Japanese tourist stabbed multiple times is now stable: Police

The condition of a 41-year-old Japanese national, who was stabbed multiple times by unidentified persons when he was headed towards a gurdwara in northwest Delhi's Siraspur, is stated to be stable, police said Monday. The victim, identified as Tadayuki Kurihara, was allegedly attacked at around 6.30 pm by a group of men who decamped with his mobile phone and money, they said. "The Japanese national's condition is stable," a police official said. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital and later, he was referred to the LNJP hospital where his condition is stated to stable and will be discharged soon, police added. Police said the victim had been on a two-month solo trip and landed in India four days ago. Footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area are being scanned to ascertain the exact sequence of events, police said, adding that no one has been arrested so far.

CBI orders to close bribery case against CA Sanjay Bhandari

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday ordered to close the case against Chartered Auditor Sanjay Bhandari in an alleged bribery case. Interim CBI Director M Nageswar Rao ordered the closure of the case."After investigation and for want of evidence, the decision was taken by the earlier Director on March 3, 2018, for the closure of the case. Subsequently, the file was moved for re-investigation before the interim director," the CBI said."Giving an approval would have amounted to taking a policy decision which would have been against the guidelines issued by the Supreme Court hence the request for reopening was turned down," the CBI added.The CBI in 2016, registered a case against nine senior Income Tax officials, including Delhi's principal commissioner of the Income Tax Department, S K Mittal, and three private persons, for allegedly indulging in corrupt practices. Chartered accountant Bhandari and his sons Shreyans and Divyang were also named as accused in the case.The

Law Minster bats for all-India exam to recruit lower court judges

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday pitched for a national-level entrance test for "talent infusion" into the subordinate judiciary. He said the all-India examination, which the UPSC could conduct, would allow the pool of talented young lawyers who graduate every year from national law universities to be part of the subordinate judiciary. He was speaking at a Constitution Day event in the presence of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and other senior judges. Appointments to the lower judiciary in the states are made by the respective high courts either directly or through public service commissions through state-level examinations. The government has in the past proposed an all-India judicial service to be conducted the Union Public Service Commission. But nine high courts have opposed the proposal to have an all-India service for lower judiciary. Eight others have sought changes in the proposed framework and only two have supported the idea. Incorrect to call Delhi national crime capital: Police on Delhi govt resolution

The Delhi Police on Monday said the number of heinous crimes in the national capital has declined this year from last year and it was incorrect to call the city the "crime capital". The reaction came hours after the Delhi Assembly adopted a government resolution claiming that the city has become the "national crime capital". When asked if this was the first time the Delhi Police was responding to a resolution passed in the Delhi Assembly, an officer in the force said, "We have the right to give our version. Bhima Koregaon violence: Pune Police get 90 days more to file charge sheet

The Pune Sessions Court on Monday granted 90 days more the Pune Police to file the charge sheet against four accused-Varavara Rao, Sudha Bhardwaj, Arun Ferreira, and Vernon Gonsalves-in connection with their alleged involvement in Bhima Koregaon violence.The Pune Police on November 23 had filed an application in the Pune Sessions Court seeking a 90-day extension to file charge sheet against the four. The four activists were arrested from various locations on August 28 for their alleged role in instigating caste violence in Maharashtra's Bhima Koregaon village on January 1, 2018.Earlier on November 15, the Pune Police filed a charge sheet in the case naming ten people as accused.On January 1, violence erupted at the event organised to mark 100 years of the Bhima-Koregaon battle, leaving one dead and several injured, including 10 policemen. Two persons arrested for stealing sacks of bidi leaves

Two persons were arrested Monday for allegedly stealing 700 sacks of bidi leaves worth lakhs of rupees from a godown here in Palamau district, police said. The police recovered the stolen sacks of bidi leaves after a raid was conducted by special police team formed to look into the case and apprehend the culprits, said Superintendent of Police, Indrajeet Mahatha. Addressing a press conference here, Mahatha said the stolen Bidi leaves were supposed to be delivered to a West Bengal-based bidi company and were about Rs 42 lakh. Based on the FIR registered by the godown owner, Raghvendra Tiwari, the SP said a special police team led by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Prem Nath was formed to probe the case. Governance is executive's domain, law minister says in presence of CJI

In presence of the Chief Justice of India, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said Monday the judiciary has to decide "how far" it can go in taking over power on issues of governance as he stressed the need for all organs to appreciate the proverbial 'Lakshman rekha'. Court extends remand of Brajesh Thakur aides by another 4 days

A court here Monday extended the CBI remand of two key aides of Brajesh Thakur, prime accused in the shelter home sex scandal, by another four days. Special POCSO judge R P Tiwari extended the CBI remand of Madhu Kumari and Ashwani by four days, though the investigating agency had sought the same for five days. Appearing for Madhu, who was arrested last month after remaining traceless for many months, counsel Priya Ranjan alleged before the court that his client was being subjected to "torture" in the custody of the CBI and opposed the probe agency's request for extending the remand. The court, however, granted the extension while warning the CBI that no torture should take place during questioning. HC quashes charge sheet against MDMK chief

The Madras High Court Monday quashed the charge sheet framed against MDMK leader Vaiko for alleged offences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in 2007. Justice Anand Venkatesh passed the order on a plea moved by Vaiko assailing the charge sheet on the file of the XII Metropolitan Magistrate Court here. According to the petitioner, on November 3, 2007 LTTE political wing leader Suba Tamilselvan was allegedly killed by the Sri Lankan military. Condemning the killing, he along with Pazha Nedumaran organised a procession in the city. Denying permission for the procession, Vaiko and 261 others were arrested by the police. Vaiko was charged for offences under the Act and police filed a charge sheet before the magistrate concerned on December 11, 2009. The petitioner contended that the sanction granted by the state to prosecute him under the Act was defective. No flesh trade at city's massage parlours: Delhi Police to HC

The city police told the Delhi High Court Monday that no illegal flesh trade was going on in the massage parlours of the national capital. The claim was made in an affidavit filed in response to a PIL that has alleged that sex rackets are rampant in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) in the garb of massage parlours. The matter is listed for hearing Tuesday before a bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao. In its affidavit filed through additional standing counsel Sanjoy Ghose, the Delhi Police said of the 397 massage parlours in the national capital, complaints of flesh trade were received against nine and following investigations, the allegations were found to be unsubstantiated. The police also said if any activity of a sex racket came to their notice, appropriate legal action was taken in accordance with the provisions of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act of 1987 and other legal provisions. Runaway Guj ponzi scheme promoter held from Nepal

A 'ponzi' scheme promoter from Ahmedabad, who is wanted for allegedly duping investors to the tune of Rs 260 crore, was Monday arrested from Pokhara town in Nepal, a Gujarat CID-Crime official said. The accused Vinay Shah has been on the run since the last two weeks after cases were registered against him at various police stations of the city. "We had alerted the Nepalese government that Vinay Shah might have fled there. Today, he was caught by Nepal Police with Rs 31 lakh in cash, including foreign currencies like dollar, pound and euro. Police have also arrested Shah's female friend Chanda Thapa from Pokhara town," said Haresh Dudhat, Superintendent of Police, Anti-Economic Offences Cell of the state CID. More than 200 Chinese arrested in Cambodia for online scams

Police in Cambodia have arrested more than 200 Chinese citizens accused of defrauding people in China over the internet. Gen Y Sok Khy, director of the Interior Ministry's Department of Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime, said 36 women were among the 235 Chinese arrested Monday in three different villages in Takeo province, south of the capital, Phnom Penh. Online scams by Chinese gangs that operate from foreign countries and target mainland Chinese are common throughout Southeast Asia and have been found as far away as Kenya and Spain. Cambodia has arrested and sent at least 1,000 Chinese and Taiwanese residents allegedly involved in such schemes to China since 2012. The scams are carried out by making phone calls over the internet and employing deception, threats and blackmail against the victims.

Sohrabuddin case: Accused former cop calls charges false, fabricated

An accused in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh "fake" encounter case told a special court here Monday that the entire case against him was "false and fabricated". Former police inspector Narayan Sinh Dabhi recorded his statement under section 313 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) Monday before special CBI Judge S J Sharma. Under the provision, after the examination of witnesses, a final chance is given to an accused to record his statement. The judge posed over 400 questions to Dabhi after which the court asked if the accused wanted to say anything more. To this, Dabhi said the case against him was false and fabricated. "Right from the beginning, this case has been false and hoisted upon me," he said. Dabhi, a former inspector with the Gujarat ATS, is accused of being part of the team that killed Shaikh on the outskirts of Ahmedabad in November, 2005.
