BJP toppled Cong govt in MP by purchasing MLAs, Rahul alleges in poll rally

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday accused the BJP of toppling his party's government in Madhya Pradesh in 2020 by purchasing MLAs, and expressed confidence that the grand old party would win around 150 seats in the assembly elections in the state to be held on November 17. He was addressing an election rally in Vidisha, around 55 km from the state capital. "A storm is going to come in favour of the Congress. The party will be winning 145 to 150 seats. Five years back, you (people) elected a Congress government but BJP leaders (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi, (MP Chief Minister) Shivraj Singh and (Union Home Minister) Amit Shah purchased the MLAs and stole your government," Gandhi said. The Kamal Nath-led Congress dispensation, which was in power in Madhya Pradesh for 15 months till March 2020, waived farm loans of 27 lakh farmers. But by toppling that government, the BJP deceived labourers, farmers, small traders and unemployed people, he alleged. The Congress ousted the BJP

Congress to benefit on MP assembly seats from Rahul's Bharat Jodo Yatra

The Congress is hoping to reap electoral dividends in 21 Madhya Pradesh assembly seats covered by its leader Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra last year as the opposition party aims to return to power in a state where it lost its government midway. In May this year, the Congress hailed the Bharat Jodo Yatra for the party's success in the Karnataka assembly polls, having won 15 of the 20 assembly constituencies in the state the Gandhi-led foot march passed through. Now, the Congress is expecting a similar result in Madhya Pradesh, where voting will be held in a single phase for 230 assembly seats on November 17. Last month, when the Congress won a majority in the elections to the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Kargil, the party said it was a direct impact of Gandhi's padyatra. During the Madhya Pradesh leg of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, the former Congress president walked 380 km through 21 assembly seats across six districts of the Malwa-Nimar region -- Burhanpur, ..

Cong, BJP look for pole position in Kamal Nath's turf in MP's Chhindwara

Madhya Pradesh Congress president Kamal Nath, whose tenure as chief minister ended abruptly in March 2020, is making a renewed attempt to bring his party to power in the state, but is facing a tough challenge from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for his own election from home turf of Chhindwara. The 76-year-old Congress veteran, the sitting MLA from Chhindwara who projects himself as an ardent 'Hanuman bhakt', is pitted against BJP candidate Vivek Bunty Sahu, a 'Shiv bhakt', in the November 17 assembly polls. Both of them also locked horns in the 2018 assembly polls when Nath trounced Sahu (44) by a margin of 25,837 votes. Since then, Sahu, renominated from the seat by the ruling party and backed by the well-oiled BJP organisational machinery, is seeking to avenge his defeat. The BJP candidate is a former Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha president for Chhindwara district and is well aware of the star constituency's voter profile and caste combinations. The saffron party is leaving no

BJP goes easy on age, turns to warhorses to retain power in Madhya Pradesh

When it nominated seven MPs, including three Union ministers, and a general secretary for Madhya Pradesh assembly elections and organised whirlwind tours of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP left no room for doubt about its singular resolve to retain power in the state at any cost. Behind its high-decibel campaign, powered by well-organised party machinery, the BJP also appears to have made a slight departure from its next generation' approach to stay ahead of an aggressive Congress and enhance its prospects of securing a majority of seats. The saffron party seems to have gone a bit easy over age this time by fielding 14 candidates who are 70-plus, with the oldest being 80. In contrast, the opposition Congress has fielded nine septuagenarians for the November 17 polls. According to political observers, BJP's move to go with warhorses could be the fallout of its drubbing in the Karnataka elections where it apparently picked younger candidates over old-timers like former chief ...

Modi government made country secure by stopping infiltration: Amit Shah

Union home minister Amit Shah on Saturday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the country secure by stopping infiltration which the opposition's INDIA grouping or the Congress party are incapable of doing. The BJP leader was speaking at a public meeting in Manawar assembly constituency in Dhar district of Madhya Pradesh ahead of the November 17 assembly elections. Modi has made our country infiltration-free and secured it. Recently, the NIA launched raids across the country and cracked down heavily on Rohingya infiltration. Can the INDI alliance stop infiltration? Can the Congress party stop it?" he asked. The Modi government banned the Popular Front of India (PFI) and made Kashmir an integral part of the country by abrogating Article 370, Shah said. "At that time Rahul Baba (Congress leader Rahul Gandhi) used to say that if Article 370 is removed, blood will flow through the streets of the (Kashmir) valley. But neither blood flowed, nor anyone did dare pelt stones," he ...

From 'Maaf karo Maharaj' to 'Saath hai Shivraj', slogans MP saw in 5 yrs

As campaigning for the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections rises to a fever pitch, witty slogans and catchphrases that have the ability to travel far and wide, particularly in the age of social media, do not seem to dominate the discourse as they did in earlier elections. Maaf karo Maharaj, hamara neta Shivraj' (sorry Maharaj, our leader is Shivraj) was a big hit in the 2018 state polls when the BJP targeted Jyotiraditya Scindia, a scion of erstwhile Gwalior royalty who is affectionately called Maharaj' by his supporters. With changing political equations following Scindia's switch to the BJP in 2020, which led to the collapse of the Kamal Nath-led Congress government in MP, the saffron party's favourite slogan underwent a tweak. When Scindia joined the BJP on March 11, 2020, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan wrote on X (then Twitter), Swagat hai Maharaj, saath hai Shivraj (welcome Maharaj, Shivraj is with you). BJP brains had coined Shriman Bantadhar (Mr Spoiler) for former Congr
