We need to get over syndrome that 'West is the bad guy': S Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday said the West was not the "bad guy" as it was not flooding Asian and African markets with goods on a massive scale and that there was a need to get over the "syndrome" of seeing it in a negative way. Jaishankar, in an interview to Malayalam news channel Asianet, also made it clear that he was not batting for the West. He was in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the launch of the PM Vishwakarma scheme. "It is not the West which is flooding Asia and Africa with goods on a massive scale. I think we need to get over the syndrome of the past that the West is the bad guy and on the other side are the developing countries. The world is more complicated, the problems are much more complicated than that," the minister said. Former Indian diplomat T P Sreenivasan interviewed the minister for the channel. On being asked whether Chinese President Xi Jinping did not attend the G20 summit in New Delhi because it did not want India to be seen as leader

Bharat about country's traditions, culture, past and future: EAM Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday said that 'Bharat' was about the country's traditions, culture, past and its future. The Union Minister was speaking here at the launch of the PM Vishwakarma Yojana -- aimed at helping artisans and craftsmen and others engaged in traditional skills and occupations. At the event, Jaishankar said that in many nations traditional skills and talents vanished over time due to globalisation, industrialisation, people forgetting their traditions and the same being not passed on to the next generation. The same should not happen to India which is one of the oldest civilisations and whose identity is the traditions and culture of its people inherited over thousands of years. "Today we have gathered here to strengthen the identity, heritage and culture of India to make sure what we have received over thousands of years is passed on for thousands of more years. "So when we speak about Bharat, this is what Bharat is. Bharat is about our traditi

Bali was Bali and New Delhi is New Delhi: EAM on Ukraine in G20 declaration

The G20 leaders declaration avoided mentioning the Russian invasion of Ukraine and made a general call to all states to follow the principle of respecting each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty, in what is largely seen as a climbdown by the Western powers on the conflict. India managed to hammer out an unexpected consensus among the G20 countries on the contentious issue through a series of hectic negotiations with emerging economies such as Brazil, South Africa and Indonesia playing a leading role in reaching the breakthrough. Sources said these three countries also helped in drafting the text that drew every member nation's approval. The declaration issued at the G20's Bali summit last November had deplored in the strongest terms the Russian aggression against Ukraine while most members strongly condemned the war. "With regard to the comparison with the Bali Declaration, I would only say Bali was Bali and New Delhi is New Delhi. I mean, Bali was a year ago," External

India's G20 presidency prioritised addressing concerns of Global South: EAM

The G20 has contributed to making "India world-ready and the world India-ready", External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday as he underlined that India's presidency of the grouping prioritised addressing urgent concerns of the Global South. Addressing a press briefing on the G20 Summit outcomes, Jaishankar said the African Union became a member of the grouping under India's presidency which was in keeping with the priority that the country attaches to addressing urgent concerns of the Global South. "You would recall that at the beginning of our presidency, at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative, 125 nations were consulted to express voice of the Global South," he said. "In terms of organisation and programme, the Indian presidency, if I may say so, has been exceptional. Events have been spread across 60 cities which are truly across the length and breadth of India. There has been a popular participation and a societal involvement of an extraordinary degree," ...

Focus should be on position taken by nations: EAM on leaders skipping G20

With some leaders deciding to skip the G20 Summit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said the focus should be on the position taken by countries on key burning issues than on the levels of representations at the conclave. "At the end of the day, countries are represented by whoever they have chosen to represent them. The levels of representation do not become the final determinant of the position of a country," Jaishankar said. He made the remarks at a discussion on Doordarshan. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson announced in Beijing on Monday that China's President Xi Jinping will not attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi this week and the Chinese delegation will be led by Li Qiang. Russian President Vladimir Putin has already conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi his decision not to attend the summit in-person as he has to focus on the "special military operation" in Ukraine. Putin had skipped the Bali summit of G20 in November last year as well. In his comm
