LS polls: BJP may drop five sitting MPs in Maharashtra

The BJP, which has inked a pre- poll alliance with the Shiv Sena, is likely to replace its five sitting MPs in Maharashtra in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections due to various reasons, including their performance, sources in the party said Thursday. As for the Sena, its MP Anandrao Adsul may not be able to contest the upcoming elections due to his health condition, sources said. "The BJP, which currently has 22 Lok Sabha members in Maharashtra, is set to bring in maximum changes as at least five sitting MPs are unlikely to get another chance in the 2019 general elections," a senior party functionary said. Some of the reasons for changing the sitting MPs include their shortcomings, their performance in Parliament as well as during the various events organised by the party in the last five years, the BJP leader said. "Kirit Somaiya (Mumbai North East), Anil Shirole (Pune), Sharad Bansode (Solapur), Sunil Gaikwad (Latur) and Dilip Gandhi (Ahmednagar) are the five sitting Lok .

Booth level special camp for voter verification, enrollment in AP from Feb 23

A two-day booth level special camp will be organised across the state on February 23 and 24 to encourage voters to cross-check their names in the voter list and apply for corrections, if necessary, said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Gopal Krishna Dwivedi here on Thursday.He has also directed the District Collectors (DCs) and all political parties to depute their booth level members at camps so that if there are any anomalies in the voter list, these can be rectified to avoid any kind of controversy. India to stop its share of water flowing into Pakistan: Gadkari

Union Water Resources Minister Nitin Gadkari said the water of these 'Eastern rivers' will be diverted and supplied to Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab.As per the 1960 Indus Water Treaty governing six common rivers, India has full rights over Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers while Pakistan has full rights over Jhelum, Chenab and Indus.Under the Treaty, Ravi, Beas and Sutlej, all flowing through Punjab, have been described as Eastern rivers and Jhelum, Chenab and Indus, all flowing through Jammu and Kashmir, have been identified as Western rivers."Under the leadership of Hon'ble PM Sri @narendramodi ji, Our Govt. has decided to stop our share of water which used to flow to Pakistan. India Thursday called upon all the members of RCEP, a proposed mega trade deal, to work towards early conclusion of the agreement to boost economic ties. J-K govt to take up matter of polls to vacant seats in state Legislative Council with ECI

The State Administrative Council Thursday approved taking up the matter with the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the proposal for holding of elections to the six vacant seats in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Council. This was approved by the SAC meeting chaired by Governor Satya Pal Malik, an official spokesperson said. Currently, there are two vacancies and seats earmarked for municipalities and four vacancies and seats earmarked for panchayats to be filled by the electorate of the urban local bodies and panchayats, he said. Consequent to the elections of the urban local bodies and panchayats in the state, the electorate is available for electing members of the Legislative Council against the seats earmarked for the urban local bodies and the panchayats.

Pb assembly passes resolution to pay tributes to Lakshman Singh Dharowali

The Punjab Assembly Thursday unanimously passed a resolution to pay tributes to Lakshman Singh Dharowali who launched the 'Gurdwara Sudhar Lehar' in 1921. Moving the resolution in the ongoing Punjab Assembly session, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Brham Mohindra said Dharowali launched the movement on February 21 to free Gurdwaras from the control of 'Mahants'. He took a 'jatha' of 156 Sikhs to Nankana Sahib Gurdwara (now in Pakistan) to free it from the control of Mahants, he said. Dharowali was killed by Mahant Narayan Das and his men at Nankana Sahib, added Mohindra. Lawmakers of all political parties supported the resolution.

CM says govt committed to inclusive development of Manipur

After initial reluctance, Odisha says it will be part of PM-Kisan yojna

Shedding its initial hesitation, the Odisha government Thursday decided to be part of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme and extend all support for its implementation in the state, a top official said. The announcement was made by Chief Secretary A P Padhi after reviewing the state's Krushak Assistance for Livelihood and Income Augmentation (KALIA) scheme, also meant for providing financial assistance to farmers. Padhi said the central scheme (PM-Kisan), which promises to provide Rs 6,000 per annum to small and marginal farmers having cultivable land up to two hectares (about five acres), will be launched in Odisha on February 24 along with other states. BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha Thursday alleged that there was corruption in West Bengal over procurement of paddy from farmers and demanded CBI inquiry into it. The famers were committing suicide in many parts of the state as as they are not receiving proper price of their produce, Sinha claimed. South Africa will extradite Mozambique's ex-finance minister Manuel Chang, held in a Johannesburg jail since December on a US-issued international arrest warrant, a respected news site reported Thursday. Chang, 63, was arrested at Johannesburg's O R Tambo International Airport on December 29 over his alleged involvement in USD 2 billion of fraudulent loans to Mozambican state firms.
