Cinema exhibitor PVR INOX Ltd plans to add around 100 screens next year entailing an investment of around Rs 200 crore, its Executive Director Sanjeev Kumar Bijli said on Friday. The company, which launched an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot, Movie Jockey (MJ), for movie discovery and booking experience, plans to add 100 screens every year going forward. "This year so far we opened about 70 odd screens and closed about 45-50 screens. We will be adding about 40 more screens this year and we will be closing down another 10-15 screens," Bijli told PTI here on the sidelines of the launch. The idea was to close down about 75 screens this year and add about 120, he said, adding "so we are on track". The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) on Wednesday defended "dynamic and flexible" cinema pricing, which fluctuates based on factors like location, day of the week, seat type, film format, and cinema format. Cinema exhibitors are now using sophisticated digital tools to stimulate audience demand and optimise pricing, said MAI while issuing a statement over the recent remarks by film maker Karan Johar. Brushing aside Johar's remarks, who alleged high pricing strategies by cinema exhibitors, the MAI statement quoting its President Kamal Gianchandani said the average ticket price (ATP) across all cinemas in India was Rs 130 per ticket. Cinema exhibitor PVR INOX Ltd on Friday reported a widening of consolidated net loss to Rs 179 crore in the June quarter impacted by postponement of film releases due to general elections. The company had posted a consolidated net loss of Rs 82 crore in the first quarter last fiscal, PVR INOX said in a regulatory filing. Consolidated revenue from operations were at Rs 1,190.7 crore in the first quarter, down from Rs 1,304.9 crore in the year-ago period, it added. Total expenses were higher at Rs 1,457.5 crore as compared to Rs 1,437.7 crore in the corresponding period in the last fiscal. The Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) on Saturday said that no Malayalam film will be given to any PVR owned screen or theatre till it compensates producers from the southern state for the loss suffered by them due to the multiplex company not showing films made by them across India. FEFKA general secretary Unnikrishnan B announced the decision at a press conference held here where noted producers like Blessy Ipe Thomas and Vineeth Sreenivasan were also present. Cinema exhibitor PVR INOX on Wednesday reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 12.8 crore in the third quarter of the current fiscal. The company, earlier known as PVR Ltd, posted a net profit of Rs 165 crore in the October-December period a year ago, according to a regulatory filing. Its revenue from operations stood at Rs 1,545.9 crore in the second quarter of the current fiscal. In the year-ago period, the same was at Rs 940 crore. The December quarter results came after the merger of rival Inox into PVR, hence it is not comparable, the company said.
