A 58-year-old murder convict, who was serving a life-term in Tihar jail, died of a heart attack at a city hospital on Friday, prison authorities said. The deceased, Sikander, was lodged in the prison for the last 23 years. Earlier, police had said Sikander was suffering from cancer and had died during treatment. Later, reports showed that he died of a heart attack. "Sikander was a heart patient. A few days ago, he complained of chest pain and was admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital," Director General of Tihar Jail Ajay Kashyap said. He was admitted to the hospital after his condition became serious, police said, adding that he died on Friday morning.
Three men were killed after their motorcycle was hit from behind by a truck in Dahod district of Gujarat Friday morning, police said. The unidentified truck driver fled after the accident. The deceased were identified as Vipul Sangadia (19), Ajay Sangadia (19) and Krishna Mavi (19). They were heading for Dahod when a speeding truck hit their motorcycle from behind near Rabdal village, police said. The three were flung in the air by the impact and died on the spot. While the truck driver drove off, some onlookers noted down the truck's registration number. Police are conducting futher probe.
A 33-year-old man, released on bail, was arrested for allegedly extorting and robbing a builder of cash and attempting to kill another man in central Delhi's Karol Bagh area, police said Friday. The accused was identified as Jojo alias Gyaneshwar alias Ravi, they said. Recently, a case of robbery was registered wherein the victim alleged that he had been receiving extortion calls from Jojo for the last three months. When he did not give money, Jojo, along with his accomplices, barged into the victim's office at Raigarpura in Karol Bagh on November 11 and threatened him, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Amit Sharma said. The officer said that Jojo demanded Rs 2 lakh from the victim and also robbed him of gold chain and Rs 20,000-25,000 in cash at gunpoint, the officer said, adding that the victim also accused Jojo of damaging his office by throwing bricks. A 32-year-old inebriated man allegedly mowed down his wife with his truck and injured his two step-daughters in a fit of rage at JJ Colony in north Dwarka, police said Friday. Akhlesh (32), a native of Garpura village in Begusarai district of Bihar, used to quarrel with his wife, Vibha (38), frequently over his extra-marital affair, which led to the incident. Two men were arrested with heroin and cannabis in Jammu and Kashmir's Jammu and Samba districts, police said Friday. The arrests were made after a police team intercepted a car coming from border side near Rakh Amb Talli in Samba district, they said. Two suspected drug smugglers were arrested and 14 kg poppy seized from their possession in Jammu and Kashmir's samba district Friday, police said. A police party during a routine checking at Mansar crossing in the district intercepted a tractor-trolley, they said. During the checking, 14 Kg of poppy was recovered which was concealed in the tyres of the vehicle, they added. The accused persons, identified as Gurmaj Singh and Amar Singh of Amritsar, were arrested, they said. A man was arrested at the Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle into the country gold worth about Rs 79 lakh, officials said Friday. The 23-year-old man was intercepted by customs officials after his arrival from Riyadh on Monday. "A detailed personal and baggage search of the passenger resulted in the recovery of 22 gold bars of foreign origin collectively weighing 2.5 kg," a statement issued by the customs said. The gold bars, valued at about Rs 79 lakh, have been seized and the passenger, who is a native of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, has been arrested, the statement said.
BJP general secretary K Surendran Friday alleged that the office of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has been "unleashing" an "orchestrated" campaign to keep him behind bars. Surendran was speaking to reporters at a court complex at Raanni in Pathanamthitta district from where he was remanded to 14-days judicial custody for his alleged involvement in the protests at Sabarimala.
