Members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on Tuesday gathered at the historic Central Hall of the old Parliament building for a function to commemorate the rich legacy of the Parliament of India. Addressing the gathering, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the function also commemorates the last sitting of the two Houses in the old building on Monday. The new building has now been designated as the Parliament House of India. He said the Central Hall has been witness to the transfer of power from Britain to Bharat. Joshi also said that our parliamentary journey was marked by excellent achievements, difficult challenges and remarkable milestones. At the function, Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar sat on the dais flanked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Speaker Om Birla. Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress leader in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury were seated on the extreme corners of the stage.

Dressed in colourful attire, members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday got their group photograph clicked in the old Parliament building, hours before legislative proceedings shift to the new Parliament House. New Parliament building now designated as Parliament House of India

The new Parliament building has been designated as the Parliament House of India, a Lok Sabha Secretariat notification said. "The Speaker, Lok Sabha is pleased to notify the new building of Parliament situated in the precincts of the Parliament House on Plot Number 118, New Delhi, east of the existing Parliament House with Raisina road to the south and Red Cross road to the north, to be, hereon, designated as the Parliament House of India," said the notification issued on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led parliamentarians across party lines in bidding farewell to the old Parliament building on Monday. Parliament proceedings will shift to the new building from Tuesday.

Women's Reservation Bill may be tabled in Parl Tuesday, Cong welcomes move

Amid speculation that the women's reservation bill may be tabled in Parliament on Tuesday, the Congress said it welcomes the reported move as the party has been raising the demand for long. "We welcome the reported decision of the Union Cabinet and await the details of the Bill," Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on X. "This could have very well been discussed in the all-party meeting before the Special Session, and consensus could have been built instead of operating under a veil of secrecy," the Congress leader said. He also shared a detailed post he made on Sunday to underline how the Congress has been supporting the move. "The Congress Working Committee has demanded that the Women's Reservation Bill must be passed during the Special Session of Parliament," he said quoting the CWC resolution that was passed at its meeting in Hyderabad this weekend. Amid a demand for the Women's Reservation Bill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the contribution of women parliamentarians has been on the rise over the years. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Modi highlighted the changing composition of the House over the years, saying it had become more inclusive with all sections of society finding representation. "Inclusive atmosphere has kept manifesting the aspirations of the people with full power," he said. The Prime Minister noted the contributions of women parliamentarians that have helped burnish the dignity of the House. Bill on EC appointments may not be taken up in this session: Report

The government may not push for passage of the bill on appointment of CEC and election commissioners in the five-day session of Parliament that began Monday, sources said amid criticism of its provisions including by the opposition and former chief election commissioners. They said one view within the government is to refer the bill to the standing committee on law and justice. The bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on August 10.
