Bengal blame it on injury; Kerala heap praise on youngsters

Bengal coach Ranjan Chowdhury today blamed their heartbreaking loss to Kerala in the Santosh Trophy final on injuries to key players. Trailing 1-2, Bengal were reduced to 10 players with eight minutes left in the extra time, but they managed to level through Tirthankar Sarkar's curling freekick in the 120+6th minute and take the match into penalty shootout. Kerala sealed the issue 4-2 in the penalty shootout as Bengal missed the duo of Bidyashagar Singh and Sourav Dasgupta sorely, Chowdhury said. "We had to make the substitutes all because of injuries... The duo was supposed to take penalties. It was a lost battle in the penalty shootout, much before it began," Chowdhury rued at the post-match news conference. Bidyasagar, who had scored the solitary goal in their win over Chandigarh, sustained an injury and was replaced by Sandip Bhattacharjee in the 90+2nd minute. Governor, CM congratulate Ker team for winning Santhosh Trophy

Kerala Governor Justice (ret) P Sathasivam and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan were among those who congratulated the state football team for winning the Santhosh Trophy defeating Bengal today. Sathasivam in a message said the victory after a gap of 14 years had re-established Kerala's supremacy in Indian football. Vijayan said victory was not only a proud moment but also inspiring. South Africa in control despite Australia fightback

South Africa moved into a powerful position despite a fightback by Australia and an injury to fast bowler Morne Morkel on the third day of the fourth Test at the Wanderers Stadium on Sunday. South Africa were 58 for one at tea, an overall lead of 325. PM hails Indian shooters at ISSF Junior World Cup

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today hailed the Indian shooters who won medals at the recently concluded ISSF Junior World Cup in Sydney. In a series of tweets, he congratulated the entire team for its efforts. "In the recently held #ISSFJWC, our young shooters have brought home several laurels and made every Indian very proud. Congratulations to the Indian team that took part and achieved remarkable success in the tournament in Sydney," he said. Kerala pip Bengal in penalty shootout, win Santosh Trophy after 13 seasons

Kerala held their nerves to beat Bengal via penalty shootout as they clinched their sixth national football championships for the Santosh Trophy at the Salt Lake Stadium here today. Locked 2-2 after extra time, Kerala goalkeeper Mithun V put up a stellar show in the tie-breaker to help his side win 4-2. Ankit Mukherjee and Nabi Hussain Khan missed the first two penalty kicks for Bengal as Midhun V thwarted both their attempts. Tim Paine fractures thumb during Johannesburg Test, bats on

Newly appointed Australian cricket captain Tim Paine has broken his right thumb during the ongoing Test match between Australia and South Africa, here at the New Wanderers Stadium.Paine suffered the injury while keeping wickets on Saturday.Paine suffered a hairline fracture when he was hit while keeping up to stumps to Chadd Sayers, having misread a delivery that reared off the deck and beat the outside edge of Quinton de Kock's bat, cricket.com.au confirmed.However, the skipper continued to keep in Johannesburg and later even came out to bat, when Australia had collapsed to 5-96.Paine, who was five not out overnight, continued batting on Day Three.Paine's right index finger was broken after being struck by a 148.2 km/h thunderbolt from Dirk Nannes in 2010.The recurring injury required seven rounds of surgery and almost ended Paine's career, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.At the time of filing this report, Paine is batting on 48*.
