Bumrah, Chahal restrict South Africa to 227/9

Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal grabbed four wickets, helping India restrict South Africa to a sub-par 227 for 9 in their opening encounter of the World Cup here Wednesday. South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis' decision to bat under overcast conditions backfired with Jasprit Bumrah (10-1-35-2) setting the tone with twin blows in his opening spell. Chahal (10-0-51-4) then tightened the noose on South African batsmen as they could never really force the pace during the middle overs. Incidentally, this was the best 10-over single spell (in terms of wickets taken) by any bowler in a World Cup game. South Africa's total got some semblance of respectability courtesy Chris Morris (42 off 34) and Kagiso Rabada (31 not out off 35), who shared a much needed 66-run stand for the eighth wicket. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (10-0-44-2) coming in place of Mohammed Shami was impressive in his second spell. Under a thick cloud cover and a pitch that offered bounce, Bumrah was unplayable in his initial five over ...

Australia's Finch backs concussion subs in international cricket

Australia captain Aaron Finch says he would welcome the introduction of concussion substitutes in international cricket. A report in Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper said the International Cricket Council could allow concussion subs from October 1 this year. At present, substitutes in international matches can only field and are not allowed to bat or bowl. But a two-year trial of concussion substitutes in various domestic cricket competitions around the world started in October 2017, allowing players to bat and bowl. The issue was thrown into sharp relief at the ongoing World Cup in England and Wales when South Africa batsman Hashim Amla was struck on the head by a bouncer from England fast bowler Jofra Archer and had to retire hurt even though he was wearing a protective helmet. He resumed his innings later on but was left out of the Proteas' second game, against Bangladesh, on medical grounds. Finch said on Wednesday that he had no qualms with allowing replacement batsmen or ...

Chhetri scores in milestone match but India lose 1-3 to Curacao in Stimac's first match under charge

Talismanic captain Sunil Chhetri struck in his milestone match but India lost 1-3 to higher-ranked Curacao in their opening tie of the King's Cup football tournament in Igor Stimac's first game under charge here Wednesday. Chhetri became the most capped India player by surpassing Bhaichung Bhutia's 107 international matches and he scored the lone goal for his side in the 31st minute from a spot kick for his 69th goal, though it did not make any difference to the result of the match. The 82nd ranked Caribbean island nation, which has two players plying trade in English Premier League and some others in European leagues, scored three in the space of 18 minutes -- through Roly Bonevacia (16th), Elson Hooi (18th) and Leandro Bacuna (33rd). A sloppy first half in which India -- ranked 101 -- defended and attacked poorly, saw the team trailing 1-3 at the breather. The new defensive set up -- with Rahul Bheke coming in as central defender -- was looking out of sorts with lack of anticipation

Will investigate Mumbai T20 League case once MCA provides details: BCCI anti-corruption chief

The BCCI anti-corruption head Ajit Singh Wednesday said he will investigate the case of a Mumbai player allegedly approached to under-perform during a local T20 League last month and is expecting the MCA to hand over the details of the matter at the earliest. "It (the case) has not been forwarded as of now but I will ask my office to check up with them (MCA). Once it comes, on the basis of what the complaint is, we will inquire since it is already out there (in public domain)," Ajit Singh told PTI. According to a media report, the Mumbai player, who has played Ranji Trophy, was approached by a rival team's owner to under-perform in the Mumbai T20 League semifinals. The league, approved by the BCCI and conducted by the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), was held from May 14 to May 26 and all the games were broadcast live on a leading sports network. The MCA too has an anti-corruption unit but it is not as well-equipped as the BCCI watchdog to investigate. A host of local T20 leagues ...

Infantino waved in for second term as FIFA president

Gianni Infantino was re-elected Wednesday by acclamation for a second term as FIFA president at the Congress of world football's governing body in Paris. The 49 year-old, who took charge of FIFA in February 2016 after the departure of the disgraced Sepp Blatter, stood unopposed for a new four-year term which will run until 2023. Earlier, Infantino had insisted that FIFA had been transformed into an organisation "synonymous with credibility" as he addressed representatives of the 211 member federations, before the Women's World Cup begins in the French capital on Friday. "Today nobody talks about crises, nobody talks about rebuilding FIFA from scratch, nobody talks about scandals, nobody talks about corruption, we talk about football," insisted the Swiss-Italian lawyer, formerly secretary general of UEFA. "The very least we can say is that we have turned the situation around. "In three years and four months, this organisation went from being toxic, almost criminal, to being what it ...

Sri Lanka's batting is a real concern, says Jayawardene

Former skipper Mahela Jayawardene is concerned about Sri Lanka's batting in this World Cup, saying the 1996 champions will need to put up a better show with the willow to give their bowlers more freedom. Sri Lanka crumbled to 136 against New Zealand in their first World Cup match. In the second game against Afghanistan on Tuesday, they were 144 for one in 21.1 overs before collapsing to 201 all out in 36.5 overs, losing nine wickets for 57 runs. Though Sri Lanka managed to pull off a 34-run win in the rain-hit match, Jayawardene said it was disappointing to see the wickets tumble like nine pins. "There is no question that Sri Lanka could have batted better. After such a good start, where Kusal Perera batted beautifully and they had two big partnerships, it was disappointing to see them lose their way in the middle," Jayawardene wrote in a column for the ICC. "In fairness to Mohammad Nabi, he bowled well, but the spinners were struggling to get much purchase and were just trying to ...
