27 people arrested for gambling; Rs 5 lakh cash seized

Twenty seven people were arrested from the house of a BJP leader in Shamli district for gambling and cash worth Rs 5 lakh was seized from their possession, police said Monday. The house of the local BJP leader was raided on Sunday following which 27 people were found gambling, SHO Dharmendra Singh said. The matter is being investigated, he added.

Man hacked to death at lodge in Kalyan, one arrested

A 41-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing another person at a lodge in Kalyan town of the district, police said Monday. The accused was identified as Sandeep Baddhe (41). According to police, Baddhe had checked into the lodge Sunday morning. A man in his early 40s arrived at the lodge in the afternoon and said he wanted to meet Baddhe. The lodge staff directed him to Baddhe's room. A little while later, the staff heard commotion, and then the accused emerged from the room with his clothes stained with blood. He allegedly shouted "Anil Sanap has not repaid my money and therefore I have done his game (killed him) and nobody should inform police". As Baddhe left the lodge, the staff entered the room to find the visitor lying in a pool of blood. A sickle was found nearby. He was soon arrested, said inspector P R Londhe of MFC police station. Woman found dead over dowry dispute; husband arrested

The body of a woman was found hanging from the ceiling of her house in Jaroda village here in a suspected case of dowry death, police said Monday. Rama (25), wife of Sonu, was found dead Sunday, they said. Sonu has been arrested following a complaint by the victim's brother that the accused along with his family used to torture the woman for dowry, police said. The brother claimed that his sister was strangulated to death by her husband and in-laws, they said. The matter is being investigated, police added.

Bihar: Couple thrashed over suspicion of being child kidnappers

A couple was beaten up by a mob on Sunday over suspicion of kidnapping a child in Bihar's Supaul district.The incident happened near the Sadar police station when the woman offered ice cream to the child who was playing around. The locals misunderstood the couple as child kidnappers and started thrashing them.On receiving the information, Deputy Superintendent of Police Vidyasagar and Police Chief Vasudev Rai reached the spot and rescued the couple.Further investigation in the matter is underway.

24-yr-old man absconding for 6 months arrested

A 24-year-old man, who was absconding for the past six months, was arrested in connection with a firing incident, police said Sunday. The accused, identified as Abhishek, was carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his arrest. On March 26, a jeweller's son and his friend were shot at in Lajpat Nagar, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast) Chinmoy Biswal. In April, three people -- Shibu alias Subegh Singh, Praveen Singhal and Honey Chaudhary alias Sharwan -- were arrested, but Abhishek was absconding, said Biswal. Acting on a tip-off, a trap was laid trap was laid near Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station on Saturday and Abhishek was arrested, Biswal added.

Police registers case after video of group clash in Shahdara gone viral

A case was registered after a video of two groups clashing in Shahdara went viral, police said Sunday. The group clash happened on Thursday over the ownership of a shop, police said, adding they have identified the persons involved in the clash. In the video footage, a group of men can be seen chasing some men and thrashing them. A person was also seen with a weapon in the video but no shots were fired, they said. Police said the weapon seen in the video is a licensed one and necessary action for its cancellation is being taken. A case has been registered on the complaint of one party and the other party has been asked to give a complaint, they said.

CBI registers case against its own Special Director

25-yr-old man arrested with 131 cartons of illicit liquor

A 25-year-old man was arrested after 131 cartons of illicit liquor were seized from his possession, police said Sunday. The accused was identified as Ravi, resident of Jhajjar district in Haryana, said Additional Commissioner of Police (crime) A K Singla. Acting on a tip-off, a team was constituted to conduct raids near Madanpur village. On Sunday at around 1.30 am, the team intercepted two vehicles. The police arrested Ravi while his co-accused Sandeep alias Sonu, a resident of Jhajjar district in Haryana, managed to escape, Singla said. During interrogation, Ravi disclosed that he used to work with Ola as a driver. Later, he came in contact with Sandeep and started smuggling liquor, the official said. Imposter held for cheating civic body heads in AP, Telangana

A 41-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly duping several heads of civic bodies in Andhra pradesh and Telangana by posing as a government official and taking money from them by promising to secure Central funds under various schemes, police said Sunday. The accused who posed as the Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban Development was caught after he cheated the husband of a Chairperson of Suryapet Municipality of Rs 30,000, under the pretext of getting funds for an unemployment allowance scheme, a police release said. During investigation it was found that the accused, a habitual offender and facing 32 cases in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh adopted similar modus operandi to cheat the heads of Municipalities, the release added.

TMC block president shot at

A Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader was shot at and critically injured by unidentified persons in West Bengal's Birbhum district Sunday, police said. TMC Khayrasole block president Dipak Ghosh was riding a motorcycle with a party worker when unidentified persons fired at him near Khayrasole village, they said. Ghosh received bullet injuries on his shoulder and lower part of the body, the police said, adding he has been admitted at a private nursing home in Durgapur in a serious condition. The Birbhum district TMC president Anubrata Mondal alleged that goons hired by the BJP attacked Ghosh. The BJP district president Ramkrishna Roy denied the allegations of Mondal and instead alleged that TMC group rivalry was behind the attack.

3 persons booked for bitcoin fraud in Vadodara

A Vadodara-based businessman has filed a complaint that three persons hailing from New Delhi and Pune duped him of Rs 3 crore in a transaction involving over 64 bitcoins, a senior police official said Sunday. Deputy Police Commissioner Jaydeepsinh Jadeja said that, based on the complaint by Pravesh Nike, a case had been registered against Amit and Ajay Bharadwaj from Delhi and Hemant Bhopena from Pune. Nike claimed that the three, whom he met through an online group trading in bitcoins, reneged on their promise to give a return of ten per cent on bitcoin transactions. He alleged that the three also removed the word "bitcoin" from the agreement documents signed by both parties and replaced it with the term "crypto currency". Jadeja said that a case had been registered against the three under relevant sections of the IPC and Information Technology Act and probe was underway. In a first, CBI books its Special Director in corruption charges

In an unprecedented move, the CBI has booked its Special Director Rakesh Asthana for allegedly receiving bribes from middlemen to give relief to a businessman being probed by him in a case involving meat exporter Moin Qureshi, officials said Sunday. The CBI action comes two months after Asthana, the second in command in the CBI, wrote to Cabinet Secretary on August 24 alleging that the businessman had paid CBI Director Alok Verma Rs 2 crore to get relief in the case. The matter was referred to the Central Vigilance Commission which is looking into the allegations. While allegations and counter allegations were coming thick and fast from the camps of CBI number one and two, the agency booked Asthana under charges of criminal conspiracy, corruption and criminal misconduct in a first-of-its-kind case. 2 held for duping people on pretext of doubling money

Two persons who duped people by promising to double their money were arrested on Sunday, police said. Nitish and Mithun would assure the victims that their money would be invested in the stock market and within 30 days it will be doubled, they said. They had even setup a fake company with a website to lure the investors, they said. The duo was held by the Sihani Gate Police on Sunday morning following a complaint by one of the victims, police said, adding that both have confessed to their crime. A luxury car, six mobile phones and an equal number of ATM cards, two laptops and cheque books were recovered from them, city superintendent of police Shlok Kumar said.

Guj ATS nabs man from Kashmir in heroin smuggling case

The Gujarat Anti Terrorism Squad arrested a man from Budgam in Jammu and Kashmir in connection with a heroin smuggling case, a senior official said Sunday. In August, ATS had arrested two men in Gujarat and seized 5 kilogrammes of heroin worth Rs 14.84 crore in the international market. ATS officials said that one of those arrested in August, Rafiq Adam Sumra, had handed over a large part of the contraband to Kashmir residents Nazir Ahmed Thakar and Manzoor Ahmad Mir at Unjha town in Mehsana district. "Manzoor Ahmad Mir has been arrested from Budgam in Jammu and Kashmir in connection with heroin smuggling case," Gujarat ATS Senior Superintendent of Police Himanshu Shukla said Sunday.
