Noida police launch initiative to review dragging cases

In a new initiative to expedite the resolution of cases dragging for long, Noida police started a dedicated programme Friday to review sensitive matters once a week in the presence of the complainant and the investigating officials. The "Vaadi Diwas" (or the plaintiff's day) will be organised every week in urban police stations on Wednesdays and in rural areas on Fridays, said Senior Superintendent of Police, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Vaibhav Krishna. He said cases of murder, loot (including snatching, cash or jewellery loot, auto lifting) and theft of more than Rs 5 lakh will be heard on priority basis. Cases of crime against women in which probe is underway for more than three months will also be reviewed during "Vaadi Diwas", the SSP, who has mooted the concept at the district level, told reporters. Three get life term for killing man

A court here has sentenced three men to life imprisonment for murdering a man about three years ago. District Sessions Judge Sanjay Kumar Pachori also imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh each on Sunil alias Pappu and Sunder and Rs 20,000 on Tasleem after holding them guilty under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal code. The court has directed that 95 per cent of the total amount should be paid to the family of the deceased. According to district government counsel Dushyant Tyagi and assistant district counsel Yogesh Sharma, Amarpal was strangled to death by Sunil, Sunder and Tasleem over an old enmity in Sikanderpur village under Bhopa police station in the district on May 11, 2016. A complaint was filed by the deceased's brother Ompal against the three, they said.

Former HP minister Chaudhary Vidyasagar dies

Former Himachal Pradesh minister and senior BJP leader Chaudhary Vidyasagar passed away at the age of 84 in Kangra near Dharamshala, a family member said. He was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments for a few days and died on Thursday night at his home in Zamanabad area, the family member said. An OBC leader in the region, Vidyasagar was a four-time MLA from Kangra assembly constituency and worked as a minister in the state governments led by Shanta Kumar and Prem Kumar Dhumal. Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Jai Ram Thakur, ex-CM Dhumal and Shanta Kumar have deeply mourned his death.

Ensure smooth probe of rationalists' killings: HC to political parties

The Bombay High Court Friday said political parties and their bosses should show "maturity" and ensure that there are no obstacles in the probe into the killings of rationalists Narendra Dabhoklar and Govind Pansare. "Voice of dissent" must not be muffled, a division bench headed by Justice S C Dharmadhikari said while hearing petitions filed by family members of Dabholkar and Pansare demanding an HC-monitored probe. Dabholkar, a well-known anti-superstition activist, was shot dead on August 20, 2013 in Pune. Pansare, CPI leader and rationalist, was shot on February 16, 2015 near his house in Kolhapur in western Maharashtra. He died four days later. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of state police are probing the killings of Dabholkar and Pansare, respectively. Asaram's son Narayan Sai held guilty in rape case

A sessions court here Friday convicted Narayan Sai, son of jailed self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, in a rape case filed against him by a former woman devotee in 2013. The sentence will be pronounced on April 30. Besides Sai (47), who is lodged at Lajpore Jail here since 2013, the court held four of his aides, including two women, guilty of various offences. Sai was convicted under IPC sections 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural offences), 323 (assault), 506-2 (criminal intimidation) and 120-B (conspiracy). Of the 11 accused, six were acquitted. Additional Sessions Judge P S Gadhvi will pronounce the quantum of punishment on April 30. The minimum punishment for rape is 10 years in jail, while the maximum punishment is life imprisonment. Man gets 7 years RI for raping tribal girl

A court here has sentenced a 26-year-old man to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a tribal girl in 2016. Special court judge P P Jadhav held Ashirwad Vishnu Patil guilty under Indian Penal Code section 376 (rape) and relevant provisions the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and awarded the sentence on Monday. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him. "The victim is a poor tribal girl. She delivered a child out of rape. She has not been given compensation under any government scheme. "Under such circumstances, this is a fit case to be recommended for compensation," the court said in its judgment. Prosecutor Vivek Kadu told the court that Patil and the girl were residents of the same village in Bhiwandi. Man arrested for duping people on pretext of providing jobs in foreign countries

A man was arrested here Friday for allegedly cheating people on the pretext of providing them jobs in foreign countries, police said. Police in Budgam district had received a complaint against a job consultancy firm -- Gulf HR Solutions, Hyderpora -- that its owner is cheating people on the pretext of providing them jobs in foreign countries, a police spokesman said. While investigating the case, police learnt that the proprietor of Gulf HR consultancy has duped many unemployed youth by providing them fake visas, fake appointment orders and fake air tickets and illegally grabbed a huge chunk of money from each one of them, he said. "Acting on a complaint, police arrested a man, identified as Adil Yousuf Sheikh, a resident of Nowpora in the Khayam area of the city," the spokesman said. Rohit Tiwari murder: Apoorva Tiwari sent to 14-day judicial custody

A Delhi court on Friday sent Apoorva Tiwari, wife of late Congress leader ND Tiwari's son Rohit Shekhar Tiwari, to judicial custody for 14 days.Apoorva was granted judicial custody by Delhi's Saket Court in connection with the murder of her husband recently.Through her lawyer, Apoorva asked for a separate cell, citing threat to her life. East Delhi AAP candidate Atishi files criminal complaint against Gautam Gambhir

Rohit Shekhar Tiwari murder: Delhi court sends his wife Apoorva to 14-day judicial custody

Rohit Shekhar Tiwari's wife Apoorva Shukla, arrested in connection with his murder, was sent to 14-days judicial custody by a Delhi court on Friday. Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Deepak Sherawat sent Shukla to jail after the police informed the court that her custodial interrogation was not required.
