IPL 2024: '...Hand on my shoulders' - Hardik Pandya on Rohit's role in MI

Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya on Monday said his predecessor Rohit Sharma will continue to be a guiding force for him during the IPL despite the unexpected change of leadership that the franchise announced ahead of the upcoming season. Pandya, who led Gujarat Titans in the past two seasons, is back at Mumbai Indians as captain for the 2024 edition. Having led Mumbai Indians to five titles, Rohit was surprisingly replaced by Pandya going into the 2024 edition. "It will not be any different, he will always be there to help me. This team, what it has achieved, it has achieved under him and I just have to carry forward that. He is going to have his hand on my shoulders," said Pandya in a media interaction here. "We respect fans but we focus on the sport and what is required. I focus on the controllables, fans have every right and I respect their opinion," he replied when asked about the fans' outrage at Rohit's removal. The star all-rounder will be making his comeback to top-lev

IPL 2024: Mumbai Indians waiting for update on Suryakumar Yadav's fitness

Hardik Pandya's bid to hasten his comeback towards the business end of last year's ODI World Cup game actually aggravated his ankle injury and in the process delayed his possible return by five months. Pandya had twisted his ankle trying to stop the ball on his follow-through during India's fourth World Cup game against Bangladesh in Pune on October 19. Initially, he had eyed a comeback during home T20Is versus Afghanistan but after a prolonged rehabilitation, his comeback vehicle turns out to be upcoming IPL -- a cash-rich league that catapulted the colourful Baroda all-rounder into instant stardom around a decade back. "My injury was a freak one. It had nothing to do with my past injuries or my fitness. I tried to stop the ball and twisted my ankle. When I got injured, my injury from day one clearly showed that I would be out of the World Cup," Pandya said during a media interaction organised by Mumbai Indians here on Monday. Pandya was itching to make a comeback by semi-finals b

IPL 2024: Rehab on track but will Surya be available for MI's first game?

India's ace T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav is currently undergoing rehabilitation at Bengaluru's National Cricket Academy post an ankle surgery but it is still not clear whether he will be available for the first two games of the Mumbai Indians in the upcoming Indian Premier League. Mumbai Indians will start its campaign on Sunday, March 24, against last year's runners-up Gujarat Titans, and it is a race against time for the world No. 1 T20 batter, who is working hard at the NCA to get back to peak match fitness. "Surya's rehabilitation is on track and he will certainly 'Return to Play' in the IPL itself. However it is still not clear whether the NCA's Sports Science and Medical Team will give clearance to play in the first two away games against Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad (March 27)," a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity. WPL 2024: Mumbai Indians crush UPW by 42 runs to extract sweet revenge

Mumbai Indians extracted sweet revenge on UP Warriorz, defeating them by 42 runs to climb to the second spot in the standings of the Women's Premier League here on Thursday. Opting to bat, MI overcame early jitters to post a decent 160/6. While Nat Sciver-Brunt (45 off 31) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (33 off 30) added 59 off 46 balls for the third wicket to steady MI's ship, the innings got impetus due to Amelia Kerr (39 not out off 23 balls) and rising star Sajeevan Sajana's (22 not out off 14 balls) knocks. The duo added 43 in 4.2 overs towards the end. UPW struggled in their chase, finding runs difficult to come by as they could manage 118 for nine. The win was a sweet revenge for MI who lost by seven wickets against UPW on February 28 in Bengaluru. UPW's problems compounded when they lost three key wickets -- skipper Alyssa Healy, Kiran Navgire and Chamari Athapaththu -- inside the first five overs for just 15 runs. UPW never really recovered from the torrid start as the ask

Shabnim Ismail bowls fastest delivery in women's cricket, breaches 130kph

South African pacer Shabnim Ismail created history by bowling the fastest delivery ever recorded in women's cricket, breaching the 130kph barrier for the first time since the introduction of speed guns. Playing for Mumbai Indians in their Women's Premier League (WPL) match against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Ismail shattered the record by clocking 132.1km/h (82.08mph), her thunderbolt smashing into the pad of former Australia captain Meg Lanning. It was the second ball of the third over of the match on Tuesday, prompting the MI players to appeal in unison, only to be turned down by the umpire. Ismail, who appeared for South Africa in all eight previous ICC Women's T20 World Cups and only retired from international cricket following last year's tournament on home soil, had previously been clocked as bowling at 128km/h (79.54mph) against the West Indies in 2016 and at 127km/h twice during the most recent edition of the Women's World Cup in 2022. When asked during a ..
