Probably winning Telangana, certainly winning MP, Chhattisgarh: Rahul

Exuding confidence about a good showing in the upcoming assembly polls, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday said that as of now the Congress is certainly winning Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, probably winning Telangana, and there is a "very close" contest in Rajasthan which the party believes it will emerge victorious in. Gandhi also referred to the row over BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri's derogatory remarks against BSP leader Danish Ali in Lok Sabha, alleging that the BJP indulges in such tactics to distract from the demand for a caste census. He asserted that the opposition is adapting and working together and the BJP is "in for a surprise in 2024" general elections. Speaking at a conclave organised by the Pratidin Media Network of Assam, Gandhi also said the idea of 'One Nation, One Election' was aimed at distracting from real issues of the people. "It's one of the BJP's distraction strategies," he asserted. The main issues in India are concentration of wealth, huge inequality in

Oppn parties are group of people greedy for power: UP Dy-CM Brajesh Pathak

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Brajesh Pathak has attacked opposition parties, saying they are a "group of people greedy for power", and exuded confidence that his party will win all the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state in the 2024 general elections. The people are with the BJP and have great faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and he will return to power for a third consecutive term, he said. In an interview with PTI, Pathak asserted that the BJP will wrest the Rai Bareli Lok Sabha seat from the Congress -- currently represented by Sonia Gandhi -- as well as win Mainpuri -- a Samajwadi Party (SP) stronghold represented by Dimple Yadav, the wife of party chief Akhilesh Yadav. "Rahul and Priyanka (Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra) will not be able to do any miracle in the Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh. People here do not take Rahul Gandhi seriously," he said. "In Uttar Pradesh, the account of the Congress and the entire opposition w

AAP to go it alone in 2024 Haryana Assembly polls, says Anurag Dhanda

The AAP will fight the 2024 Haryana Assembly polls on its own, its state unit vice-president Anurag Dhanda said on Friday, saying the party has a complete organisational structure ready and will soon announce its village-level committees too. Dhanda, however, said for the Lok Sabha election, there has been no discussion on seat sharing among the INDIA opposition bloc members yet. "For the Assembly polls, there will be no compromise, no tie-up and the AAP will contest all 90 seats on its own. For the Lok Sabha, we will abide by the orders of the party high-command," he told reporters here. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was asked about senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda's recent remarks that his party is capable of winning both the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls on its own. He had also said the Congress will contest all the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana in next year's general election. The former Haryanca chief minister had claimed that the AAP has no base in the ...

Ruling TMC hails high court relief to Abhishek, Oppn reserves comments

The ruling Trinamool Congress on Friday hailed a Calcutta High Court judgement granting relief to party leader Abhishek Banerjee, by ruling against coercive action by the Enforcement Directorate while conducting its probe into the state's school jobs scam. Opposition Congress and ruling CPI(M) reserved comments on Calcutta High Court's order about TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee but the TMC hailed the judgements. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "The judgement shows the central agencies have been hounding and harassing Banerjee, as he is one of the key forces behind the battle against BJP's communal and hatred-filled brand of politics." "The court has restrained ED from harassing Abhishek further. He is helping in the probe and we know he will continue to assist the investigators. We all know real truth will come out," Ghosh said, adding TMC believes law will take its own course. Congress leader Adhir Choudhury told reporters Banerjee's trial continues and till he is acquitted by th

All-party meet: Oppn dubs bill on EC appointments as anti-Constitutional

Several opposition leaders on Sunday criticised the bill on the appointment and service conditions of the chief election commissioner and election commissioners at an all-party meeting as "anti-Constitution" and "anti-democratic", sources said. Official sources said there is a rethink in the government on whether to take up the bill for discussion and passage in the five-day session, beginning Monday. The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023 had featured among the four bills listed by the government a few days back for being taken up in the session. However, criticism, including from a few former CECs and ECs, of some of its provisions might have made the government to reconsider its decision. "We are yet to take a final call," a source said when asked if the government will push for its passage during the session. The bill seeks to replace the Chief Justice of India with a cabinet minister

Congress leaders call for delaying seat-sharing talks with INDIA bloc

Expressing confidence about the party faring well in the upcoming assembly polls in five states, some Congress leaders on Sunday called for delaying the seat-sharing talks with INDIA bloc partners for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections till November so as to do it from a position of strength, sources said. The call from a section of leaders, particularly those from states where the Congress is directly in contest with some INDIA bloc partners, came while the top party leadership pitched for strengthening the Congress as well as the opposition bloc. Sources said several leaders supported the call to strengthen the Congress organisation and the opposition INDIA alliance during the two-day brainstorming session of the Congress Working Committee, but they asserted that the party should not rush into seat-sharing arrangements with like-minded parties. During the two-day parleys, Sonia Gandhi called for strengthening the INDIA alliance, while Rahul Gandhi said both the Congress party and the ..

DMK trying to divide people on religious lines: BJP after TN min's remarks

The BJP Tamil Nadu unit has slammed State Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy for his remarks that the opposition INDIA alliance was forged as an "opposition to Sanatan ideology," saying the DMK was trying to divide people on religious lines for electoral gains. Parties like the Congress and Left were aiding DMK, the BJP alleged. Ponmudy's remarks show the "cat is out of the bag," the saffron party's TN Vice-President Narayanan Thirupathy said in a social media post. He was responding to a viral video of Ponmudy, a senior DMK leader, at a recent anti-Sanatan Dharma conference here that the multi-party INDIA bloc has been created against Sanatan ideology. "This INDIA (bloc) is an alliance created in opposition to Sanatan ideology. There may be differences of opinion (among its constituents) but there is no divergence in opposing Sanatan. Those (parties) in this (grouping) want to create equality, safeguard minorities, protect gender equality," Ponmudy was heard saying in the ...
