Jaishankar holds bilateral meetings with counterparts from Japan, Australia

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday held meetings with his counterparts from Australia and Japan here during which they discussed bilateral issues and those pertaining to QUAD. An initiative of the Donald Trump administration in its first term, QUAD comprises Australia, India, Japan and the United States. The outgoing Joe Biden administration elevated it to the leadership level. A QUAD ministerial is expected to be the first order of business in terms of international meetings of Marco Rubio once he is confirmed by the US Congress and sworn in as the Secretary of State, which is reflective of the importance given to this grouping by the second term of the Trump administration. "Delighted to meet FM @SenatorWong, a Quad colleague, in Washington DC today. As always, enjoyed our discussion on the state of the world," Jaishankar posted on X after meeting Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong. "Good to meet with FM Takeshi Iwaya of Japan. India has to prepare for 'expressions' of China's growing capabilities: EAM

The India-China relationship is trying to disentangle itself from the complications arising from the post-2020 border situation and more thought needs to be given to the longer-term evolution of the ties, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday. Delving into various aspects of New Delhi's relations with Beijing over past decades, Jaishankar said "misreadings" by past policy-makers, whether driven by "idealism or absence of realpolitik", has helped neither cooperation nor competition with China. That has clearly changed in the last decade, he said at delivering the Nani Palkhivala memorial lecture in Mumbai. Mutual trust, mutual respect and mutual sensitivity should remain the basis of the relationship between the two sides, he said adding more thought needs to be given to the longer-term evolution of ties. At a time when most of its relationships are moving forward, India confronts a particular challenge in establishing an equilibrium with China. Much of that arises

India in unique position to talk to Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Iran: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has underlined India's potential role in ending global conflicts, saying that it is one of the few countries that is in a position to hold talks with both Russia and Ukraine, and with Israel and Iran. Jaishankar, who is on a two-day visit to Spain, made these remarks during an interaction with the Indian community here on Monday in an apparent reference to the wars in Ukraine and in West Asia, where Israel is fighting Iran-backed Hamas. The minister said India is today seen as contributing to a global conversation that when the "world is looking at many, many challenges, different issues, we also come up with ideas and initiatives". There are very few countries today who are in a position to talk to Russia and to Ukraine, he said. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi last year visited Russia twice and also went to Kyiv in Ukraine.
