UP govt gives job to Vivek Tiwari's wife

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma, on Thursday, handed over an appointment letter for a government job to Kalpana Tiwari, the wife deceased Apple executive Vivek Tiwari.Last month, Tiwari was allegedly shot dead by a patrolling constable in Lucknow for refusing to stop his car.Speaking to ANI, the Deputy Chief Minister said, "I have been in contact with the family since the day this unfortunate incident took place. Trai Chief RS Sharma -- who had created a stir by making public his Aadhaar number and challenging others to show how it can be misused -- says he continues to believe that the disclosure of 12-digit identifier does not raise anyone's digital vulnerability. In an interview to PTI, Sharma also said the recent Supreme Court judgement on Aadhaar has firmly settled the debate around issues such as privacy. SC declines plea seeking guidelines to deal with PILs

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to consider a submission seeking laying down fresh guidelines for hearing public interest litigations (PILs). A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was urged by former Solicitor General and senior advocate Ranjit Kumar that there should be guidelines for dealing with PILs as usually some people or organisation move the court, representing the entire country and a sweeping order is passed. Kumar referred to the apex court orders in the 2G and coal block allocation scam cases and told the bench, which also comprised justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, that the orders cancelling allocations were passed without taking note of the ramifications on parties which were not heard. 21-yr-old man for 'abducting and raping' a 3-yr-old girl: GRP official

The Government Railway Police has arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly raping a three-year-old girl after abducting her, while she was sleeping with her mother on a Jodhpur railway station platform, an official said Thursday. Jodhpur railway police station in-charge Ravindra Bothra said his men swung into action and arrested the accused, Kailash Chand in the middle of the act with the toddler in bushes near the station, soon after he abducted her. The police also recovered the baby, who was found in a bad shape, and sent her to hospital for treatment, he said. Terror suspect in Bengaluru blasts held in Kerala's Kannur

A suspect in the 2008 Bengaluru serial blasts, who has been evading arrest all these years, has been arrested from a forest in Kannur district of Kerala, police said Thursday. He has been identified as Salim (42), a suspected Indian Mujahideen operative, they said. "Only thing we can say right now is that we have kept (detained) one person from Kerala and he has been produced before the court. Thereafter we are requesting police custody to question him, " additional commissioner of police (crime) Alok Kumar told PTI. Apple executive case: UP Dy CM gives job appointment letter to deceased's wife

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma Thursday handed over an appointment letter for a government job to Kalpana Tiwari, the wife of Apple executive Vivek Tiwari who was shot dead by a police constable last month. Sharma visited the residence of Kalpana and gave her the appointment letter for a job in the Nagar Nigam, a government spokesman said. On the occasion, Kalpana said, "I think the probe in the case is moving in the right direction. I am satisfied with it till now." Vivek, 38, was shot dead by Constable Prashant Chaudhary in the Gomti Nagar Extension area here when he was on his way to drop an ex-colleague home in his SUV. Chaudhary, however, claimed he pulled the trigger as Tiwari tried to run him over thrice to kill him. SC to hear tomorrow plea against WB govt's decision to grant Rs 28 cr to Durga puja committees

The Supreme Court will hear Friday the petition challenging the West Bengal government's decision to dole out Rs 28 crore to 28,000 puja committees in the state for Durga Puja celebrations. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was apprised that on Wednesday the Calcutta High Court had refused to interfere with the Mamata Banerjee government's decision to grant Rs 10,000 each to 28,000 puja committees in the state. The bench, also comprising Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph, was told by lawyer P V Dinesh that the decision of the state government was against the established principle of law and an urgent hearing was needed on the plea. MLA murder case: D P Yadav to undergo surgery on Oct 19, hospital tells SC

The Supreme Court on Thursday was apprised by a super-speciality hospital here that Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav, facing life term in the MLA murder case, would undergo spinal surgery on October 19. Yadav was awarded life imprisonment by a Dehradun CBI court in 2015 for his role in the murder of Mahendra Singh Bhati, an MLA from Ghaziabad's Dadri area. The lawmaker was shot dead at Dadri railway crossing in December 1992. Thai authorities to deport 70 Pakistani asylum seekers

Thai authorities have convicted 70 Pakistani asylum seekers of staying illegally in Thailand despite their protestations that they face persecution if they are sent home. The Taling Chan Provincial Court on Thursday issued fines and up to two-month suspended jail sentences to the group, which was charged with overstaying their visas and illegal entry. An officer in charge of the case said they will be held in a detention center until they are deported. One of the defendants said the group consists mostly of Christian Pakistanis and some Ahmadi Muslims, and that members of the two religious groups risk persecution in Pakistan. Court orders framing of charges against AAP MLA for rioting, outraging modesty of woman

A Delhi court ordered framing of charges against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Dinesh Mohaniya Thursday for allegedly outraging the modesty of a woman and rioting in the Govindpuri area here in 2016. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal said "prima facie" there were enough evidence to put the AAP politician and his associate, Yovan Sharma, on trial. "I have no reason to believe at this stage, considering the statements of the victims that the allegations are groundless," the judge said. According to the police, in March 2016, both the accused, along with their supporters, had entered the house of a man, assaulted him and outraged the modesty of a female family member in the Govindpuri area of south Delhi. The court directed framing of charges against Mohaniya under sections 452 (house-trespass), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 147 (rioting) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Self-styled Hisar godman, 26 followers held guilty in two murder cases

A self-styled godman of Satlok Ashram at Barwala in Hisar was convicted Thursday along with 26 of his followers by a sessions court here in two separate cases of murder and other offences. Hisar Additional District and Sessions Judge D R Chaliya held godman Rampal and his followers guilty of two murders and other offences, including wrongful confinement of his victims at his hermitage. ASJ Chaliya pronounced his judgement after nearly four-year-long trial of the 27 accused in a makeshift court inside the Hisar district jail, where 67-year-old Rampal and his followers have been lodged since their arrest in November 2014. After holding the accused guilty in two cases, the judge slated October 16 and 17 respectively to pronounce the quantum of sentences for them in the two cases. The two cases against Rampal and his followers were lodged at Barwala police station on November 19, 2014. IT officials 'beaten up' during raid at oil mill owner's house

Officials of the Income Tax Department (ITD) were allegedly assaulted while carrying out a raid at the house of an oil mill owner in Morena town of Madhya Pradesh, police said. Police registered a first information report (FIR) against Govind Bansal, the owner of Surajbhan Oil Mill here, and three members of his family Thursday. The ITD team has been carrying out searches at the Bansal family's house in Jiwajiganj area and other properties since Tuesday for suspected tax evasion, police said. Superintendent of Police Amit Sanghi said the FIR was registered on the complaint of Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax Vikram Pagharia who was heading the ITD team. Five cops injured after villagers pelt stones

Angry villagers Thursday pelted stones on a police team which had gone to arrest a person accused of harassing a girl here, injuring five policemen, officials said. A case has been registered against 100 people under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Law, Superintendent of Police (rural) Alok Sharma said.
