A woman, aged around 20, was allegedly gang-raped by 10-11 men near Issewal village in Ludhiana.The incident took place on February 9, but came to the fore on February 10 when the victim informed the police. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) VS Brar, the victim informed the police that she, along with her friend, were going in a car from Ludhiana city towards Issewal village on Saturday night when their car was stopped by two unknown men on a motorcycle.The men on bikes started throwing bricks on the car and then dragged them out. Those bike-borne men later called few more men and raped the woman, the police said."A woman complained that 10-11 people stopped her car while she was travelling with a friend and raped her. FIR has been registered and medical examination is being done, an investigation is underway," he said.The case is currently under investigation.

A 30-year-old man was sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment by a sessions court here on Monday for driving his bar dancer-girlfriend to commit suicide in suburban Khar in 2016. Additional sessions judge Surekha Patil convicted the accused Miraj Khan under sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapon), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 504 (breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code, and handed him the rigorous imprisonment. As per prosecution, Khan had a quarrel with the woman on March 19, 2016 on some issues, following which he attacked her and locked her inside her flat on the third floor of a building in the suburb. In a major relief to the Uttar Pradesh government, a division bench of the Allahabad High Court Monday quashed a single-judge bench order for a CBI probe into the process of appointment of 68,500 assistant basic teachers in the state. Earlier, the division bench passed an interim order on December 11, 2018, staying the single judge order of November 1. Allowing the special appeal filed by the state government against the single judge order, the division bench of Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Manish Mathur of the Lucknow bench observed that there was no material before the single judge to pass the order for a CBI inquiry into the matter. The division bench was of the view that it was improper on the part of the single judge to record finding of corruption without any inquiry into the recruitment process. A 17-year-old boy, facing trial in a rape case, died at a hospital here on Monday a week after being admitted for treatment of meningitis, an official said. According to Ajay Kumar, superintendent of the remand home situated in the Gaighat area of the city, the deceased belonged to Vaishali district and had been admitted to a hospital on February 04. "He had been lodged here since 2017 when he was booked in a POCSO Act case which was being heard before the juvenile justice board. He had been unwell for quite sometime and was being treated. His symptoms worsened last week following which he was admitted to the NMCH hospital," the superintendent said. He denied media reports which quoted the boy's parents as having alleged that the inmate had been beaten up and died of injuries. The accused Malvan Tembre suspected that his aunt Santi Tembre practiced some "witchcraft" that made his kin fall sick frequently, said Jawhar police station inspector Dattu Bhoye. A POCSO court here on Monday awarded life imprisonment to a man for raping a four-year-old girl in the district about two weeks ago. Twenty-eight-year-old Kalia alias Karan had abducted and raped the girl on January 30 night at a cremation ground near their huts in the Khatushyamji police station area. He was held the same night and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police filed charge sheet in the case on February 4. Magistrate Anil Kaushil pronounced the judgment and awarded life imprisonment to the convict on Monday.

A bus driver was allegedly beaten up by a passenger for not stopping the vehicle on Gokal Puri flyover on Monday, police said. The driver, identified as Sudhanshu, is a resident of Harsh Vihar, they added. The incident took place at around 12.30 pm on Monday. The bus was plying from Shahbad Dairy to Anand Vihar. When the bus reached near Gokal Puri flyover, a woman, aged around 55 years, asked him to stop but he refused, saying he would stop the vehicle at bus stand, Atul Kumar Thakur, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast), said. Soon after, a person got up and asked the driver to stop. Later, a quarrel erupted between them following which the driver stopped the bus and the person kicked him on his knee and ran away, the DCP said.
