Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Monday inaugurate the 17th edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas convention in Madhya Pradesh's Indore city. Facing the challenge of retaining the status of India's tiger state, Madhya Pradesh lost 34 big cats in 2022 as compared to just 15 in Karnataka, its nearest competitor in housing the number of tigers in the country, according to official data. A senior forest department official said it is a mystery as to why Madhya Pradesh has recorded higher tiger deaths than the southern state though both had almost the same number of big cats as per the 2018 count. The Madhya Pradesh government announced on Tuesday that it will provide plots of land free of cost to the families which do not own a house. The announcement by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at a cabinet meeting came when Assembly elections are only a year away in the BJP-ruled state. The scheme, named the Mukhyamantri Bhu Adhikar Yojna, will be introduced in Tikamgarh district from Wednesday and later in other parts of the state, he was quoted as saying in an official release.
