High-pitch campaigning for Jammu LS seat ends

The high-pitch campaigning for the Jammu Lok Sabha seat ended Tuesday with top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, dashing the region to canvass for the party candidate to retain the seat. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also held three election rallies in different parts of Jammu region on Monday. While the star campaigners were missing from the Congress, the party mostly banked on the services of their veteran leaders -- former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and erstwhile 'Sadre-e-Riyasat' (president) and scion of Dogra dynasty Karan Singh. The campaigning for the seat ended peacefully with no untoward incident reported from anywhere in the constituency, poll officials said. Poll campaigning ends in U'khand

Campaigning for Uttarakhand's five Lok Sabha seats going to polls on April 11 came to an end Tuesday, with BJP and Congress top brass, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Rahul Gandhi, addressing a slew of rallies in different parts of the state over the past fortnight. After the end of campaigning at 5 pm Tuesday evening, candidates will not be able to hold rallies to garner support for themselves, Chief Electoral Officer Saujanya said, adding they can go door to door in a peaceful way to contact voters. All preparations for the April 11 polls in all the five Lok Sabha seats are complete, she said. There are a total of 78,56,268 voters in Uttarakhand, including 3,71,220 women. Transgender voters are 259 whereas service voters are 90,845. Haridwar has the highest number of voters at 18,40,732 while Almora has the lowest number of voters at 13,37,803, she said. The highest percentage of voters are in the age group of 30-39 years who constitute 27.4 per cent of voters .

Campaigning ends in 2 LS seats of Meghalaya

Campaigning for the April 11 single phase Lok Sabha elections to Shillong and Tura seats in Meghalaya ended on Tuesday. Voting to the two parliamentary constituencies will be held from 7 am to 5 pm. The by-poll to Selsella assembly constituency will also take place simulateneously. State Chief Electoral Officer Frederick R Kharkongor said, "All arrangements have been made to ensure free and fair election. Polling parties have also been asked to reach the polling stations well in advance," Kharkongor told PTI. Sitting Congress MP Vincent H Pala and five others are contesting in the Shillong seat while a three-cornered contest is on the cards in Tura where Mukul Sangma of the Congress will fight NPP's Agatha Sangma, daughter of former Lok Sabha speaker PA Sangma. Security in the two constituencies has been tightened with deployment of 40 companies of central armed police forces. Over 19 lakh voters are eligible to vote in the two seats.

SC verdict Wednesday on Centre's preliminary objection in Rafale review pleas

The Supreme Court will Wednesday pronounce verdict on the preliminary objections raised by the Centre that the documents on which it was claiming "privilege" cannot be relied upon to re-examine the verdict in the Rafale fighter jet deal with France. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi will pronounce the verdict. On March 14, the apex court had reserved verdict on the preliminary objections raised by the Centre on admissibility of privileged documents annexed by former Union ministers Yashwant Sinha and Arun Shourie as also activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan in their review petition against the top court's December 14 judgement that dismissed all petitions against the Rafale jet deal. "Only after we decide the preliminary objection raised by the Centre, we will go into other aspect of the review petitions," the bench said, adding that "only if we overrule the preliminary objection, we will go into other details". Thailand's foreign minister said Tuesday that he will summon representatives from the embassies of the European Union and the United States to discuss why he believes they breached diplomatic etiquette by observing a Thai politician being charged with sedition by police. Centre gives nod to acquire 464 new T-90 tanks for Indian Army

In a major boost for the Indian Army, the Centre has cleared the acquisition of 464 T-90 main battle tanks to be deployed on the borders with Pakistan."In a recent meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, the acquisition of the 464 T-90 tanks was approved. The cost of the project is expected to be worth over Rs 13,000 crore," government sources said.The contract will also include a Make-in-India element for integration at the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi near Chennai.The new acquisition will increase the new T-90 regiments by 10 more units and would be equipped with thermal imaging night sights to allow the tank commander to strike enemy locations during night battles.The new inductions will also strengthen the Army's fire-power along the land border stretch with Pakistan -- from Jammu in the north till the western flank in Gujarat.India has already inducted 18 regiments of T-90 tanks which are deployed in Rajasthan and Punjab on the Pakistan front.However, the Indian Army's ..

The Punjab government on Tuesday decided to approach the Election Commission of India (ECI) seeking a review of its decision to transfer Inspector General of Police (IGP), Crime, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh.The ECI on Monday had directed the Punjab government to transfer Kunwar for "violating" the Model Code of Conduct.
