Pak to seek friendship with all and enmity with none: Caretaker FM Jilani

Pakistan's newly appointed caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani has said he would pursue close relationships with all major powers including the US and China, seek better ties with India and further enhance cooperation with the Gulf region. Soon after taking oath as the caretaker foreign minister on Thursday, the 68-year-old veteran diplomat said he would continue to follow a foreign policy evolved through national consensus. Jilani, who served as foreign secretary and Pakistan's ambassador to the US, said there was a national consensus that Pakistan must have a good relationship with the US while maintaining close ties with China. We are clear that Pakistan will not enter into any bloc politics, he told the Express Tribune newspaper. Pakistan has been treading carefully amid intensified US-China rivalry and, at times, has been forced to make difficult choices. Islamabad twice skipped the US President's Democracy Summit in what was seen as a clear effort not to antagonise

Focus on internal matters rather than raising Kashmir issue: India to Pak

India has asked Pakistan to concentrate on addressing its internal matters rather than raising the Kashmir issue and indulging in frivolous allegations against New Delhi. To best utilise this council's time, I suggest the concerned delegation concentrate on addressing their internal matters and restoring order within their own borders, rather than indulging in frivolous allegations against my country, R Madhu Sudan, a Counsellor in India's UN Mission, told members of the Security Council on Thursday. Madhu Sudan was responding to the issue of Kashmir raised by a Pakistani representative during the UN Security Council's Open Debate on Famine and Conflict-Induced Global Food Insecurity. Unfortunately we saw one delegation misuse this forum yet again, to divert the attention of this council from the important topic of food security," he said in his remarks, adding that one delegation consistently sought to exploit various United Nations platforms to further its agenda. BSF intercepts fifth Pakistan drone in four days along IB in Punjab

The Border Security Force intercepted a fifth Pakistani drone in four days that intruded into India from along the International Border (IB) in Punjab to drop a drugs consignment, a force spokesperson said on Tuesday. The flying object was "downed" around 9 pm on Monday in the Amritsar sector in Bhaini Rajputana village of Amritsar district, he said. The BSF recovered the black-coloured drone, a quadcopter of 'DJ Matrice 300 RTK' make, with an attached payload of 2.1 kilogram suspected heroin attached through an iron ring, the spokesperson said. A small torch in switched-on condition was also found attached to the drone so that drugs smugglers could detect the consignment and pick it up from the field on the Indian side, he said. This is the fifth reported interception of a "rogue" unmanned aerial vehicle along the Punjab border since May 19. A few more instances of troops picking up the buzzing sound of a drone were reported over the last four days but nothing more could be ...

Pakistan FM Bilawal Bhutto describes his India visit as a 'success'

Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Friday said his visit to Goa was a "success" as he advocated his country's case on the soil of India. His remarks came hours after his Indian counterpart S Jaishankar accused him of being a "promoter, justifier and a spokesperson of a terror industry." Addressing a press conference after his return from Goa where he attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation's (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) meeting, Bhutto Zardari said his trip to India was a success as it helped to negate the view that every Muslim was a terrorist. We made an attempt at breaking this myth, Bhutto-Zardari said. Jaishankar mounted an offensive against Bhutto-Zardari in his address at the SCO meeting, contending Pakistan foreign minister's statement that terrorism shouldn't be "weaponised for diplomatic point-scoring", in remarks seen as directed at India. Hours later at a press conference, Jaishankar said Bhutto-Zardari's statement on the weaponisati

Amid pressure from IMF, Pak Army chief visits China to further defence ties

Pakistan's Army chief General Asim Munir has arrived in China on a four-day official visit aimed at boosting bilateral defence ties. This is Gen. Munir's fourth overseas visit ever since he took command of the Pakistan Army in November last year. In January, he visited Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE) on his first official visit abroad since his appointment. A month later, he visited the United Kingdom on a highly important visit on Britain's Ministry of Defence invitation to discuss security-related strategic issues. After his UK visit, Gen Munir again visited the UAE. "COAS is on a four-day official visit to China for enhancing bilateral military relations, the army's media wing said in a statement on Monday without providing any further details about the trip. It is common for the new army chief in Pakistan to undertake a visit to China within weeks of his appointment. The delay this time is attributed to the internal situation in Pakistan. No backchannel talks being held between Pakistan and India, says Khar

Pakistan said on Thursday that no backchannel talks were being held between Islamabad and New Delhi. "At this moment, there is no such thing under way," Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar told the Senate - the upper house of parliament. She added that backchannel diplomacy was desirable when it was result-oriented. Separately, Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch at the weekly media briefing reiterated Khar's remarks about no secret diplomatic engagements with India. "There is no backchannel diplomacy between India and Pakistan," Baloch said. Speaking in the Senate, Khar went on to say that Pakistan had always taken initiatives to promote peace in the region but right now, the cross-border hostility [from India] is of a unique type. She said that Pakistan was asked at international forums sometimes to normalise its ties with India, but the world should look at the messages New Delhi was sending to Islamabad. "The messages that we are getting are a

Two Pak intruders shot dead by BSF along Punjab border; guns recovered

Two armed Pakistani intruders were shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) in two separate incidents along the India-Pakistan international border in Punjab on Tuesday morning, officials said. The first infiltration bid was detected in the Gurdaspur sector around 8 am and the troops subsequently recovered the body of a man along with a weapon there. "At about 0830 hours, BSF troops of border post Channa in Gurdaspur sector observed suspected movement of an armed Pak intruder ahead of the fence. "The suspected intruder was challenged and neutralised by the troops," a BSF spokesperson said. The second killing took place near Dariya Mansoor village in Amritsar. "Troops challenged the miscreant, but he did not stop and continued moving ahead. Sensing an imminent threat and to stop further misadventure, BSF troops fired upon the miscreant in self-defence, killing him on the spot. "A gun was found near the body of the Pakistani miscreant and an extensive search of the area is in .

Indo-Pak ties see new low; FM Bhutto's outburst dashes hope for engagements

Pakistan's ties with India, nearly frozen since 2019, touched a new low this year when Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari made an "uncivilised" outburst against the Indian leadership, dashing any hope for the resumption of early engagements between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Pakistan had downgraded its diplomatic relations with India, reducing the presence of diplomatic staff in the Indian capital, and severed trade links following New Delhi's decision to revoke the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August 2019. The only positive development recorded since then has been the restoration of a crucial ceasefire agreement on the highly volatile Line of Control (LoC) in February 2021, which kindled a frail feeling for more such steps in days to come. The ensuing months, however, showed that it was yet another mirage. This year saw no improvement in bilateral ties as India accused Pakistan of cross-border infiltration and re-activation of terror-launching pads near the Lo
