Question for sanitation workers is of 'stomach', not feet:Sena

The Shiv Sena on Tuesday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's gesture of washing the feet of sanitation workers at the Kumbh Mela, but said the question before these people is of their "stomach" and not feet. The remarks came two days after Modi took a dip at the Sangam in Uttar Pradesh and conducted 'charan vandana' (washing the feet) of select sanitation workers as a mark of respect for their efforts in keeping the Kumbh Mela clean. "Modi should be congratulated for washing the feet of sanitation workers, but the question concerning them is not about their feet but their stomach," the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece 'Saamana'. The prime minister's "kar seva" (service with hands) will be successful only when these workers are able to stand on their own feet, the Marathi publication opined. On Sunday, the prime minister also launched the ambitious Rs 75,000-crore Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, by transferring the first

Three prominent leaders of Hamro Sikkim Party (HSP), headed by India's former football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, have resigned, months ahead of the general elections and the assembly polls. HSP's working president Ran Bahadur Subba, former minister K N Upreti and vice-president Tara Shrestha were the ones to quit the party. The three leaders also alleged that Bhutia and his group had taken various decisions, including selection of the party's president, Dr Bina Basnett, in an "arbitrary manner". HSP spokesperson Biraj Adhikari said that the party has accepted their resignations. The HSP spokesperson claimed that the leaders succumbed to allurements offered to them by the Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), led by Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling. Iran's foreign minister resigns as his nuclear deal teeters

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif resigned without warning late Monday, offering an "apology" to the nation as the nuclear deal he negotiated with world powers is on the verge of collapse after the US withdrawal from the accord. Zarif's resignation, if accepted by Iran's relatively moderate President Hassan Rouhani, would leave the cleric without one of his main allies in pushing the Islamic Republic toward further negotiations with the West. It remains unclear why Zarif chose to leave his post now and what effect it will have on the atomic accord, which Iran has been complying with. He likely briefed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei before offering his resignation. Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters, previously backed the American-educated envoy through the nuclear negotiations. "We'll see if it sticks," Secretary of State Mike Pompeo tweeted about Zarif's resignation. "Our policy is unchanged the regime must behave like a normal country and respect ...

'Chilling' testimony promised from Trump's former lawyer

Donald Trump's former lawyer Michael Cohen could stir fresh turmoil for his former boss when he begins three days of testimony before lawmakers Tuesday on the president's murky business and personal affairs. Already facing a three-year prison term for "dirty deeds" he performed at Trump's beckoning, Cohen will face questioning behind closed doors Tuesday at the Senate Intelligence Committee on his work for Trump and the 2016 Trump campaign's ties to Russia -- still a focus of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation. On Wednesday he will appear in public before the House Oversight Committee, and then Thursday will be quizzed in a closed hearing of the House Intelligence Committee. "Michael Cohen is the one person who has accused the president of committing a crime," Elijah Cummings, Democratic chairman of the House Oversight Committee, told NPR. In deference to the Mueller probe, Cummings's panel will not ask Cohen about Russia-related matters. "The president has basically ...

US House to vote on blocking Trump emergency

US House lawmakers on Tuesday are expected to pass a Democratic measure annulling President Donald Trump's declared emergency on the southern border, an effort that appeared to earn growing support among Senate Republicans. Trump's February 15 emergency declaration gives him access to billions of dollars to construct his wall on the Mexican border, beyond the nearly $1.4 billion that Congress allocated for construction of border barriers. But the House of Representatives, run since January by Democrats, has the support necessary to terminate the emergency, dealing a stern rebuke to a president controversially seeking to expand his executive powers. Should the measure clear Congress and reach his desk, Trump would be cornered into issuing the first veto of his presidency, an embarrassing development because the measure seeks to directly rein in the president's authority. The House vote, expected Tuesday afternoon, will serve to "defend our democracy," Speaker Nancy Pelosi told ...
