The body of a seven-year-old girl was found stuffed in a gunny bag on the roof of a mosque in Muradnagar town here on Sunday, police said. The girl went missing from her house on Saturday at around 1 pm. Her family lodged a complaint at Murad Nagar police station, Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Krishna said. The gunny bag was spotted on the mosque's roof by a man, Suleman, who went there after offering prayers at around 6.30 am, he said. Suleman saw the girl's body inside and immediately informed her family and the neighbours, he added. After receiving the information, the deceased's father and police reached the spot, the SSP said, adding that the girl was strangled to death. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, he added. The girl's father accused the local councilor, Azaaz Baig, of killing his daughter due to political rivalry. At least 10 workers of a firecracker factory were injured after a major fire broke out in West Bengal's Gobindapur in South 24 Parganas district.Following the incident, the police detained one employee of the factory. Enraged over an issue of a mobile phone with his sister, a 17-year-old boy allegedly shot himself dead with a country-made pistol on Sunday in Dwarka's Bindapur area, police said. The deceased was identified as Gulshan, they said. Police were informed about the incident at 6.18 am by the hospital authorities. The injured was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, police said, adding that he had suffered a gunshot wound. It is suspected that the shot was fired from a very close range, a senior police official said. Police also found four live cartridges in Gulshan's pocket. Three persons, including two minors, were hacked to death by a man in Rohtas district, police said Sunday. Sunil Kumar Yadav attacked Lalsa Devi with a hoe in front of her house killing her on the spot at Mirzapur village under the jurisdiction of Tilauthu police station on Saturday, the police said. The accused had some old enmity with Daroga Yadav, the husband of Lalsa Devi, a police officer. The attacker also killed two children, who were playing nearby and the two were not related to the deceased woman, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Rohtas, Satyavir Singh, said. Sunil Kumar Yadav also attacked a schoolgirl and her mother, and injured them, the SP said. The bodies of the deceased were sent to Sasaram Sadar hospital for post-mortem examination, the police officer said. An investigation has been initiated on the basis of an FIR lodged by a relative of one of the deceased minors, the SP said, adding that the prime accused is absconding.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has disposed of a plea that claimed the city police had not paid water bills to the tune of over Rs 232 crore. The green panel disposed of the plea after it was informed that the amount had already been paid to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC). A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel said since the bill and the cess have already been paid, the matter has become "infructuous". "The case of the applicant is that if the water bills are paid, the Delhi Jal Board can pay the water cess amount to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee, and the said amount can be utilised for restoration of the environment. "The stand of the Delhi Police and Delhi Jal Board as well as the Delhi Pollution Control Committee is that the amount of cess has already been paid vide the letter date February 23, 2016, by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) to the DPCC. A block development officer was caught for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe to release money for the construction of a well, a Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau official said Sunday. BDO Sunil Wamanrao Ahire had demanded Rs 10,000 as bribe from a person who had applied for a grant from the Yeola Panchayat to construct a well under the government's Employment Guarantee Scheme, the official said. The grant had been sanctioned by the Panchayat Samiti and Ahire demanded the bribe to release its second instalment, he informed. "Following a complaint, a trap was laid Saturday at a tea stall on the Yeola-Nashik Road and Ahire was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe of Rs 10,000," he said. Three persons, including a junior engineer and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police, were arrested by Odisha's anti-graft vigilance sleuths for allegedly accepting bribes. Rashmi Ranjan Behera, Junior Engineer in Rayagada Municipality, was caught red-handed by vigilance officers while accepting Rs 50,000 bribe from a man on Saturday to prepare bills relating to construction of a community toilet, a vigilance statement said. Two persons have been arrested from Dwarka's Chhawla for allegedly snatching mobile phones and cash from pedestrians and cyclists, police said on Sunday. The accused, Nikesh Maan (25), and Surender Kumar (23), both residents of Najafgarh in outer Delhi were arrested on Saturday from Deenpur Chowk, they said. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed a committee, formed to monitor the cleaning of the Yamuna, to look into alleged illegal constructions on the floodplains of the river. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the monitoring committee, comprising retired expert member B S Sajwan and former Delhi chief secretary Shailaja Chandra, to consider the matter. "This tribunal, vide order dated July 26, 2018, constituted a committee to look into the issues which arise out of order of this tribunal dated January 13, 2015, in the Manoj Mishra case. Two suspected gamblers in Nepal have jumped to death from the third floor of a building during a police raid, officials said Sunday. The Metropolitan Police of Kathmandu arrested 24 gamblers and seized Rs 458,000 from the gambling den in Mulpani area. Saroj Ghale and Som Lal Tamang jumped from the window of the third floor to escape the police and injured themselves. Extra-judicial confession is a "weak piece of evidence", but can be acted upon to convict a person if a court is satisfied that it was voluntary, the Supreme Court has said. A bench of justices R Banumathi and Indira Banerjee said in cases of extra-judicial confession, courts must ensure that the same inspires confidence and was corroborated by other prosecution evidence. "If the court is satisfied that the extra-judicial confession is voluntary, it can be acted upon to base the conviction," the apex court said, adding, "extra-judicial confession of accused need not in all cases be corroborated". The bench noted in its verdict that it was well settled that a conviction could be based on a voluntarily confession, but rule of prudence requires that wherever possible, it should be corroborated by independent evidence. A police inspector and a constable were allegedly shot dead by five SUV-borne "miscreants" at Beswa village under Fathepur police station area of Sikar district, the police said Sunday. Fathepur police station in-charge Mukesh Kanungo and Constable Ram Prakash were shot dead when they began chasing the miscreants after they sped past a police barricade ignoring signals to stop the vehicle for a routine check up, said Sharma. He said the two policemen were on a routine duty at the check post near Beswa village, when one Ajay Chaudhary and his four associates approached the police barricade in a sports utility vehicle.
