It's breakthrough summit in many ways: Russian Minister Lavrov on G20

Russia on Sunday said the G20 Summit under India's presidency was a "breakthrough" conclave in many ways as its outcomes showed a path to the world to move forward on a range of challenges and demonstrated the strength and importance of the Global South. In a press briefing, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said India played an important role in "preventing the West" from taking forward their approach on many issues, including Ukraine. The summit declaration clearly sent across a message that military conflicts in the world must be resolved according to the UN Charter and that the Western powers will not be able to press ahead with their concepts of resolution of various crises. "It is a breakthrough summit in many ways. It provides us a way forward to move ahead in many issues," he added. Lavrov also noted that the G20 Summit in New Delhi provided a direction towards fairness in global governance and global finance as well. "I want to express my gratitude to India for ...

North Korea's Kim Jong Un hosts Chinese and Russian guests at a parade

North Korea invited visiting Chinese delegates and Russian artists to a paramilitary parade featuring rocket launchers pulled by trucks and tractors, state media said Saturday, in leader Kim Jong Un's latest effort to display his ties with Moscow and Beijing in the face of deepening confrontations with Washington. The midnight parade in the capital, Pyongyang, which was to celebrate North Korea's 75th founding anniversary, came amid expectations that Kim will travel to Russia soon for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin that could focus on North Korean arm sales to refill reserves drained by the Kremlin's war on Ukraine. While China has sent a delegation led by Vice Premier Liu Guozhong to the North Korea's anniversary celebrations, Russia sent a military song and dance group. South Korean media speculated that the lack of Russian government officials at the festivities in Pyongyang could be related to preparations for a summit between Kim and Putin, which Washington expects ...

No clear indication to describe Ukraine crisis in G20 leaders' declaration

A day ahead of the G20 Summit, it was not very clear whether a consensus on the text to describe the Ukraine crisis in the joint leaders' declaration was achieved with China appearing to emerge as the main stumbling block to bridge the differences on the contentious issue. Multiple sources told PTI on Friday that no concrete consensus has been arrived yet on the contentious issue and that G20 Sherpas are holding hectic negotiations to find an amicable solution to the issue. Two sources said the G7 countries are not agreeable to any leaders' declaration without reference to the Ukraine conflict, adding there are other sticky issues as well. "But we are hopeful of overcoming them," said a source. The G20 operates under the principle of consensus and there have been apprehensions that the lack of a common view may result in the summit ending without a joint declaration. Both Russia and China had agreed to the two paragraphs on the Ukraine conflict in the Bali declaration last year, b

Not hopeful of Ukraine-Russia peace solution in near future: UN chief

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Friday said he is not very hopeful that there will be a peace solution in the immediate future for the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Addressing a press conference here ahead of the G20 summit, Guterres said the two countries still do not appear to be ending the conflict. Asked whether India could mediate to end the war, he said, "When you have a conflict, all efforts of mediation are welcome.... (But) I am not very hopeful that we will have a peace solution in the immediate future." On the need for reforms to multilateral institutions, Guterres said when these multilateral institutions were created, many of the countries of today did not even exist. "This is true for the UNSC and many others," he said. Asked whether it was time for India to become a member of the UNSC, Guterres said, "It is not for me to decide who would be in the UNSC, it is for the members (to decide)." "But it is obvious that India is today the country of the wor

Asean summit: Indonesia's leader calls for resolving global conflicts

Indonesia's president issued a stark warning Thursday after wrapping up a summit of Southeast Asian countries that was joined by China, the United States and Russia, saying we will be destroyed unless conflicts are resolved. The three-day summit by leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations along with Asian and Western counterparts in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta spotlighted major conflicts in Asia with calls for peaceful resolutions and restraint. Myanmar's bloody civil strife and the South China Sea territorial disputes, which have dragged on without any solution in sight, figured high on the agenda. Concerns were also raised over the U.S.-China rivalry in the region, although no ne was specifically called out as Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang and U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris were in attendance. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also took part. "I can guarantee you, if we are not able to manage differences, we will be destroyed, Indonesian President Jok
