Tihar inmate dies of heart attack

A 58-year-old murder convict, who was serving a life-term in Tihar jail, died of a heart attack at a city hospital on Friday, prison authorities said. The deceased, Sikander, was lodged in the prison for the last 23 years. Earlier, police had said Sikander was suffering from cancer and had died during treatment. Later, reports showed that he died of a heart attack. "Sikander was a heart patient. A few days ago, he complained of chest pain and was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital," Director General of Tihar Jail Ajay Kashyap said. He was admitted to the hospital after his condition became serious, police said, adding that he died on Friday morning.

Gujarat: Three killed in hit-and-run accident

Three men were killed after their motorcycle was hit from behind by a truck in Dahod district of Gujarat Friday morning, police said. The unidentified truck driver fled after the accident. The deceased were identified as Vipul Sangadia (19), Ajay Sangadia (19) and Krishna Mavi (19). They were heading for Dahod when a speeding truck hit their motorcycle from behind near Rabdal village, police said. The three were flung in the air by the impact and died on the spot. While the truck driver drove off, some onlookers noted down the truck's registration number. Police are conducting futher probe.

Man, out on bail, arrested for extortion and robbery

A 33-year-old man, released on bail, was arrested for allegedly extorting and robbing a builder of cash and attempting to kill another man in central Delhi's Karol Bagh area, police said Friday. The accused was identified as Jojo alias Gyaneshwar alias Ravi, they said. Recently, a case of robbery was registered wherein the victim alleged that he had been receiving extortion calls from Jojo for the last three months. When he did not give money, Jojo, along with his accomplices, barged into the victim's office at Raigarpura in Karol Bagh on November 11 and threatened him, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Amit Sharma said. The officer said that Jojo demanded Rs 2 lakh from the victim and also robbed him of gold chain and Rs 20,000-25,000 in cash at gunpoint, the officer said, adding that the victim also accused Jojo of damaging his office by throwing bricks. Bhima Koregaon violence: Police seek 90-day extension to file charge sheet

The Pune Police on Friday filed an application in the Pune Sessions Court seeking a 90-day extension to file charge sheet against four people-- Sudha Bhardwaj, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves and Varavara Rao in the Bhima Koregaon violence case.The four activists were arrested from various locations on August 28 for their alleged role in instigating caste violence in Maharashtra's Bhima Koregaon village on January 1.The last date of filing charge sheet against four is November 25. A British corporate investigator has filed a complaint to UK regulators about Chinese state TV, saying its British license should be revoked because it broadcast his forced confession when he was imprisoned in China. Peter Humphrey filed a complaint Friday against China Central Television and its international division, China Global Television, for violating British broadcasting rules. Humphrey and his wife spent two years in prison after being convicted of illegally acquiring personal information of Chinese citizens. Man kills wife, injures step-daughters with truck in a fit of rage

A 32-year-old inebriated man allegedly mowed down his wife with his truck and injured his two step-daughters in a fit of rage at JJ Colony in north Dwarka, police said Friday. Akhlesh (32), a native of Garpura village in Begusarai district of Bihar, used to quarrel with his wife, Vibha (38), frequently over his extra-marital affair, which led to the incident. He was arrested from Dwarka Mod, police said. The accused's 17-year-old step-daughter, who survived the incident, told police that her mother Vibha married Akhlesh after getting divorced from her husband. The couple used to stay at a rented house in Kakrola village. Two Kashmiri men arrested with heroin, cannabis in Jammu, Samba

Two men were arrested with heroin and cannabis in Jammu and Kashmir's Jammu and Samba districts, police said Friday. The arrests were made after a police team intercepted a car coming from border side near Rakh Amb Talli in Samba district, they said. During frisking of the person driving the vehicle, 112 grams of cannabis was recovered from his possession, they said, adding that the accused person identified as Ishtiyaq Ahmed of south Kashmir's Kulgam district was arrested on the spot and the contraband item was also seized. Aircel-Maxis case: P Chidambaram, son deny allegations of non-cooperation levelled by CBI, ED

Former Union Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti have denied allegations of the CBI and ED before a Delhi court that they have been evasive and non-cooperative in the probe in the Aircel-Maxis case. Two drug smugglers held with 14 kg poppy in J-K's Samba

Two suspected drug smugglers were arrested and 14 kg poppy seized from their possession in Jammu and Kashmir's samba district Friday, police said. A police party during a routine checking at Mansar crossing in the district intercepted a tractor-trolley, they said. During the checking, 14 Kg of poppy was recovered which was concealed in the tyres of the vehicle, they added. The accused persons, identified as Gurmaj Singh and Amar Singh of Amritsar, were arrested, they said. A case was registered at Samba police station in this connection and a probe has been initiated, police said.

Turkey charges arch-foe Gulen and 27 others over Russian envoy's killing

A Turkish prosecutor on Friday charged 28 suspects including US-based Muslim preacher Fethullah Gulen, blamed by Ankara for a 2016 failed coup, over the murder of the Russian ambassador later in the same year. The indictment by the Ankara public prosecutor came nearly two years after Andrei Karlov was shot dead in December 2016, state-run news agency Anadolu reported. Turkey accuses Gulen of ordering the July 15, 2016 attempted putsch, a claim he strongly denies. Karlov was shot dead by an off-duty Turkish policeman Mevlut Mert Altintas, 22, while inaugurating a photo exhibition in Ankara. Man caught for smuggling gold worth Rs 79 lakh at Delhi airport

A man was arrested at the Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold worth about Rs 79 lakh, officials said Friday. The 23-year-old man was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival from Riyadh on Monday. "A detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of 22 gold bars of foreign origin collectively weighing 2.5 kg," a statement issued by the customs said. The gold bars, valued at about Rs 79 lakh, have been seized and the passenger, who is a native of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested, the statement said.

BJP general secretary K Surendran Friday alleged that the office of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has been "unleashing" an "orchestrated" campaign to keep him behind bars. Surendran was speaking to reporters at a court complex at Raanni in Pathanamthitta district from where he was remanded to 14-days judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the protests at Sabarimala. "This is a false case. Chief Minister's office has unleashed an orchestrated attack on me. They are planning to put me in the Kannur Central jail where dreaded criminals are lodged," Surendran said. He was taken into custody earlier this week from Nilackal, the base camp of Sabarimala, after he refused to go back despite the police request. A 28-year-old sanitation worker was Friday arrested for the alleged sexual harassment of a woman student of SRM University following a complaint by the varsity, the police said. The students had Thursday protested inside the university, located at Kattankulathur on the outskirts of Chennai, alleging inaction on the part of the administration despite the victim's complaint. University Vice-Chancellor Sandeep Sancheti, however, denied the allegations.
