Man, father held in connection with rape-cum-murder of minor
A man allegedly raped a seven-year-old girl and then killed her with the help of his father in outer Delhi's Nihal Vihar following which the accused duo were arrested on Monday, police said. The accused, identified as Rajender (21) and his father Ram Saran (51), are residents of the same locality as the minor, they said. The body of the girl, reported missing on February 9 from Nihal Vihar, was found dumped near a park with her limbs tied with a rope on Sunday, police said. A case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, a senior police officer said. The accused, Rajender, had lured the child to his home by offering chips and then sexually assaulted her, Seju Kuruvilla, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) said. A high-profile honour killing case of a British Sikh woman who was taken to India by her UK-based family and then killed in Punjab over 20 years ago is set to be revived as a television documentary this week. Surjit Kaur Athwal was perceived as bringing shame on her conservative Sikh in-laws from west London and taken to Punjab in December 1998 on the pretext of attending family weddings, where she was killed. Senior Ukraine official charged over deadly acid attack
Ukrainian prosecutors said Monday they had charged a high-ranking regional official with organising a deadly acid attack on a prominent anti-corruption activist that prompted widespread outrage. Kateryna Gandzyuk, an adviser to the mayor of the southern city of Kherson was an outspoken critic of corruption in law enforcement agencies. She was attacked in July and had about a litre of acid poured on her. The 33-year-old died in November after months of treatment, including more than 10 operations. Delhi: Two held for robbing, attacking cop
Two men, who allegedly fired at a police officer last week in a bid to rob him, have been arrested from near Geeta Colony flyover in Delhi, police said on Monday. The accused were identified as Arman Farhaz (30) and Mohammad Riaz (34), they said. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Vedi Ram, posted at the Nizamuddin police station, lodged a complaint on Thursday that on his way to Seelampur after completion of his duty, he was intercepted by two persons near the Golden Jubilee Park at around 11.45 pm, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north) Nupur Prasad said. He alleged that the accused, who came on a motorcycle, asked him to hand over his belongings. When he resisted, they shot him in the stomach and fled with his wallet and mobile phone, she said. Farhaz and Riaz were identified with the help of CCTV footage, the DCP said. Following a tip off, a trap was laid and the accused persons were arrested, Prasad said. CBI to continue Kolkata CP grilling on Tuesday
After questioning for three consecutive days, the CBI Monday asked Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar to report to them again on Tuesday for further quizzing in the multi-crore Saradha chit fund case. However, the questioning of former TMC MP Kunal Ghosh is over for the time being, the agency said. Monday was the third consecutive day of grilling for Kumar and the second for Ghosh in the ponzi scam case worth around Rs 2,000 crore. Kumar has been asked to report for questioning tomorrow again, an official told PTI, requesting anonymity. Burglars' gang busted in Gzb; 3 held, Rs 15 lakh recovered
Three suspected burglars, including a woman, who used to target showrooms, were arrested here and Rs 15 lakh in cash was recovered from them, police said Monday. Besides, four stolen luxury cars used in recce of the showrooms, two country-made pistols, one imported bike, two scooties, 29 laptops, 5 LED lights, one bundle of costly sarees and shutter-cutting instruments were recovered from the possession of the accused, they said. A police official and a 22-year-old man were arrested on Monday for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl in Odisha's Bargarh district, police said. Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in Sohela Banmali Kuanr and a youth -- Kaibalya alias Rinku Nag (22) -- were arrested on charge of raping the minor girl three days ago, Bargarh Superintendent of Police, Mukesh Kumar Bhamo said. While the ASI was placed under suspension, both the accused have been booked under relevant sections of POCSO Act, the SP said. He said a Deputy Superintendent Police (DSP) in Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) has been entrusted with the task of conducting a departmental inquiry into the incident. A Pakistani national was sentenced to seven years in jail by a Dubai court for stabbing his Indian roommate to death in 2018 over an argument on leaving the lights on, a media report said. The Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday convicted the 37-year-old Pakistani man and ordered his deportation after the end of jail-term, the Khaleej Times reported. SC refuses to monitor CBI probe into Saradha chit fund scam
The Supreme Court Monday refused to monitor the ongoing CBI investigation into various chit fund scams, including the one involving Saradha Group of Companies. A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna did not allow the application filed by some investors saying that despite the apex court's 2014 order directing the agency to probe the chit fund scam, the investigation has not attained finality. Senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for some investors who lost money to a ponzi scam, said the CBI probe has not led to any conclusion and the investors are still running from pillar to post for redressal. "We are not inclined to set up a monitoring committee for the chit fund scam probe," the bench said. The apex court, on May 9, 2014, had ordered a CBI probe into the multi-crore rupee chit-fund scam which had also revealed involvement of politicians in West Bengal, Odisha and Assam. A 21-year-old woman was allegedly raped by 10 men near Issewal village on the banks of Sidwan canal, about 15 km from here, after the car she was travelling in with her friend was stopped and she was dragged out, police said Monday. The woman was travelling with a man from Ludhiana to Issewal village on Saturday night when their car was stopped in Jagraon by men in three bikes, who were following them, Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Tarun Rattan told reporters. As soon as they stopped, the car was attacked by the men with stones and bricks, he said. The assailants then dragged them out of the car and took them to a vacant spot on the banks of the canal, where they called six to seven more persons and raped the woman, police said. Liquor store employee robbed of Rs 8 lakh in Ghaziabad
Three bike-borne men looted an employee of a liquor store here at gunpoint Monday, police said. The incident took place in the morning at Chiranjiv Vihar colony here. The accused fired shots into the air when the employee opposed the robbery bid, they said. SP (City) Shlok Kumar said according to the complaint lodged by the liquor store owner, the employee, Rupendra Chaudhary, took Rs 8 lakh from his house and reached his office where the store owner runs his real estate office.
