Langer hopes Ponting can get Maxwell back to his best

Australia coach Justin Langer admitted the form of Glenn Maxwell was a worry ahead of a one-day series against England but said he hoped Ricky Ponting's arrival into his backroom staff would be a boost to the talented ball-striker. Former Australia captain Ponting will combine his work as a commentator on the upcoming five-match one-day international campaign with stints working alongside Langer. Maxwell was twice dismissed in single figures by spinners during Australia's warm-up matches against Sussex and Middlesex. Ponting was also Maxwell's coach at the Delhi Daredevils during this year's Indian Premier League Twenty20. But despite having one of Australia greatest batsmen in his corner, the 29-year-old Maxwell managed just 169 runs in 12 IPL innings at an average of 14. The Daredevils fared little better, finishing bottom of the points table following five wins in 14 games. But there is no denying the ability of Maxwell, who has an ODI strike-rate of 123. Asked, following ...

England gives Anderson 6-week break to be ready for India challenge

To be in his best shape to counter India in the upcoming Test series, paceman James Anderson will go into a six-week rehabilitation period to recover from a long-standing shoulder injury, England coach Trevor Bayliss has said. England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker, troubled by a right shoulder injury, will miss Lancashire's next two matches -- against Worcestershire and Hampshire -- in this period. The 35-year-old pacer though had played in drawn Test series against Pakistan, taking nine wickets in two matches at an average of 19.11. The five-Test series will begin on August 1 at Birmingham. Bayliss, in an ECB statement, said they want Anderson to be in best possible shape before the challenging India tour. "We have five Tests against India in a six-week period from August 1, which will be an intense and challenging period for all our bowlers, and therefore it's vital that we ensure Jimmy goes into that series in the best possible condition," said Bayliss in an ECB statement .

MacLeod hundred powers Scotland to record 371-5 in England ODI

Calum MacLeod's superb unbeaten century took Scotland to a record 371 for five in their one-day international against England in Edinburgh on Sunday. It was a brilliant performance by the Scots against an England team who are currently top of the one-day international rankings. MacLeod made 140 not out as Scotland surpassed their previous record total at this level of 341 for nine against fellow non-Test nation Canada at Christchurch four years ago. And it meant England would have to beat their highest winning total batting second in an ODI -- 350 for three against New Zealand at Trent Bridge in 2015 -- if they were to defeat Scotland in this stand-alone match. The Scots, sent into bat by England captain Eoin Morgan, lost two wickets in quick succession to be 107 for two off 15 overs. But MacLeod ensured a promising start to the innings was not wasted and together with George Munsey (55) he shared a fourth-wicket stand of 107. The 29-year-old MacLeod went to a hundred off just 70 ...

Rain curtails Afghanistan's first training session ahead of Test debut

Rain played spoilsport on Afghanistan's first practice session ahead of its historic Test debut against India as the minnows were forced to wind up its nets 45 minutes ahead of the scheduled time, here today. Afghanistan team arrived at NCA on time and started practising from 2 PM but had to wind up its session at 4.15 PM following a heavy downpour. Rain threat also looms large over the match starting on June 14 as weathermen had forecast wet conditions during one or two days. However, the Chinnaswamy Stadium is well-equipped to tackle the downpour with the help of SubAir subsurface aeration and vacuum-powered drainage system. The technology helps preventing water logging in the outfield and allows for quick resumption of the match as the system is capable of draining water 36 times faster than normal standards. Even as curators were working to keep practice pitches dry, Afghanistan players looked in good shape as they batted and bowled in the presence of their support staff led by ...
