In a major development, the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered a probe by a former judge of the apex court Justice A K Patnaik into allegations about conspiracy against Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi who has been accused of sexual harassment by a woman.
The Supreme Court Thursday constituted a one-man panel of former apex court judge Justice A K Patnaik to hold inquiry into the allegations of larger conspiracy to frame Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogi and fixing of benches in the top court. The apex court asked the Directors of CBI and IB as also the Delhi Police Commissioner to cooperate with Justice (Retd) Patnaik as and when sought by him during the inquiry. The top court said however that the inquiry by will not deal with the allegations of sexual harassment against the CJI. It said the outcome of the inquiry will not affect the in-house committee which is dealing with the complaint against the CJI. The apex court said that on the completion of inquiry, Justice (Retd) Patnaik will file a report in a sealed cover before the court after which the matter will be heard again. A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in a forest in Central Assam's Hojai district, police said on Thursday. Three persons have been arrested in connection with the incident, a police officer said. The incident happened a month ago at Dighaljharuni village in Akashiganga reserve forest area, under the jurisdiction of Doboka police station, he said. The incident came to light after a video shot by one of the accused went viral on the social media, the police officer added. An FIR was lodged on Wednesday. The 16-year-old girl, according to the FIR, was raped by five men on March 25, when she was going to a relative's place with her brother-in-law, the Officer-in-charge (OC) of Doboka police station, N Bhuyan, said. The five accused forcibly dragged the girl into the forest and raped her, he said. One of the accused shot a video of the act and uploaded it on social media, he said. Justice N V Ramana, part of 3-member in-house inquiry panel set up to examine the allegations of sexual harassment against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, recused himself from it on Thursday. An apex court source said that Justice Ramana has opted himself out of the inquiry panel headed by Justice S A Bobde. The development comes a day after the former apex court woman employee, who levelled the allegations against the CJI, wrote a letter to the panel expressing reservation over the inclusion of Justice Ramana.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its order on the issue of setting up an inquiry committee to probe an advocate's claim that there was a "conspiracy" to frame Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi in a sexual harassment case.A special bench comprising Justices Arun Mishra, Rohinton Nariman and Deepak Gupta will pronounce its order later in the day.During the course of the hearing, advocate Utsav Bains, who made the claim about a conspiracy to frame Justice Gogoi, submitted an additional affidavit on the direction of the court.In his affidavit, Bains submitted that he cannot share the names of the "fixers" as "privileged communication under the Advocates Act" cannot be disclosed.Attorney General (AG) KK Venugopal said the claim of privilege under Section 126 of the Indian Evidence Act is not applicable to any communication between Bains and the alleged fixers.Venugopal said that a court can ask for any document relevant to a case.Supporting the Attorney General's argument, Supreme Court ...

A 25-year-old man was sentenced to 20-year rigourous imprisonment by a court here on Thursday for raping a three-and-a-half-year-old girl last year, police said. Ajay Rai alias Taxi, a resident of Bangali Basti of Kota city, was convicted by the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) court, special public prosecutor (SPP) Ritesh Mewara said. A fine of Rs 2.10 Lakh was also imposed on the convict, he added. The convict had on September 18, 2018 taken the sleeping minor girl to his home when her family members were at a temple and raped her, the SPP said. A case was registered under sections of the POCSO Act in Dadabari police station. The POCSO court termed the crime as a heinous one.
The Supreme Court Thursday directed the Election Commission to take action on a complaint by TMC candidate Mahua Moitra against BJP leader Mahadev Sarkar for allegedly making sexually coloured remarks. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi directed the EC to pass a reasoned order forthwith. Moitra has alleged that Nadia district BJP President Sarkar in the presence of party candidate Kalyan Chaubey made sexually coloured remarks against her on April 23. She said the poll panel has not taken any action against Sarkar. Moitra said less than 48 hours are remaining before the campaigning comes to an end for the polls in her Krishnanagar constituency of Nadia district in West Bengal and action should be taken immediately.
The Hyderabad Police rescued three toddlers and busted a notorious kidnapping gang.The accused were identified as Vakapalli Gangadhar Reddy, Potla Jyothi alias Fouziya, G.Prasad, Gadepe Sindhu alias Sindhu, S Aruna, Korra Munna and Peddi Laxmi.During the investigation, it was revealed that the accused resorted to kidnapping children in an attempt to mint money."All of them formed a group and started kidnapping minor boys and later sold these kids to needy couples who did not have children. A Delhi court Thursday granted exemption from personal appearance to Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and directed him to appear before it on May 9 in a defamation case filed against him by NSA Ajit Doval's son Vivek. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal also granted bail to The Caravan's editor-in-chief and its reporter, who appeared before the court after they were summoned as accused in the case. The court granted exemption to Ramesh after the Congress leader moved an application and sought exemption from appearing before it today. The Caravan had alleged in its article that Vivek Doval, "runs a hedge fund in the Cayman Islands" which is "an established tax haven". On January 30, Vivek had recorded his statement before the court, saying all the allegations levelled by the magazine and later repeated by Ramesh at a press conference were "baseless" and "false" and damaged his reputation in the eyes of family members and colleagues.

Prosecutors quickly appealed the court's decision, delaying his immediate release but public broadcaster NHK said he could walk out of his detention centre "as early as Thursday". A 30-year-old woman, who was found dead in a sugarcane field in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district two days ago, has been identified as Babita, police said Thursday. A case has been registered against her lover, Kapil Kumar, who is on the run. The woman was allegedly strangled to death by Kumar at Gadla village, Station House Officer M S Gill said. Actor Ken Watanabe is all set to play the lead in the Japanese remake of Harrison Ford's 1993 thriller "The Fugitive". The original, directed by Andrew Davis, was based on the 1960s television series of the same name. It featured Ford as the famed surgeon, Dr. Richard Kimble, who is sentenced to death after he is wrongly convicted of his wife's murder. The Japanese version, to be directed by Seiji Izumi, will be made into a special program for the country's network TV Asahi. It will be set in present-day Tokyo just before the opening of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, reported Variety. The story will follow Kazuki Kakurai (Watanabe), an elite surgeon, whose wife is murdered. A 33-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment by a Thane court in Maharashtra for raping a minor girl in 2015. District and special POCSO court judge S B Bahalkar on Wednesday pronounced the punishment to the accused, Shivmani Ramdulhar Jaiswar, who worked as a carpenter, and also imposed a fine of Rs 27,000 on him. According to the prosecution, the accused and the victim, then aged 10 years, were neighbours in the city's Manorama Nagar area and knew each other. On July 17, 2015, the accused went to the girl's house when she was alone and raped her. He threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed about the offence to anyone, the prosecution told the court. The girl later informed her mother, who lodged a police complaint following which the accused was arrested and booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 376(2)(i) (rape)and 506 (criminal intimidation), and provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Two women were allegedly raped here by a man, whose wife recorded the incident to blackmail the victims into trafficking, police said Thursday. According to a complaint, the women, aged 22-23, were held hostage in New Mandi area, where the accused, Sanjiv Lohan, raped them. His wife, Rita Lohan, made a video of the incident and blackmailed them, an officer said. The women alleged they were raped by other people after they were blackmailed with the video, the officer said. Both the accused have been arrested, the officer added.
