The Odisha cabinet on Thursday approved a proposal to bring lime stone under the purview of Long-Term Linkage (LTL) policy, in a bid to streamline its supply to the industries of the state. These industries will henceforth be getting their lime stone supply through Odisha Mining Corporation Limited (OMC), said Chief Secretary SC Mohapatra. The proposal to bring lime stone under the LTL policy was put forth by Industrial Development Corporation Of Odisha Limited, which has been merged with OMC, Mohapatra explained. Maintaining that the move will enhance limestone production and ensure its optimum utilisation, Mohapatra said the state exchequer, in turn, will be benefited. The cabinet, during the day, also approved financial bids for construction of 40 Lift Irrigation Schemes with intake points on different rivers in the districts of Keonjhar, Kalahandi, Bolangir, Bargarh, Gajpati, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Angul and Cuttack. These projects will be executed with an investment of Rs 1879.61

Senior Odisha BJP leader Bishnu Charan Sethi passed away on Monday at a state-run hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for kidney-related ailments. He was 61. The deputy leader in assembly was admitted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar on August 16. "He had developed lung infection and suffered brain haemorrhage. However, the end came due to acute cardiac failure," AIIMS-Bhubaneswar Superintendent S N Mohanth told reporters. A two-time legislator from Bhadrak district, Sethi was the sitting MLA from the Dhamnagar assembly segment. Sethi is survived by his wife. Governor Ganeshi Lal and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik were among a host of leaders who expressed condolence at Sethi's demise. With his death, BJP has lost two of its 23 lawmakers elected to the assembly following the 2019 elections. Earlier, Balasore MLA Madanmohan Dutta had passed away in 2020.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved a proposed master plan on Saturday for the development of the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology in Sambalpur as a centre of excellence. The VSSUT in western Odisha will be developed as a multidisciplinary engineering and research university by 2030. It will be at par with the country's premier engineering institutes like the Indian Institutes of technology and the national institutes of technology. Around Rs 2,000 crore will be spent in three phases. Arrangements will be made for 10,864 students to study in 24 undergraduate departments by 2026. Currently, 2,849 students are studying in various courses, according to the Chief Minister's Office. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has drawn the attention of the Centre to the fact that over 160 proposals of the state government for inclusion of communities in the Scheduled Tribe list of Odisha, remain unaddressed since decades. Since 1978 onwards, Odisha government has recommended more than 160 communities for their inclusion in the ST list of the state with the approval of Tribal Advisory Council. Because of the delay in their inclusion in the ST list, all these 160 plus communities of the state are becoming victims of "historical injustice", Patnaik said in a letter to Union Minister of Tribal Affairs Arjun Muda on Friday. Odisha's COVID-19 tally rose to 13,31,586 on Saturday as 233 more people, including 34 children, tested positive for the infection, a health bulletin said. The state had recorded 214 infections on Friday. Odisha's coronavirus death toll remained unchanged at 9,186 as no fresh fatality was reported. Besides, 53 other patients have died due to comorbidities so far, it said. The state now has 1,630 active cases, while 13,20,717 patients have recovered from the disease to date, including 267 in the last 24 hours. The daily positivity rate was at 1.63 per cent as 14,314 samples were tested for the infection in the last 24 hours.
With the Odisha government stressing the need for simplification of enrolment for Aadhaar and its usage, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on Friday said that district-level committees would be formed in the state for the purpose. Aadhaar registration in the age group of 18 and above is reaching 100 per cent in Odisha, UIDAI Chief Executive Officer Dr Saurav Garg said while attending a workshop on Aadhaar uses here. Odisha is a lead and robust user state of Aadhaar data. District level committees would be formed for monitoring proper use and enrolment of Aadhaar, he said. Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday said Odisha will get 5G service along with other cities in the first phase of its launch. Odisha will have access to 5G telecom service in the very first phase. It will provide users 10 times the speed of 4G, he said on the sidelines of a programme here. Around 13 cities are likely to get 5G telecom service across the country in the first phase. Vaishnaw also downplayed apprehensions over the radiation impact of 5G. The radiation from 5G is much below the WHO-recommended levels, he said. During an interactive session with students, the minister said the Centre has asked telecom operators to improve the quality of their service. He said a 5G lab has been developed at IIT-Madras. Vaishnaw also said India is looking at developing hydrogen-powered trains by 2023. The Railways is trying to connect the remote and unconnected areas of the country through its Gati Shakti' policy, and work on this is on the fast track, he added.

The government put on sale 10 coal mines under the commercial coal mine auction on Tuesday and Wednesday. "On the 2nd day of the e-auction today , two coal mines were put up for auction of which both coal mines were MMDR coal mines," the coal ministry said in a statement. The blocks were auctioned under the second attempt of the fourth round of commercial coal mine auction.
