District judge booked by ACB on graft charges in Telangana

An additional district judge in Telangana has been booked on charges of amassing disproportionate assets, by the state Anti-Corruption Bureau which searched houses of him and his associates Wednesday. The simultaneous searches were being carried out in several places in Telangana and in Maharashtra, a day after the bureau registered the case against XIV Additional District Judge Vaidya Vara Prasad of Ranga Reddy district court based on a direction from the high court here, an ACB release said. The High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh had received a complaint petition against the judge and after due preliminary verification ordered the ACB to proceed against him. Accordingly, a case under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the judge for allegedly amassing disproportionate assets to the known sources of income. 1984 anti-Sikh riots: 2 convicted in murder case

After 30 years, a Delhi Court on Wednesday held two accused, Naresh Sehrawat and Yashpal Singh, guilty in connection with the murder of two Sikhs in South Delhi's Mahipalpur area during 1984 anti-Sikh riots.Both the accused were taken into custody immediately after the pronouncement of the court judgment. The court will pronounce the quantum of punishment on Thursday.Sehrawat and Singh were earlier booked on the charges of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, weapon possession, attempt to murder and murder etc under Sections 452, 302, 307, 324, 395, 436 read with Section 149 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).According to official records, about 2,800 Sikhs were killed across India, including 2,100 in Delhi, during the clashes which broke out after then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards.

Goa women Cong chief questionned in POCSO case

Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (GPMCC) president Pratima Coutinho was on Wednesday questionned in connection with a POCSO case lodged against her for allegedly revealing identity of a molestation victim, a police official said. Investigation officer police sub-inspector Sandhya Gupta questioned the Congress leader for over an hour at the Women's Police Station here this afternoon. Coutinho was booked under section 74 of the Juvenile Justice Act,section 4 ofthe Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and section 8 (2) of Goa Children's Act on complaints lodged by the Shiv Sena and some NGOs earlier this year. She was questionned in this connection on July 14. When will bypolls to 2 constituencies be held: HC to TN CEO

The Madras High Court on Wednesday sought to know from the state Chief Electoral Officer when the Election Commission proposes to hold the by-elections to Tiruparankunram and Tiruvarur Assembly constituencies. The assembly seats had fallen vacant after the death of DMK leader M Karunanidhi (Thiruvarur) and AIADMK MLA A K Bose (Thiruparankundram). Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a bench comprising justices K K Sasidharan and P D Audikesavalu here expressed dissatisfaction over the by-elections for the two constituencies not being held. It asked the Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer what steps had been taken to hold the by-elections in the two constituencies. If any by-election schedule for the constituencies had been prepared, then the CEO could submit the same to the court, the bench said. The petitioner submitted that the constituencies were without a representative for a long time and sought a direction from the court to the EC to conduct the elections.

Notorious bovine smuggler detained under PSA in J-K

An alleged notorious bovine smuggler was detained Wednesday under the Public Safety Act (PSA) in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Khadam Hussain, a resident of Behrote village of Thanamandi, has been booked and detained under the PSA for his repeated involvement in cases of bovine smuggling in the district, a police spokesperson said. During a recent exercise, he said it came to fore that Hussain is involved in multiple cases of bovine smuggling in Rajouri and adjoining Poonch district. A dossier was prepared by district police and the same was forwarded by Senior Superintendent of Police, Rajouri, Yougal Manhas to district magistrate who formally issued the order of his detention under the PSA, the spokesperson said. Kidnapped trader released

A trader from Assam was kidnapped by miscreants in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills district but was left off unharmed by them, a senior police officer said Wednesday. Tapos Dey (37) of Krishnai in Assam's Goalpara district was kidnapped by the miscreants from near the village of Bansam Awe on Tuesday morning while he was on his way to the weekly market at Rongsak. The kidnappers panicked after hearing the launch of a search operation by the police as well as villagers at multiple points, the officer said. The kidnappers left Dey in the deep jungle on Tuesday night. He reached the village of Bansam Awe where a villager provided him food and shelter for the night, they police said. Bengal court convicts 7 in murder of police constable

A court here Wednesday held seven persons guilty of murdering a police constable when he was tried to save his niece from being molested in 2012. Barrackpore Sessions Judge Tapas Kumar Mitra convicted them for killing Asim Dam, who was attached to Entally police station of Kolkata Police. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced on Thursday, the judge said. The court found Abhijit Ghosh, Biswajit Ghosh, Debu Mukherjee, Tapan Chandra, Kuntal Chakraborti, Botu Majumdar and Prasenjit Dutta guilty. Dam was at his residence in Bisharpara under Airport police station in North 24 Parganas district on the day of Holi on March 8, 2012. It was alleged that some miscreants entered his house and on the pretext of applying gulal, misbehaved with his niece and tried to molest her. Following protests by Dam, the miscreants left, only to return with some more men and attacked Dam and his other family members with iron rods and sticks. Dam was grievously injured in the attack and died in hospital .

Five arrested in connection with killing of tigress in UP

Five persons have been arrested here for allegedly killing a tigress by running a tractor over it in Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR), a senior official said Wednesday. The incident took place on November 4 when the tigress attacked a local resident, who was critically injured and later succumbed, following which angry villagers allegedly killed the animal, officials had said. "The arrested persons are Bablu, Lal Bahadur, Chauthi, Subhash and Om Prakash, all residents of Chaltua village under Sehramau police limits of Pilibhit district. They were arrested Tuesday. The sixth named accused Mukesh is yet to be arrested," Ramesh Kumar Pandey, field director of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve said. WB man held in Goa for possessing ganja worth Rs 24,000

A man from West Bengal was arrested for allegedly possessing ganja worth Rs 24,000 in Calangute village, 10 kms away from here, police said on Wednesday. The accused identified as Saddam Hussain Molla, who hails from Dakshin Dinajpur in West Bengal, was arrested following a raid conducted at Calangute market on Tuesday night, a police officer said. "Police had received a tip-off that the man was coming to the market with some drugs to give it to the prospective customers," Inspector of Calangute police station Jivba Dalvi said. "Accordingly, a team was set up and the police waited at Calangute market in civil clothes. As soon as the man arrived at the spot, police took him into custody," he added. FIR alleging bribery a backlash to complaints made against CBI Chief, Asthana tells HC

CBI Special Director Rakesh Asthana Wednesday claimed before the Delhi High Court that the FIR lodged against him on bribery allegations was a backlash to complaints of criminal misconduct by the probe agency's chief Alok Kumar Verma. Asthana also said that prior approval from the competent authority is mandatory to initiate probe against a public servant which was not taken in this case. He further said that the CBI avoided this issue in its response filed earlier to his petition seeking quashing of the FIR against him. Asthana made these claims in his rejoinder to CBI's response to his petition. Parnax Lab settles case with Sebi, pays over Rs 10 lakh

Pharmaceutical company Parnax Lab has settled proceedings with markets regulator Sebi in connection with alleged violation of listing norms on payment of over Rs 10 lakh towards settlement charges. The order came after the company approached the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) proposing a settlement to pay a penalty without admission or denial of guilt. "The proposed adjudication proceedings for the alleged default ... are settled qua the applicant (Parnax Lab Ltd)," Sebi said in a settlement order dated November 9. It further said that Sebi will not initiate any enforcement action against the firm for the default. Janardhan Reddy gets bail in bribery case

The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court here on Wednesday granted bail to mining baron and former state minister Gali Janardhan Reddy against a bond of Rs one lakh. DRI seizes foreign currency worth Rs 1 crore, 3 held

Three passengers were arrested from the international airport in Shamshabad here Wednesday by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence personnel for allegedly attempting to smuggle USD 1,38,000 (approximately Rs one crore). Based on specific intelligence, the DRI officials intercepted the passengers bound for Hong Kong by a Thai Airways flight, scheduled to depart at 1.30 a.m at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. On examination of their checked-in baggage, foreign currency of USD 1,38,000 was found, a release from the DRI's (Hyderabad Zonal Unit) said here. The passengers during interrogation said the currency was obtained from unauthorised dealers to be smuggled out of the country, it said. HC directs North 24 Parganas police chief to appear before it on Nov 26

The Calcutta High Court Wednesday directed the Superintendent of Police (SP) of North 24 Parganas district to appear before it on November 26 to explain the police's failure to record the statement of two police constables in connection with a murder case. A division bench comprising justices Joymalyo Bagchi and R K Kapur directed the SP to supervise investigation into the case as the investigating officer (IO) failed to carry out the court's direction to examine the police personnel and record their statements, who were on guard duty at the premises of an accused. The investigating officer has also been summoned to appear before the court on November 26, along with the SP. HC dismisses Daati Maharaj's plea for review of its decision transferring rape probe to CBI

The Delhi High Court Wednesday dismissed self-styled preacher Daati Maharaj's plea for review of its decision to transfer the probe in the rape case against him to CBI and cautioned the agency against starting a fresh inquiry in the matter. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao rejected the preacher's contention that facts were suppressed by the petitioner - a lawyer - while seeking transfer of the probe. It said the investigation was handed over to CBI "after going through the charge sheet in detail" and after considering the plea moved by the "victim herself". Wife of former Malaysian leader faces new graft charges

Malaysia's anti-graft agency said Wednesday the wife of ex-Prime Minister Najib Razak will face new corruption charges, along with two former government officials and a businessman. The agency said Rosmah Mansor will be charged Thursday with Najib's former special officer, Rizal Mansor, in a case linked to a solar energy project for rural schools in eastern Sarawak state on Borneo island. School teacher arrested for sexually assaulting minor girl

A teacher of a private school in Sikkim's East District was arrested by police for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old-girl, a police officer said Wednesday. The teacher was arrested on Tuesday night after the parents of the girl lodged a complaint at Pakyong police station against him, the officer said. A case under various sections of the IPC and also under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) was registered against the accused teacher, he said. The girl was staying in the school's hostel and the accused teacher who was also the hostel in-charge had been sexually assaulting her for many months, the officer said quoting the complaint lodged by the parents of the girl. The girl narrated her ordeal to her elder sister who then informed their parents about it. The parents lodged a complaint at the Pakyong police station, he added.

HC refuses to entertain PIL against Centre's orders sending CBI chief and second-in-command on leave

The Delhi High Court Wednesday declined to interfere with a plea relating to the Centre's orders sending CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana on leave and appointing IPS officer M Nageshwar Rao as the interim head of the agency.
