Delhi court summons Ramesh on May 9 in Doval defamation case, exempts him for Thursday

A Delhi court granted exemption to Congress leader Jairam Ramesh from personal appearance on Thursday but directed him to be present before it on May 9 in a defamation case filed against him by Vivek Doval, son NSA Ajit Doval. "Accused no 1 Jairam Ramesh has filed exemption application through his counsel Omar Hoda. Considering the grounds mentioned in the application, the same is allowed only for today," the court said. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal also granted bail to The Caravan's editor-in-chief and its reporter, who appeared before the court after they were summoned as accused in the case. "Since the offence of defamation under section 500 IPC is bailable in nature, both the accused are admitted on bail on furnishing personal bond and surety bond in the sum of Rs 20,000 each. ED files supplementary charge sheet against O P Chautala

The Enforcement Directorate Thursday filed a supplementary charge sheet against former Haryana chief minister O P Chautala in connection with a money laundering case. The charge sheet was filed before special judge Kamini Lau who posted the matter for consideration on May 16. The CBI had on March 26, 2010 named Chautala in a charge sheet, indicting him for allegedly possessing assets worth Rs 6.09 crore. The ED had filed a separate case based on the CBI's FIR.

1984 riots: HC seeks SIT reply on convict's sentence suspension plea on medical ground

The Delhi High Court Thursday sought SIT's response on a plea by a convict, who was awarded life term in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, who has interim suspension of his sentence on medical ground. It asked the jail superintendent to give a report on the convict Naresh Sehrawat's medical condition. It asked the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the state to respond to the convict's plea in which he claimed that his liver was 90 per cent damaged and sought interim suspension of the sentence. The SIT has been asked to verify the documents given by Sehrawat in support of his medical condition. The court listed the matter for further hearing on May 1. A trial court had awarded life term to Sherawat in a case related to the killing of two men in New Delhi during the 1984 riots -- the first convictions in the cases reopened by the SIT. 3 electrocuted to death in Rajasthan's Bikaner

Three people, including a father-son duo, were Thursday electrocuted to death upon coming in contact with a live wire in a village here, police said. The incident occurred in Moondsar village when the victims were sowing seeds in a farm land, Napasar police station in-charge Suman Parihar said. Chain Ram (45) and Hadmanaram Jat (42) came in contact with the live wire first, while the latter's son, Gajendra, was electrocuted when he attempted to save them, Parihar said. All three were declared brought dead by the doctors at the PBM Hospital and the bodies were handed over to the family members after postmortem, he added.

An Assistant Public Prosecutor was arrested here by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly taking Rs 15,000 bribe for extending favours. K Prasanna Lakshmi, Assistant Public Prosecutor of XIV Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Court was caught red-handed by the ACB officials at her office, when she demanded and accepted the bribe of Rs 15,000 from the complainant for extending official favour, an ACB release said here. The bribe amount was recovered from the accused and she was arrested, it said.

Nirav Modi to appear for remand hearing via videolink from jail on Friday

Fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi, undergoing extradition proceedings in the UK in the USD 1-billion Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud and money laundering case, is set to appear before a London court for a remand hearing on Friday. The 48-year-old, who has been behind bars at Wandsworth prison in south-west London since his arrest last month, is set to be produced before a judge at Westminster Magistrates' Court via videolink from the jail. The hearing follows his bail being rejected by Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot on March 29 on the grounds that there was a "substantial risk he would fail to surrender". "This is a case of substantial fraud, with loss to a bank in India of between USD 1-2 billion. I am not persuaded that the conditional bail sought will meet the concerns of the government of India in this case," Judge Arbuthnot had noted in her ruling. NGT directs EDMC not to dump solid waste near school in Shahdara

The National Green Tribunal has directed the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) not to dump solid waste or raise any structure near a school in Shahdara. A bench headed by Justice Raghuvendra S Rathore also directed the Delhi Development Authority to provide land for relocating auto workshop which is functioning in densely populated residential area of Jhilmil colony. "However, it is made clear that the concerning authority for the purpose of giving the land to EDMC may take immediate steps to complete the procedural formalities. Needless to say that the land which is to be given to EDMC for construction of auto workshop, would be with consideration and in accordance to the prevailing laws," the bench said. The tribunal also directed the EDMC to pay Rs 50,000 to advocate Sanjay Upadhyay, who was appointed as amicus curiae in the case. 3 held for robbing people in southwest Delhi

Three men were arrested for allegedly robbing people in southwest district's Delhi Cantt area, police said Thursday. The accused were identified as Rahul Kashyap (25), Surender (20), residents of Badayun district in Uttar Pradesh and Ranjeet (27), a resident of Darbhanga district in Bihar, they said. According to Devender Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southwest), on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday near Dhaula Kuan flyover, police noticed two persons raising alarm for help and three men running towards railway tracks near Dhaula Kuan. However, one of the accused was arrested and later identified as Kashyap, while two of his accomplices managed to escape. Later, Surender was arrested from the jungle near railway line and Ranjeet from Delhi Cantt area, police said. CBI calls TDP leader YS Chowdary for questioning in bank fraud case

The CBI has called former Union minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader YS Chowdary for questioning in a bank fraud case, officials said Thursday. He has been asked to appear on Friday at the agency's Bengaluru office, they said. The CBI had registered a case against electrical equipment manufacturer Best and Crompton Engineering Projects Limited for allegedly cheating Andhra Bank to the tune of Rs 71 crore in 2017. In its FIR against the Chennai-based company and its five directors, including Managing Director Kakulamarri Srinivas Kalyan Rao, the CBI has slapped charges under Indian Penal Code sections pertaining to criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery among others.

BJP vice president Shivraj Singh Chouhan Thursday claimed that the collector of Chhindwara, the home district of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, denied permission to land for a helicopter carrying him. A Delhi Court Thursday reserved order on a plea by Christian Michel, alleged middleman arrested in the AgustaWestland VVIP chopper case, which accused the Enforcement Directorate of politicising the case by leaking the charge sheet to the media. Elderly man dies after police take his grandson into custody

A 70-year-old man died apparently due to shock after his minor grandson was taken into custody by police in connection with a stone pelting incident in Osmanabad district of Maharashtra, an official said Thursday. Dattu Ganpati More died immediately after police apprehended his grandson from their house in Telmod village in Umarga taluka late on Wednesday night, the official said. More's grandson was held as part of the operation launched to catch those allegedly involved in pelting stones at a police vehicle, he added. British legal team takes Christian Michel case to UN alleging 'torture' by India

Manhunt launched to nab absconding BJP candidate in Odisha

A manhunt has been launched to nab Om Prakash Mishra, the BJP candidate for Satyabadi assembly constituency, who along with his supporters allegedly destroyed EVMs and tore poll documents in a booth during the third phase of polling in Odisha on April 23, police said. "The BJP candidate is absconding since then," Puri Superintendent of Police, Umashankar Dash, told reporters. Three police teams have raided Mishra's residence at Hansapal in Bhubaneswar but could not find him, the SP said. The police action came on the basis of a complaint lodged by the Presiding Officer, Shivaram Mohapatra.
