Woman gang-raped near Ludhiana, FIR registered
A woman, aged around 20, was allegedly gang-raped by 10-11 men near Issewal village in Ludhiana.The incident took place on February 9, but came to the fore on February 10 when the victim informed the police. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) VS Brar, the victim informed the police that she, along with her friend, were going in a car from Ludhiana city towards Issewal village on Saturday night when their car was stopped by two unknown men on a motorcycle.The men on bikes started throwing bricks on the car and then dragged them out. Those bike-borne men later called few more men and raped the woman, the police said."A woman complained that 10-11 people stopped her car while she was travelling with a friend and raped her. FIR has been registered and medical examination is being done, an investigation is underway," he said.The case is currently under investigation.
Police officials elope with seized gold biscuits worth Rs 3 crore
Two police officials went absconding after stealing 60 seized gold biscuits worth Rs 3 crore. The smugglers who had stolen the goods in the first place reported the theft.Deepak Kumar, Commissioner said, "Police officials seized goods on 15 January and kept it with themselves. The smugglers reported the incident on February 4 and a case was registered under relevant sections against them.""We have recorded the statement of the smugglers before the court, when the officers in question got to know about it they ran away. Moreover, a case has also been registered against the smugglers," he added.Further investigation in the matter is underway.
Rajasthan: Dalit marriage procession attacked
A Dalit police personnel's wedding procession was allegedly attacked on Saturday in Dugar village here.A police case in this regard was registered on Sunday.The police has detained some people and are on a lookout for a few more in connection with the incident.The groom, Sawai Ram informed that the attack took place when his wedding procession was about to enter Dugar village.He claimed that people belonging to the Rajput community attacked his procession and humiliated him. When people interrupted them, the perpetrators hit back with sharp weapons leaving many injured.Police inspector Ajit Singh, said, "We recorded his statement on Sunday and have registered a case under relevant sections against more than 12 people. Five Sri Lankan refugees were on Monday arrested by the Customs officials after they tried to illegally return to their native country.They were living in Aanayoor Refugee Camp in Madurai. The arrest was made at Ooththtathalai Seashore.The arrested people after interrogation were handed over to Danuskodi police.Investigation in the case is underway.

Mercedes hit and run case: Juvenile to be tried as adult
A Delhi court on Monday ruled that the juvenile accused in a 2016 Mercedes hit-and-run case will be tried as an adult.The accused youth was seeking trial as a juvenile in a case in which he had allegedly run over 32-year-old Siddharth Sharma with his father's Mercedes when he was a teenager. He is 21 now. This is the first case since the amendment of the Juvenile Justice Act in which a juvenile who committed a "heinous" crime will be tried as an adult. A heinous crime is one where the minimum mandatory sentence is 7 years.The Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in June 2016 had dubbed the alleged offence in the case as "heinous".The Delhi Police had charge-sheeted the juvenile in the JJB for the offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The offence of culpable homicide not amounting to murder entails a maximum of 10 years jail. United States President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen, who was slated to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee on February 12, has once again postponed his testimony for the third time on Monday (local time).CNN quoted Cohen's attorney, Lanny Davis, as saying that the Congressional testimony of the former has been postponed as of now under medical grounds and has been rescheduled to February 28."The Senate Select Committee on Intelligence has accepted Mr. Cohen's request for postponement of tomorrow's hearing due to post-surgery medical needs. Venezuela's financial accountability authority probes Guaido
Venezuela's office of financial accountability says it has opened an investigation into opposition leader Juan Guaido's income. The agency's chief, Elvis Amoroso, said Monday that Guaido, who has been recognized as Venezuela's interim president by around 50 countries, "allegedly ... received money from international and national bodies without any justification." Amoroso, an official close to the regime of President Nicolas Maduro, whom Guaido is trying to dislodge, said the parliament speaker is suspected of having "hidden or falsified data in his declaration of assets." Man gets seven-year rigorous imprisonment for abetting bar dancer's suicide
A 30-year-old man was sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment by a sessions court here on Monday for driving his bar dancer-girlfriend to commit suicide in suburban Khar in 2016. Additional sessions judge Surekha Patil convicted the accused Miraj Khan under sections 306 (abetment to suicide), 324 (causing hurt by dangerous weapon), 342 (wrongful confinement) and 504 (breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code, and handed him the rigorous imprisonment. As per prosecution, Khan had a quarrel with the woman on March 19, 2016 on some issues, following which he attacked her and locked her inside her flat on the third floor of a building in the suburb. The woman then set herself on fire and jumped off the balcony of her flat. She was rushed to a nearby hospital by her neighbours, where she succumbed to her injuries, the prosecution said. Allahabad HC quashes its order for CBI probe into teacher recruitment process
In a major relief to the Uttar Pradesh government, a division bench of the Allahabad High Court Monday quashed a single-judge bench order for a CBI probe into the process of appointment of 68,500 assistant basic teachers in the state. Earlier, the division bench passed an interim order on December 11, 2018, staying the single judge order of November 1. Allowing the special appeal filed by the state government against the single judge order, the division bench of Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Manish Mathur of the Lucknow bench observed that there was no material before the single judge to pass the order for a CBI inquiry into the matter. The division bench was of the view that it was improper on the part of the single judge to record finding of corruption without any inquiry into the recruitment process. Juvenile prisoner dies at hospital in Patna
A 17-year-old boy, facing trial in a rape case, died at a hospital here on Monday a week after being admitted for treatment of meningitis, an official said. According to Ajay Kumar, superintendent of the remand home situated in the Gaighat area of the city, the deceased belonged to Vaishali district and had been admitted to a hospital on February 04. "He had been lodged here since 2017 when he was booked in a POCSO Act case which was being heard before the juvenile justice board. He had been unwell for quite sometime and was being treated. His symptoms worsened last week following which he was admitted to the NMCH hospital," the superintendent said. He denied media reports which quoted the boy's parents as having alleged that the inmate had been beaten up and died of injuries. Director, social welfare, Raj Kumar said, "There is no truth in allegations of the boy having been beaten up. Man kills aunt on suspicion of black magic; held
A 29-year-old man was arrested from Jawhar in Palghar district for allegedly killing his 60-year-old aunt last week on suspicion that the "black magic" practiced by her was responsible for illness of his family members, police said Monday. The accused Malvan Tembre suspected that his aunt Santi Tembre practiced some "witchcraft" that made his kin fall sick frequently, said Jawhar police station inspector Dattu Bhoye. He allegedly attacked Santi on February 8 with a sickle at her house when she was alone, and fled after committing the crime, the officer said, adding that the accused was finally arrested Sunday. Police had registered a case on the complaint of the deceased woman's husband.
Man sentenced to life for raping 4-year-old girl
A POCSO court here on Monday awarded life imprisonment to a man for raping a four-year-old girl in the district about two weeks ago. Twenty-eight-year-old Kalia alias Karan had abducted and raped the girl on January 30 night at a cremation ground near their huts in the Khatushyamji police station area. He was held the same night and booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Police filed charge sheet in the case on February 4. Magistrate Anil Kaushil pronounced the judgment and awarded life imprisonment to the convict on Monday.
Devikulam sub-collector to inform HC on violation of its order
Devikulam sub-collector Renu Raj, who was publicly slandered by the local MLA after she tried to stop an unauthorised construction at Munnar hill station, Monday said she would inform the Kerala High Court of the violation of its order, despite a stop memo. Speaking to reporters after meeting the Advocate General (AG) on the matter, she said further action on initiating contempt of court procedures against the Munnar Panchayat Secretary for violation of the court order would be taken as per the court's directions. "We have given a report to the Advocate General with regard to the unauthorised construction done by the Panchayat. AG said he would submit a report on the violation of the court's order and will proceed further as per the court's direction," she said. Passenger assaults driver for not stopping bus
A bus driver was allegedly beaten up by a passenger for not stopping the vehicle on Gokal Puri flyover on Monday, police said. The driver, identified as Sudhanshu, is a resident of Harsh Vihar, they added. The incident took place at around 12.30 pm on Monday. The bus was plying from Shahbad Dairy to Anand Vihar. When the bus reached near Gokal Puri flyover, a woman, aged around 55 years, asked him to stop but he refused, saying he would stop the vehicle at bus stand, Atul Kumar Thakur, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast), said. Soon after, a person got up and asked the driver to stop. Later, a quarrel erupted between them following which the driver stopped the bus and the person kicked him on his knee and ran away, the DCP said. There is swelling over his right knee and he was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for treatment, police said. A case has been registered and police are trying to identify the accused, Thakur said.
