State of border to determine state of relationship: EAM on ties with China

The state of border will determine the state of relationship between India and China, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday amid an over three-year military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh. "The state of the border today is still abnormal," Jaishankar said in an interactive session at an event here. On ties with the US, Jaishankar described Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Washington as "most productive" prime ministerial visit considering the solid outcome from the trip and that the relations between the two countries have become "exceptionally well". Referring to India's ties with China, he said the relationship is going through a "difficult phase" because of violation of agreements relating to management of the border. The Indian and Chinese troops are locked in the confrontation in certain friction points in eastern Ladakh even as the two sides completed disengagement from several areas following extensive diplomatic

Canada seems to be driven by vote-bank politics: EAM on Khalistan issue

Canada's response to the Khalistani issue appeared to be constrained by its "vote bank compulsions" and India will have to respond if the activities impinge on its national security and integrity, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Wednesday. In an interactive session at an event, he also said that the Khalistani issue has impacted the ties between the two countries in many ways in the last few years. India has been asking Canada against giving space to pro-Khalistani separatists and extremists elements. "For us how Canada has dealt with the Khalistani issue has been a long-standing concern. Because very frankly, they seem to be driven by vote-bank politics," Jaishankar said. "Their responses have all been, to the best of my understanding, actually constrained by what they regard as vote bank compulsions," he said. The external affairs minister said it made it clear to Canada that if the activities there impinge on India's national security, it will respond. "We made

We want 'robust' defence partnership with India: Filipino foreign secretary

The Philippines wants to develop a "very robust" defence partnership with India and is looking forward to procuring military hardware from it, Filipino Foreign Secretary Enrique A Manalo said on Wednesday amid concerns in Manila over China's increasing military muscle-flexing in the South China Sea. Delivering a lecture at a leading think tank here a day ahead of his talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Manalo said his country has "repeatedly" challenged Chinese presence in the exclusive economic zones (EEZs) of the Philippines in the South China sea and will continue to do so. The Filipino foreign secretary, on a four-day visit to India, said the 10 ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries and China have been engaged to formulate a code of conduct (CoC) for the South China Sea, but he appeared unsure about a positive outcome. The code is envisioned to prevent any military conflict in the South China Sea, a region that has overlapping territorial claims

New Delhi Hall at SCO Secretariat in Beijing depicts 'mini India': EAM

Ahead of next month's SCO summit to be held for the first time under India's Presidency, India on Tuesday inaugurated an exquisitely designed 'New Delhi Hall' here at the headquarters of the eight-member grouping, which External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said depicted a mini-India. The Secretariat of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) comprising China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan is located in the high-end diplomatic area in Beijing. While the six founding members China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan have their halls highlighting their cultures and unique features, India is the first to add its own 'New Delhi Hall' which is officially opened ahead of the July 4 SCO summit to be held in virtual format. Pakistan may have to await its turn to set up its hall. In his video address, Jaishankar said, I am delighted to inaugurate the New Delhi Hall at the SCO Secretariat today amidst the august presen

Everyone can make promises but Modi govt's 'strong point' is delivery: EAM

Everyone can make promises to people but the Modi government's "strong point" is that it delivers services and projects in a given timeframe, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Saturday. He was speaking during a function held at Badarpur here as part of the BJP's mega outreach campaign -- 'Sampark se Samarthan' -- to mark the completion of the nine years of the Narendra Modi government. "After elections, they forget (their promises made to people), but in Modi 'sarkar', people today are seeing the delivery (of services and projects)," the Union minister told reporters after attending the function at the site of an Eco Park being developed at NTPC's Thermal Power Plant area in Badarpur. The Eco Park project is currently underway, and South Delhi MP and BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri said the park is planned to be inaugurated in December. Jainshankar praised the NTPC for the project and the party MP and other local leadership for working on such a green project. "This Eco Par

India brings G20 spotlight back on real issues of global south: Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said India's G20 presidency succeeded in getting the focus of the grouping back on the issues faced by the global south without diminishing the seriousness of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and its consequences. Addressing a press conference after the G20 Development Ministers' Meeting here, Jaishankar said the 'G20 Action Plan on Accelerating Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)' and 'G20 High Level Principles on Lifestyles for Sustainable Development' were unanimously approved at the meeting. Right now our focus is how do you address the pressing needs of the developing countries, the small island developing states, the least developed countries, those who are really teetering on the edge of an abyss, Jaishankar told reporters here. The minister said last year, it was understandable that the focus of the G20 was more on immediate issues pertaining to the conflict, but a narrative took root over time that the conflict an

EAM flags supply chain disruptions, prolonged debt crisis as key challenges

The prospects of a global economic recovery remain dim amid supply chain disruptions, prolonged debt crisis and pressures on energy, food and fertiliser security, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday, calling for a united global approach to deal with the challenges. In an address at the G20 Development Ministers' conclave here, he also said that India has put forward an ambitious seven-year action plan for accelerating progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that presented an integrated and inclusive roadmap for G20 actions. The roadmap focuses on digital public infrastructure and fostering data for development, investing in women-led development and energy transition to protect the planet. "The world today faces unprecedented and multiple crises -- from the pandemics to the disruptions in supply chains, from the impact of conflict to climate events, our era is becoming more volatile and uncertain by the day," Jaishankar said.
