EPA cancels $7 billion Biden-era grant programme to boost solar energy

The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday terminated a USD 7 billion grant programme that was intended to help pay for residential solar projects for more than 9,00,000 lower-income US households. It's the latest Trump administration move hindering the nation's shift to cleaner energy. The funding, part of Democratic President Joe Biden's Solar for All programme, was awarded to 60 recipients including states, tribes and regions for investments such as rooftop solar and community solar gardens. Solar, a renewable energy, is widely regarded as a way to introduce cleaner power onto the electrical grid and lower energy bills for American consumers.

Need to establish weather stations at wind, solar plants of 50 MW: CEA

In an effort to enhance grid reliability and efficiency of green energy projects, the Central Electricity Authority has proposed that an automatic weather station needs to be installed at wind and solar plants of 50 MW or above by the developer. In February, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) issued an advisory on co-locating energy storage systems with solar power projects to enhance the cost efficiency and stability of the grid. The solar and wind generation depend on weather conditions. There are issues like not getting accurate weather forecasts. Many a time, forecasting errors result in significant financial penalties under the Deviation Settlement Mechanism (DSM), the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has said in a notification dated July 7. There is a need to install automatic weather stations in solar and wind power plants, the CEA said, adding that it has prepared guidelines for the same and directed all renewable energy implementing agencies (REIAs) to include the .

Solar Federation seeks extension of inter-state transmission fee waiver

The National Solar Energy Federation of India (NSEFI) has urged the government to protect the viability of numerous renewable energy projects facing risks from delays beyond the control of developers, according to a person familiar with the matter. In the letter to the advisor to the Prime Minister's Office, the federation urged that the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges waiver be extended to projects getting commissioned by June 2026 and meeting a specific criterion relating to connectivity application status, financial closure, land acquisition beyond the 50 per cent threshold, and if orders for equipment have been made. The federation, representing a broad spectrum of stakeholders across the solar value chain, stated that while the ISTS waiver, originally announced by the Ministry of Power (MoP), has played a "pivotal role in making renewable power more competitive", its delayed implementation by the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) in February 2023 ..
