ICMR conducts study on India's first fatal case of monkeypox from Kerala

The first fatal case of monkeypox in India highlights the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion to diagnose the viral disease in those presenting with atypical manifestations, exanthematous fever with epidemiological linkage from endemic or outbreak countries, according to an ICMR study. The study, 'A fatal case of monkeypox virus infection from Kerala India 2022' has been published as pre-print and has not been peer reviewed. So far, 11 cases of monkeypox have been reported in India -- five from Kerala and six from Delhi. A 22-year-old apparently immunocompetent male with no significant past medical history was admitted in an unconscious state to a private hospital in Kerala following a single episode of acute onset generalized tonic-clonic seizures, the study stated. The patient developed fever, headache on July 15 while in the UAE followed by development of painful right inguinal lymphadenopathy with pus discharge for which he had sought medical care on July 19. First US death from monkeypox confirmed in Los Angeles County: Officials

A Los Angeles County resident with a compromised immune system has died from monkeypox, local health officials announced Monday. It's believed to be the first U.S. fatality from the disease. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced the cause of death, and a spokesperson said it was confirmed by an autopsy. The patient was severely immunocompromised and had been hospitalised. No other information on the person was released. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tracks cases and has not confirmed any U.S. deaths from the disease. LA County officials say they worked with the CDC on their case. A CDC spokesperson confirmed the cooperation but did not immediately respond when asked if this was the first U.S. death. Texas public health officials on Aug. 30 reported the death of a person who had been diagnosed with monkeypox. The person was severely immunocompromised and their case is under investigation to determine what role monkeypox may have played in thei

Monkeypox vaccine expected to induce robust immune response, says study

The recommended vaccinia virus (VACV)-based vaccines will mount a robust immune response against the monkeypox virus observed in the current outbreak, according to a study. Vaccinia virus is a large, complex, enveloped virus belonging to the poxvirus family. Since the new virus was first observed in early May, over 52,000 cases have been confirmed in more than 90 countries and regions, the researchers said. The team undertook genomic research to find out if the genetic mutations observed in monkeypox virus observed in the current outbreak (MPXV-2022) may affect vaccine-induced immune responses against the disease. "Specific VACV-based vaccines have demonstrated high efficacy against monkeypox viruses in the past and are considered an important outbreak control measure," said Matthew McKay, from the University of Melbourne, Australia. "However, given this is a novel monkeypox virus, we still lack scientific data on how well human immune responses triggered by VACV-based vaccines wi
