal, who finished serving NS last month, pleaded guilty to four charges under the Enlistment Act, the Channel News Asia reported. Man held for repeatedly raping, impregnating girl

A man was Thursday arrested for allegedly repeatedly raping and impregnating a 13-year old girl here, police said. The accused was identified as Shivraj Yadav (45), a vendor, police said. The incident came to light after the girl's family members found that she was pregnant, T T Nagar Police Station in-charge Virendra Chouhan said. The accused, who lived in the neighbourhood, had first sexually assaulted the minor in December last year and threatened her not to tell about it to anyone. After that, he raped the victim on multiple occasions, the officer said. Based on the complaint of her family members, a case was registered against the accused under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

HC tasks TN govt to slap criminal cases against cops taking bribe

Expressing serious concern over non-initiation of criminal action against police personnel who took bribe, the Madras High Court on Thursday directed the authorities to slap cases under anti-graft law to rein them in. Rejecting the plea of a police inspector M Ramaswamy, who wanted a minor punishment of "censure" against him for taking bribe to be quashed, Justice S M Subramaniam slammed the insensitiveness of higher officials towards demand and acceptance of bribe. The inspector had allegedly taken bribe, known as "mamool" in local parlance, and the charge was proven. Mamool also meant that it was periodical. The disciplinary authority imposed a punishment of reduction in time scale of pay by one stage for one year. It would have a bearing on future increment also for a year, as per the punishment. When the inspector appealed to the Additional Director General of Police (Law and order), the punishment was reduced to censure. The petitioner later approached the court seeking quashing .

Smuggled goods from Nepal seized in Siliguri

Contraband from Nepal has been seized and four smugglers have been arrested in this regard here on Thursday.The officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had seized 5500 kilograms of black pepper and 2200 kilograms of dried peas worth Rs50 lakh and Rs24 lakh, respectively.The illicit goods were packed and stored in 1000 bags and found in three trucks.The alleged perpetrators were taken to Siliguri court today where further judiciary procedures will take place on the alleged smugglers.

Prisoner escapes from Odisha jail

A prisoner serving life sentence in a murder case escaped from a jail in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district on Thursday, police said. Bhagaban Tudu, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2016, escaped while working in the kitchen garden of the sub-jail in Karanjia. The kitchen garden is located beyond the walls of the jail and Tudu used to work there regularly, police said. The sub-jail authorities have filed an FIR.

BJP's internal fact finding panel gives clean chit to party leaders in alleged Leh bribery case

The internal fact finding commission of the BJP Thursday released its report, giving clean chit to state party president Ravinder Raina and two other senior leaders in the alleged case of offering bribes to journalists in Leh to influence the recently held parliamentary polls in Ladakh. The state unit of the Congress, however, out rightly rejected the probe and termed it as an attempt by the saffron party to influence the police investigation. "The BJP leaders have not done anything wrong and that whatever has been levelled against them is totally false and baseless," the three-member commission headed by Justice (retd) G D Sharma said in its report, released by the party, here. Rajasthan: Man commits suicide after killing wife, daughters

A 30-year-old man allegedly hanged himself after killing his wife and two minor daughters in Rajasthan's Sirohi due to financial crisis, police said Thursday. On late Wednesday night, Prabhu Bheel allegedly killed his wife Geeta (25) and three-year-old daughter Rama with a sword and strangled his one-and-a-half-year old daughter Jamu. He then hanged himself at his home in Isra village, Saroopganj Police Station in-charge Shivraj Singh said. The man was not employed for the last several months because of his ill health and the family was facing an extreme financial crunch, Singh said. The bodies have been handed over to the family members after post-mortem and the last rites were performed on Thursday, he said.

File affidavit stating no report given to MHA to review 2006 Mumbai blasts evidence: CIC to IB

The Central Information Commission (CIC) has directed the Intelligence Bureau (IB) to file an affidavit stating that it did not submit any report to the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2009 seeking review of evidence against 2006 Mumbai train blasts accused. The CIC was deciding the plea of Ehtesham Qutubuddin Siddiqui who has been convicted in the blasts and is on death row. Seven RDX bombs had exploded in the first class coaches of many suburban trains in Mumbai on July 11, 2006, killing 188 people and injuring 829. The charge sheet filed by Anti-Terrorism Squad in November 2006 had named 30 accused, including 17 absconders. A special court had convicted 12, mostly members of banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), on September 30, 2015, and acquitted one. Among the 12, five were sentenced to death, while the others were awarded life imprisonment. Worker allegedly rapes 9-year-old girl

: A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a worker in an under-constructionbuilding here Thursday, police said. The 22-year-old accused took the girl playing near her hut to the building site and allegedly raped her, the police said based on a complaint lodged by her parents. The girl's mother noticed blood stains on her clothes after she returned home and enquired about the matter. It was then the minor narrated the incident, an investigating official said. The girl has been put under medical examination and a hunt launched for the accused, the official said adding that the girl's parents had been working here as construction workers for the past four months. Two ex-IL&FS executives sent to ED custody till June 25

Two former IL&FS executives arrested by the Enforcement Directorate for their alleged roles money laundering for the crisis-hit lending firm, were Thursday remanded to six-day custody of the central agency. IL&FS former joint managing director Arun K Saha and its transportation network MD K Ramchand were remanded in ED's custody by a special PMLA court till June 25. The two were arrested late Wednesday and produced before Judge P P Rajvaidya of the special court set up under Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The duo's were the first arrests in the case of financial irregularity by IL&FS. The central agency had lodged a money laundering case against the firm in February this year and had raided homes and offices of a number of its former executives twice to gather additional evidence. Attempt to sexually assault woman passenger, driver arrested

The driver of a Thiruvanathapuram-bound interstate private bus from Mangaluru was arrested for allegedly misbehaving with a woman passenger Thursday, police said. The incident came to light after the woman, hailing from Tamil Nadu, raised an alarm and the passengers informed police. The police arrested the accused, Johnson Joseph and seized the bus. Joseph was in an inebriated state, police said. The woman alleged that the accused had touched her inappropriately while she was asleep at 2 am in the bus. Delhi: Woman beaten to death by relative, husband injured

A 23-year-old woman was killed and her husband severely injured in southeast Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin area after they were allegedly beaten up by a relative who suspected that he had lost his job because of the couple, police said Thursday. However, the accused, Rati Ram, told police that he attacked Sita and her husband, Mangal (25), as he was angry after he got an electric shock from a wire dangling from the gate of their house. UP: Man stops to urinate on road, 2 flee with his motorcycle

Stopping by to urinate along a roadside in Greater Noida cost a man his motorcycle Thursday as two unidentified men fled with his two-wheeler while he took the nature's call, police said. The incident took place around 2.30 pm, when Aakash, around 35, was on his way to the industrial area in Greater Noida for work and the scooter-borne duo struck his motorcycle, they said. Pak court rejects Sharif's plea for bail on medical grounds

A Pakistani court on Thursday turned down a plea by jailed prime minister Nawaz Sharif to suspend his sentence in a corruption case and grant him bail on medical grounds. Sharif has been serving a seven-year prison term at the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore since December 24, 2018 when an accountability court convicted him in the Al-Azizia steel mills corruption case filed in the wake of the apex court's July 28, 2017 order in Panama Papers case.
