A man carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head and wanted for his alleged involvement in a plot to rob and kill an elderly couple was arrested, police said Sunday. The accused, Paramjit Singh, was arrested Saturday. He was also part of the plan to eliminate an eyewitness in a murder case against one of the co-conspirators, they said. Two of his co-conspirators -- Ombir and Jagdish -- were arrested in June this year from Delhi Cantt area, while conspiring to kill the two senior senior citizens, police said. Paramjit, who was arrested from his sister's house in Jhajhar district of Haryana, had been absconding since the arrest of the other two. A loaded sophisticated pistol and three bullets were recovered from him, police said, adding that similar weapons and live cartridges had been recovered from the other two. A minor girl was allegedly raped by a man in Odisha's Jajpur district, police said Sunday. According to the complaint filed by the father of the victim, the eight-year-old girl had gone to witness immersion ceremony of Goddess Durga at Rice mill area on Saturday night. "Seeing her alone the accused lured her with giving her chart. He then took the minor girl to an isolated place and raped her there," said Amitabh Mohapatra, inspector-in- charge (IIC) of Jajpur Road police station, quoting the FIR. Hearing the cries of the girl, some puja revellers rushed to the spot and thrashed the accused and informed the local police about the incident. A six-year-old girl, who went missing over a month ago from west Delhi's Kirti Nagar, was traced from Kurukshetra, Haryana and reunited with her parents, police said Sunday. According to a September 7 complaint lodged by girls' father Jogender Mehto, a labourer, his daughter Laxmi was playing near Mazar Railway Line, Kirti Nagar on September 6 afternoon when she went missing. During the search, CCTV cameras installed in the area were analysed, police said. A case was registered against a BJP leader here for alleged violation of the model code of conduct in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, a police official said Sunday. Local BJP leader Surendra Singh Dhankhedhi was booked in connection with an October 15 rally of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Manglia village here, Kshiptra police station in-charge Ajay Kumar Verma told PTI Sunday. A school teacher was killed when a police van hit his motorcycle near Khatma village in Bihar's Vaishali district Sunday, a senior police officer said. The incident occurred when a police van on its way to police line at Hajipur from Mahnar hit the teacher's motorcycle, Superintendent of Police, Manavjit Singh Dhillon said. The SP said the deceased has been identified as Sanjay Singh Rathor, a resident of Muravvarpur village of the district. Action would be taken against the erring driver once a complaint is received from the deceased's family in this regard, the SP said. The son of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council Chairman Ramesh Yadav was found dead at his residence in mysterious circumstances, police said Sunday. Abhijeet Yadav's (22) body was found at his Darul Shafa residence and his family members informed the police, they said. "As of now it seems to be an unnatural death... Whether the death is natural or not will be clear only after the post-mortem examination is conducted," a Lucknow Police official said. He also said a mark resembling that of strangulation was also visible on the neck, but the police were awaiting the post-mortem examination report. A man travelling in a Delhi-bound private bus was arrested in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh after nearly 650 grams charas was found in his possession, police said Sunday. Accused Hitesh Singh, resident of Faridabad in Haryana, was arrested Saturday during a routine check in the Bhuntar police station area in Kullu, they said. A woman was raped and an iron rod was inserted in her private parts allegedly by a relative angry over a land dispute with her family in Jalpaiguri district of West Bengal, police said Sunday. The woman has been admitted to Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital and stated to be in serious condition. A 48-year-old shopkeeper was arrested for allegedly storing 256 kilogram of firecrackers without permission to earn heavy profit, police said Sunday. The accused, Dal Chand, had stored firecrackers at his house in west Delhi's Raghubir Nagar without any permission or licence, they added. The station house officers (SHOs) of west district have been directed to ensure no illegal crackers are sold in the area, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (west) Monika Bhardwaj. Police learnt about firecrackers being stored in a residential area and a raid was conducted, she said. Subsequently, 256 kilogram of firecrackers were seized and the accused was arrested.
Iranian saffron weighing around 20 kg and valued at Rs 47.4 lakh was seized at the international airport here and one person arrested in this connection, customs department said Sunday. Acting on a tip off, customs sleuths intercepted a passenger who arrived from Dubai Sunday and recovered 19.75 kgs of grade I Iranian Saffron worth Rs 47.4 lakh from him under provisions of Customs Act, 1962. The press release issued by the department said, smuggling of saffron has been on the rise due to high price of the Indian variety and high import duty. A 35-year-old tribal woman died Sunday after she fell into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, police said. The deceased was identified as Suffera Begum, a Gujjar. She was a resident of Malat Chilli in Gandoh tehsil. At the time of the accident, Begum was collecting fodder near her house when she accidentally slipped from a hillock and fell into a 40-feet-deep gorge, said Assistant Superintendent of Police, Bhadarwah, Rajinder Singh.
